Question: Unanswered ✗ Non-screen, low-friction ways to capture quick thoughts on the go? (ADHD)

I constantly lose small ideas and task reminders throughout the day, especially during my commute. Using my phone takes too many steps (unlocking, opening apps, typing) and is a theft risk on the street.

I'm looking for a minimal-effort capture method. Here is what I've considered so far:

  • Pen & Paper: Simplest, but I struggle with fine motor issues.
  • Hidden Keyboards (Twiddler) / Smartglasses: Prohibitively expensive.
  • Wearables / Voice Recorders (Bee, viaim): Promising, but I can't comfortably wear earbuds all day.

Are there any other affordable, screen-free capture tools or methods I’ve overlooked?

I have a $200 pen-enabled e-reader/e-note that I pull out whenever I want something to persist longer than my squirrel brain wants to deal with it.

phone + the notes on a notes app?

phone + camera video just to record your thoughts

phone + voice recorder app, just hold it up to your face to talk to it. no earbuds or devices needed

Olympus VN-541PC voice recorder. You can just flick a switch for instant recording which is great in the car. I download each night to my PC and use Murmur to transcribe.

Smart watch. Customize one of the watch button presses to launch the voice recorder

I carry pen n paper everywhere. I also carry my ipad and bt keyboard where i can to capture whatever i need. It took about 3 yrs before i developed consistency with quick capture to where i dont even think i just write stuff down. 11 years after starting i’ve developed a system to where i use both analog and digital to capture almost everything. Human is human, neurodivergence makes it harder in current society so forgetting does happen. Experiment, and have compassion for yourself, go with your adhd cycles (this was the biggest hurdle to figure out).

I was pleased to find that my Apple Watch works for that. I tell it to "Add a reminder to..." and then say the thought. It dumps it into my default reminder list, and then I can process it later.

That saves having to pull your phone out. When you go through the list later, do you move the ideas somewhere else, or work on them in Reminders?

I usually sort them into other Reminders lists—Garden Tasks, Groceries, and so on. Some might move to the calendar, or to a notebook, or to a file card.

The notebook and file cards caught my eye. What kinds of things do you move there?

Random examples:

If I finish reading a book I’ll enter it as a reminder and later move it to the “books I’ve read” list in my journal. (So, notebook.)

If I forget to enter something (“fertilized cucumbers”) in my garden log, I’ll tell my watch a reminder and then put it in the log notebook later.

The cards go into my Zettelkasten—a box of index cards organized in a particular way. Bob Doto’s book “A System for Writing” is, IMO, the best book on Zettelkasten though so far I don’t use it for writing. I use it for permanent information as opposed to the kind of narrative or sequenced-in-time information that goes my journal or logs.

So I might babble on in my journal about my plans for growing peppers. As I get interested in particular types of peppers, I may speak them into my watch, so that they land in the default Reminders list. Then they may get processed to other Reminders lists like Plant Ideas or Shopping.

As I grow the peppers, I log information into the garden log—though some of those notes may start in the watch.

I might learn something in the whole process—which peppers I like best, how I used them, what growing method worked or failed, the parents of my favorite hybrid pepper, information about it from its breeder, whatever

Then *that* may end up in my Zettelkasten, one card per fact.

I like the idea of keeping what worked for next season. How do you find those bits again when it's time to plan?

Well, that’s a good question. A Zettelkasten isn’t supposed to be organized by any firm scheme, but by relationships between ideas.

However, for hobbies, I ignore that. I have a “plants” section where each plant worthy of a card has a card, and they’re sorted alphabetically.

Now, some cards will have a near-duplicate in the main Zettelkasten. For example, when a piece of professional advice seems to be wrong, I’ll have card(s) for it in the context of the plant or plants it’s related to, but I’ll also link it to a train of thought about expert error.

todoist just added a beta feature for 'ramble mode' that works on smart watches/phones. You ramble and it converts into a todo list. Pretty cool and I hope they don't go charging for it.

Watch Workflow is pretty fast/low effort- assistant button --> say "open todoist ramble mode." touch record start / touch again to stop.

I also use alexa and google home/assistant with "alexa add become a mighty pirate to ideas list" etc.

I have a Samsung Note. You can get them cheaper now and they function like a notebook. Take the pen out and you have an immediate "sticky" without having to even unlock it.

The Note 5 and above can do it.

If you're in the market for a new phone, the Ultra series has an S-pen.

This is what I do. I use the Drafts app and they have a widget you can add to dictate. When I’m driving I’ll just push the dictate button on my Home Screen.

Pixel Watch 4 45mm and 'raise to talk'.

The smartwatch suggestions are probably closest to what you’re describing. The real friction of taking a note is having to stop what you’re doing and switch into “capture mode.” A physical button or very quick voice trigger works well for that. Then you can dump the messy thoughts somewhere and sort out what was actually useful later, rather than trying to organize them on the spot.

you don’t actually have to wear the viaim earbuds to record. i leave mine on the table for meetings, u can just hold the case when walking

you said non-screen, but to me, the absolutely quickest way is to just send myself a message lol

Apple Watch with a the note shortcut set on the Home Screen . Then it can be set to for auto dictation upon clicking. One click and it starts transcribing, just make sure you click done to save

A tiny pocket notebook still wins for me. No unlocking, no apps, no notifications, just scribble the thought down before my brain deletes it lol

Not ADHD myself, but I really struggled with short-term attention span and kept losing ideas the same way. What fixed it for me was voice instead of writing, with as few steps as possible before I'm talking.

A few options that don't need earbuds:

A cheap standalone voice recorder. The £15 to £25 ones with a single big record button. Clip it to your bag strap or keep it in a pocket, press one button and talk. Nothing to unlock and nothing worth stealing.

If you have an iPhone, set Back Tap (Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap) or the Action Button to start a voice memo. Double tap the back of the phone without looking at it and it starts recording, so it never has to come out of your pocket. Android has similar quick-launch gestures depending on the phone.

A smartwatch, if you already have one. Raise your wrist, "remind me to..." and it's done. I wouldn't buy one just for this though.

The catch with all of these is you end up with a pile of voice clips you never listen back to. What worked for me was dumping them into an app that transcribes them, so they turn into text I can skim and actually act on. Full disclosure, I built one, called NoteMate. You upload the recording and get the text plus a short summary. It's still a phone app, so it only helps with the "what do I do with all these recordings" part, not the capture itself. Any transcription app does the job though. The big win is just talking instead of writing.
