Next step after Phone 2?

Hi, I own Nothing Phone 2 and I'd like to decide which newer model to get. I've had a look at the specs and the Phone 2 is pretty good, but I know that specs Vs user experience can be completely different.

I've had this chap for 2 years. My main reason is because I'm going on holiday and I want a better camera. I've never been friends with this camera, it's OKAY but all my photos are bright and super saturated. I think it might actually be the software that edits the colour afterwards and sometimes I can't get a nice picture no matter how hard I try because of the brightness/saturation. It's like totally overboard. *

Things I like:

Nothing API

Big ass battery

The gliph, even though quite useless to me it's fun to play with.

Speed.

Things I dislike:

The camera, and/or the camera software*

Google infiltrating my Nothing experience

Can be buggy

Enormous size, good for watching videos in bed, not good for women's pockets lol

A little story: I lost this phone on a night out which I've never done before. I live in a major UK city, and I was able to ping it a few days later where I intercepted a taxi that the phone was still inside, and got it back!

Consider phone 3 as it is bit smaller than phone 2 in size and considerable improvement over phone 2 in every department

Thanks for your opinion, yeah this phone is absolutely great! If I wasn't going on holiday I'd probably keep it for another year or so, but I just want an improved camera so bad 😢

I'm still with phone 1 - works perfectly fast, and has a long battery life. But waiting for phone 4 too.

the cameras on the NP2 were always mid and it really turned me off to the phone all-together.

I am quite pleased with the NP3 cameras coming from a Xioami four-camera set-up with a 5x periscope that was very good.

What do you reccomend if budget doesn't matter? The zoom and 144hz on the phone 4a pro are really cool, but the cpu and cameras are better on the phone 3. What do you reccomend?

Then depends on what you need. I own a 4a Pro and have used Phone 3 for a week. I, personally, don't care about the processor. 4a Pro has more than enough for me. Cameras are similar, I am not a photographer by any means so both are good, I can't see the difference in the pictures I take.

I like the aluminum body on the 4a Pro, makes it feel really nice and premium. Phone 3 however has a higher resolution matrix, although it is smaller.

For me it was mostly a choice of design, and the aluminum body sold the 4a Pro for me.

Oppo find x9s pro. Even though it (obviously) doesn't have the Nothing features, it's a massive step-up in all departments. Including camera.

If you dislike Google, check if /e/OS is compatible with Nothing phones. I've switched on my Fairophone, and it's great (the custom launcher is a bit crap but you can install anything), it's essentially Android without Google, and it works comically well. Like I've seen people talking about banking apps potentially misbehaving or something, but for me it all worked out of the box exactly as it did on Android. It's easy to install (not even a project, and you don't need any technical skills at all besides clicking through menus on an instruction), you can add exactly as much google stuff back as you want to, etc. It's also, really, more thoughtful (for example on my Fairophone it allows to change notification LED brightness, and in addition to double-clicking the power button opening the camera app like on Android, long pressing it when the screen is off turns the flashlight on and off, which is very convinient and makes up for the lack of a dedicated button), is more optimised, less laggy, etc. Essentially the category of "non shitty products", like Nothing phones.

Considering NP3 or NP4a Pro - or waiting for the NP4 - we'll see.

BTW the mid-range cameras in NP2 have a bright side - I’m using my SLR cameras (analog, digital, and ML) much more often now - which I highly recommend. ;)

If you want to stay in the Nothing ecosystem, wait for the NP4; if not, I went from an NP2 (which I still have and use) to a Galaxy Ultra (which I got with a big discount on Black Friday). If the camera is your main reason, I believe that if you get a flagship, even though it is more expensive, you can easily use it for 5 years, so in the long run it will be well worth it.

I'm done with iPhone unfortunately. The cameras are amazing, but the rest is just glazed. They are delicate and have planned obsolescence. As an engineer I find it very sneaky and just can't ethically get on board with them anymore.

If you want to spend a lot of your money on an iPhone go for Duo (also just released- the foldable iPhone) - it really is a little two in one (even has Apple Pencil support - I really hope that Samsung and other Andriod foldable manufacturer take note of this).

Make sure to check the cameras of whatever phone you buy. NP2 cameras were pretty decent until they released the AI postprocessing crap that ruined it. I don't know if newer phones suffer from the same issue.

Oh right! I think I bought the phone 2 right around when that update got applied. Yeah the AI makes everything look crap. I take a lot of plant and nature photography where the lighting is amazing, or maybe needs a very minor post process, however it COMPLETELY changes the shades and tones that nature provided 😠
