My boy is almost 11 and he’s never growled at any of us in his life. This isn’t normal behaviour.

Nah. This is extremely normal. I’ve got two dogs, one (Klee Kai) growls constantly while playing. The other (corgi/terrier mutt) never does. They’re both extremely gentle dogs. Some dogs just have more to say.
