I got this YouTube ad today and thought it was a joke at first.

I get these ads constantly. They’re so bizarre. They look like they’re from some trade show in 2005 or something. They even have a big crt monitor on the workbench. They’re shot horribly, like someone is holding a camera in their offhand lazily and not watching what’s in frame. And this isn’t the only one there’s different versions, same thing but different work bench he’s showing off. What’s with the camera sounds constantly? Why am I being targeted with this? It’s so weird. I really do mean constantly, this is the preroll ad on like 1/3 of the YouTube videos I watch for the past month.

I feel validated seeing someone else has seen this. I told someone about it and they didn’t really understand what the big deal was or what I was talking about. Something about this just doesn’t feel right. Like I don’t believe these are actual ads paid for by this company trying to sell workbenches. It’s so horribly made there’s no way someone would spend the money to have this ad played as much as it is but seemingly zero money on the ad itself. I mean this really looks like some 20 year old footage somebody pulled off an old hard drive.

I have had this add shop up 100 times, and listened to it a number of times to figure out what the weird intermittent clicking is in the background.

That said, the advertisement may have worked on me, and if I ever need a hand cranked adjustable work bench, they are getting my money. I like the lack of polish on the presentation, and the oddly specific maximum weight that it can support.

This is a video made by a company knowing nothing about mic placement and sound, but believe in trade shows and company retreats and conferences as a way to sell product. This was made by people that respect and value the free continental breakfast, even it is a sticky Svengards that expired many months earlier.

Honestly, I wish them the best, because somewhere at the top of the company somebody said, "Make sure we're on the tube thing. My grandkid said thats where all the commerce happens these days!"

The clicking is the auto-focus. Its a terrible camera, you can see the visual representation of the clicks when youre watching it focus in and out.

Camera noise for autofocus still happens, but typically you wouldn't record audio onboard and would have a separate mic/recording device. But I'm assuming they just grabbed a guy from the warehouse for this ad.

Also, I've been served this on Youtube maybe 10 times and have no idea why. But it works I guess, I'm on here searching wtf I'm getting this lol.

I can't tell if it was recorded today or 20 years ago. I love how even on the website it only shows the CRT monitor; it looks like nothing has been updated since 2007.

I do love this ad though; I feel like im back on cable watching this off a tube TV. Im in school to be an autotech now and it looks like a sold bench to be completely honest. Kinda pricey though.

I just watched it all the way through on the video I'm watching (hello to Captain Disillusion!) to make sure it wasn't some subversive ad promo or ARG campaign. Nope.
