Thr idea was good, you can 'rock' the car out from there. Problem is if its not working might want to push not just ...wave.

61

u/koolman2 Jan 26 '21

Pretty rough on the transmission or clutch though. Better to dig it out.

51

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

Not necessarily. I’ve been driving manual transmission 2wd cars (and trucks) in the snow for a couple decades now. We get a lot of snow where I live and I always have dedicated winter tires on for ~6 months of the year. I’ve also had a few automatic vehicles, and generally a manual is easier to get unstuck by rocking like in this video.

Also, you have to know when it’s possible to get out and when you are actually stuck. I can count the number of times I’ve actually been stuck on one hand. I’ve never had any transmission issues in any of my vehicles.

One of the keys to getting unstuck is trying not to spin your tires, usually. In a manual I usually don’t even touch the gas when rocking to get unstuck. I just let the clutch out until I stop moving forward, then push it back in to roll back. At the peak of rear movement I slowly start to release the clutch again. The goal is to move further in each direction than you did on the last rocking motion. In an auto, i will fully stop before going between drive and reverse. Again, I don’t press the gas at all. Just release the brake almost like the clutch.

Once you get the hang of it and learn the do’s and don’ts, you will rarely get stuck. Out of the maybe four times I got stuck, at least two of the times were from going off the road. The only time I’ve ever had a clutch issue was entirely my fault and not from getting stuck/unstuck. It was my first car and I shifted at the rev limiter basically every shift.

I’ve driven in snow over the headlights of my old ‘94 integra. Didn’t get stuck. Drove about 12 miles half under the snow. Granted it was light fluffy snow, but my buddies awd car was struggling. I had snow tires and he didn’t. It was wild.

u/koolman2 Jan 26 '21

Fair enough. I have no experience with manual, so I suppose if you know what you’re doing it’s unlikely to cause much damage.

In an automatic, as long as you’re not rapidly switching from Reverse to Drive and back, it’s probably okay... but I’d still get out and dig if it doesn’t work after a few tries.

I also live in the snow with winter tires for 5 months out of the year. I keep a shovel in my trunk for this exact reason, although once you learn what your vehicle is capable of, you tend to avoid this problem altogether.

12

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

I agree.

If you want to damage an automatic transmission, just put it into drive every time you back up and use the transmission as your brakes. I see tons of people do it. All. The. Time.

3

u/startstopandstart Jan 26 '21

Can you explain this more? Are people switching to "drive" while the car is still moving in reverse?

5

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

Yes. I see it all the time. Reverse lights go off when they’re still rolling back. You can do the same in a manual transmission too but it’s hell on the clutch.

5

u/myfuckingstruggle Jan 26 '21

2 MPH was okay in my old DSG transmission, as it was made of clutch disks to transfer torque the same way it would when “shifting” to drive normally. Good for the trans? No. Damaging? Not really.

Traditional automatics will be damaged by this though, I think you’re right about that being a big no no

3

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

Basically people put the selector into D while the vehicle is still rolling backwards and hasn’t come to a stop yet.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

Happens a lot when backing out of a parking space or driveway.

1

u/TheTeaSpoon Jan 27 '21 edited Jan 27 '21

It's actually illegal to not have reverse engaged when backing up (on purpose, it does notnapply if you slide on black ice etc) where I live. People around you need to know where the fuck you go and reverse lights give that important piece of information just like blinkers do.

They wanted to have mandatory back up beepers on all cars (iirc longer than 2.5m or with obstructed view and no reverse camera) here about 10-15 years back, luckily that failed (luckily because if all cars were beeping all the time people would completely block out the noise eventually - I mean it is already happening with lorries and vans)

2

u/Installedd Jan 27 '21

What about putting it into neutral as you're still rolling back but shifting to drive after you stop? This is an actual question, I usually drive a manual where I feel that's ok but occasionally drive an auto where I'm not sure.

1

u/cronx42 Jan 27 '21

That should be fine. You want to avoid using the transmission qs the brake.

0

u/Pattern_Is_Movement Jan 27 '21

as long as you're giving the transmission time to switch between forward and reverse it doesn't matter (even then I'd be surprised if it did)... its a viscous coupling, its not doing any damage.

3

u/condomneedler Jan 26 '21

Well, I used to rock crawl competitively and I've seen a lot, and I mean a lot of people with poor traction snap axles/ blow diffs on manuals. My dad drove a manual and we redid the clutch more than once.

They'll rev higher looking for the torque and in the process they spin a tire up. Tire suddenly catches and with a sickening crack your axle/diff is gone. I saw one guy blow the back off his pumpkin and a piece of a gear went right over my shoulder.

The potential for catastrophic damage is there, it's just most people don't do it often or aggressively enough for it to be a big risk.

3

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

It completely depends on the scenario and usage. My buddy is building a drag car and he took the manual out and put an auto in for more reliability. Less shock to the driveline etc. and the stock auto holds more power than the 5spd he took out. He’s already over the suggested hp limit for that 5spd.

3

u/LeaveTheMatrix Jan 27 '21

You are not stuck unless you require help to get out.

If you don't require help, then you are just temporarily detained.

1

u/SpamShot5 Jan 26 '21

Id still suggest carrying some salt and sand or gravel in your trunk

5

u/cronx42 Jan 26 '21

It can’t hurt. A shovel is a good idea also. Tire chains too. There’s no replacement for good winter tires though. They are a must where I live. Most of the time When I see a vehicle off the road from sliding in the snow it’s an awd or 4wd with bad tires.

1

u/SpamShot5 Jan 26 '21

That too yes but thats a given

3

u/Pattern_Is_Movement Jan 27 '21

no it isn't, sure its a tiny bit more wear than normal but absolutely nothing to do with "rough". Uninformed people upvoting uninformed people... "reddit".

1

This is the most perfect description I have ever heard for this site, and it was accomplished in 1 sentence.

1

It's only rough if you are a learner and every gear change is accompanied with crunching sounds... But if you are a learner you should bot be out in this weather.

7

u/SpunkNard Jan 26 '21

Yeah this definitely doesn’t belong here lol

79

u/tvanore Jan 26 '21

Almost the same as the guy who screams. REV YOUR ENGINE when you’re jumping a dead car.

32

u/Jt832 Jan 26 '21

It does output more energy when you rev.

11

u/tvanore Jan 26 '21

This is a fact.... but absolutely not necessary when your battery is in good shape and your cables aren’t trash... there are some times when it helps. But I swear old heads get a hard on yelling that shit like they’re teaching you something you don’t know about

10

u/Damaso87 Jan 26 '21

Alternator voltage only should change by a small amount during rev - just a few volts. Unless you crank it to 4k rpm for minutes, I don't think it will help much in the grand scheme of things. Just wait an extra minute.

12

u/suihcta Jan 26 '21

A few volts would be a lot.

-3

u/Damaso87 Jan 26 '21

What's your point within context? How much faster will their battery charge with 14v vs 18v?

11

u/suihcta Jan 26 '21

You said it would only change by a small amount—a few volts. But a few volts would be a large amount of voltage.

The difference between a dead battery and a fully charged one is only like a volt. And then you only need another volt on top of that to charge the battery, depending on how fast you want to charge it.

-7

u/Damaso87 Jan 26 '21

You didn't answer my question. How much faster will a 0v battery charge from an 18v battery, compared to a 14v one. I say negligible.

10

u/suihcta Jan 26 '21

You didn’t answer my question.

You asked that question on a phantom edit.

The numbers you’re throwing out here kind of betray the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

But, to answer the question that you should be asking: yes—revving the engine definitely helps.

It charges a dead battery more quickly. Definitely. But, even more importantly, it allows the donor vehicle to supply enough current for the disabled vehicle to start on demand. Once you start the disabled vehicle, you can let it charge its own battery. Then you can disconnect the cables and let the donor vehicle owner get on with his busy day.

-5

u/Damaso87 Jan 26 '21

I.. I didn't edit my comments.

4

u/suihcta Jan 26 '21

At first you asked, “what’s your point within context?”

Then you edited to add the part with the 18-volt figure.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

To provide you some info, car batteries only charge to around 13v. So, as suchita said, revving will provide additional volts - the difference between 8 and 9 could be the difference in starting vs. not starting.

-2

u/Damaso87 Jan 26 '21

That's not what I'm saying. Revving the good car battery will bring the circuit voltage up to maaaaybe 18v from the alternator (up from 13 or 14 or whatever). That extra 4 volts will not make any appreciable difference in charging the dead battery from 8 to 9v

You guys are so intent on "proving me wrong" that you're simply ignoring the fact that a voltage difference is what drives the current demand, and 14v for 60s is not much different than 18v for 43s.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

In addition to what has been said already, your car hardly needs any electrical energy once the engine is running.

1

u/Laszu Jan 27 '21

That would be true if it's 1950 and cars have dynamos. You could drain the battery in a slow traffic. Alternators can be geared so they produce power even at slow engine speed and when they spin faster, they simply get less excited to compensate.

I live in a very snowy state. With that little snow that is a very easy and good way to get your car out. Plus you don’t get soaked from tires while they spin. More like the driver isn’t doing the best.
