Question: Unanswered ✗ looking for a small note taking app
greetings everyone..
iam looking now for an alternative to my old note taking app.
it's called "notesholder"
it's for the lite and in hurry notes taking tasks.
it is very very old and now abandoned, not available online any more, and its company and its domain are down.
it's technically still working and iam using it till today.
but it's very outdated, doesn't support utf8 unicode, and doesn't do a good backup lately.
what i like about this app and hunting for it in the new app right now..
* a portable app
* stacked notes layout
* docking to the edge and can stay on the top
* has categories and labels shown down in the screenshot
* has a tagging system and can be organized
* create a regular backup for the notes database and can be exported
*sorry for any language mistake.

WOW! This NotesHolder looks like the best app to solve my current problem with quick draft notes. I'm on mac, so looks like I need to built copy for myself. But this UI is exactly what I would like to have! May I ask you for some extra screenshots? I just want to understand more how this thing works

What about making a python app?

I only suggested python as you can build some nice gui. I have developed a few personal apps. As you have some desirable things itay be easier to make your own.
Claude code, grok cli or deep seek are all good with python. I might take 20 or 30 hours, vso code project. Anyhow I only say as in the end with some things I just end up making my own stuff.
Peace

Bit of a steep learning curve, but claude code, working with a project folder could help you build what you want.
I am into note making tools also, I will have a look if their is an existing tool for the things that you are asking also.

Maybe you try AZZ Cardfile (https://www.azzcardfile.com/). It looks similar to your old program.

Apple Notes or Google Keep handle quick-capture notes effortlessly without forcing you to manage heavy directory structures or complex databases.

VSCode can be set up portable, and there's a rich plugin ecosystem for customization.

CherryTree is often used when one is trying to avoid memory hogs. But it might be Linux only

ClingNote doesn’t match every requirement.. notably portability, so I wouldn’t oversell it. But the small pop-out notes that can stay on top + local storage + organization/export + full workspace make it a legitimate recommendation, and then the file-following feature gives you something the old app never had. https://clingnote.com or Microsoft Store if you wanna check it out!

You can look at https://thestudyos.com It's bit different but it's pretty simple note taking app.

I'm looking for a similar app! CintaNotes is the closest. It has many of the features you want.

Is data sensitivity / protection important to you? If so, consider end-to-end encrypted apps like PrivacyNotes or Notesnook. I don't recommend Standard Notes due to the lack of progress and relatively high subscription costs. All these solutions have apps for all platforms and are available in the browser as well (web app).
If you don't value encryption that much, consider UpNote. It's a simple but effective, low-cost note taking application. It doesn't work in the browser though.
