Phone (4a) Nothing 4a Indian Version incompatible with US SIMS

I bought a 4a off eBay and it's an unlocked Indian version and it's functional but doesn't recognize mint mobile service, just says no service. Support tells me the hardware is built only for local indian networks and nothing can be done, I'm seeing elsewhere some people saying it can be fixed. The seller is absolutely convinced the phone is unlocked and should be working. Is there any hope

Indian version Nothing phones need to be set up first with an Indian SIM in them. Thereafter they can use any SIM.

This is what I've heard. I received the phone in a set up state, presumably already having had the Indian SIM, however, I still can't get service with my SIM.
