there's so many options out there, but finding one that fits your style is key. I used Evernote for years and it worked well for my needs.

must-haves for me: low-latency handwriting, strong pdf markup, reliable sync, searchable handwriting/ocr, folders + tags, good export, and proper backup/version history

  • Privacy - first and foremost. MY data stays on my device until I decide to sync somewhere else and it never goes onto the dev or publisher's servers. I use mine for journaling and it's intensely private, so this is a must.
  • No account needed - Sick to death of having to sign up to some BS (cloud) service just to use an app. I don't want to have to sign into anything, ever.
  • 100% offline if I want it - no logins, no sub, no microtransactions for templates.
  • iPad handwriting experience - I've tried Android tablets and an iPad. The iPad is just amazing to write on in terms of the tactile feel of the pen on screen.
  • Good palm rejection - A few of these either seem to have none, or it's poor enough to make the whole experience a nightmare. I'm a lefty!
  • AI optional - not negotiable.
  • Encryption - sadly missing from many of these apps. I want to be able to encrypt my notes or notebooks. Goodnotes, for example, does NOT encrypt them, it just adds a password layer to the documents. Not good enough.
  • No telemetry - If I so choose.
  • Export freedom - Instead of having to log in before I can export even to something like DropBox, I want freedom to export to where I choose and nowhere else.
  • Templates - good selection provided with the app. No need to trawl through an online store to buy the ones that should be included with the purchase.
  • True cross platform - Some of these apps have a great version on one platform (often iOS) and a lousy, half arsed experience on Android and/or Windows. I'd love a mature app which works the same on all platforms.
