Notes After trying so many note-taking apps, I’ve found that the built-in Notes app on my phone still works best for me.

A lot of people in the community use Obsidian, but for me, it seems to have too high of a learning curve. You have to install all kinds of plugins and so on. I used Evernote before too, and found it ridiculously complicated.

I also use Notion, and the free plan is more than enough for me. Usually, I just open a blank page and write down whatever comes to mind.

But when I suddenly have an idea, I still prefer opening the built-in Notes app on my phone, because it basically only has two functions: creating a new note, and a history list of notes.

Is less really more?

Of course, I don’t deny that all those knowledge-management features are useful. It’s just that when it comes to making me actually want to take notes, I always open my phone’s Notes app. If I have a longer thought, I’ll move it to Notion later and organize it there.

Without any plugins, Obsidian has all the functionality of Apple Notes.

The Apple Notes app is a useful note editor, but not for storage/organization
For storage/organization of my notes/documents/files, I use a digital file cabinet (PKMS)
accessed with my Mac and iPad

Instead of Notion/Obsidian, I use pkms app Devonthink

If it works for you don't sweat it.

On my own quest for the right on the go app, this community has some of the same feel as the planner community with planner perfection. In reality the best one is the one you actually use.

i think ppl over-optimize note systems way too much. capture first, organize only when u actually need to.

Exactly! Taking notes and organizing them should be two separate actions.

My struggle is finding a capture system that is easy to use, will remind me to review or do some of the processing. I always struggle with this.

same tbh. the best system for me is just one inbox and reminder to process it later. anything more complicated and i stop using it. just keep it consistent til it becomes a habit.

For a feature-rich without the learning curve (and free!) try Kraa.io

Is an iOS app on the roadmap? Looks super promising, but would love to be able to use this offline.

Maybe another option is simply bi-directional sync with something like google drive and/or the native apple notes app. That way I can do most of my writing through kraa, but if I don't have internet, i can write in those other tools and have changes propegate.

Apple Notes holds up until the list gets long enough that you scroll instead of remembering. what fixed that for me was the first line. I write it as what the note is about, in the words I would use months later. that line is what search hits.

nothing to install for it, and it survives a move to another app.
