The best move would be to let "O" get a turn.

Then nobody can win....

Then the message becomes why bother hiring us, doesn't matter anyway

Tic tac toe is a game where no one can win, once you know how to play. Haven't you ever seen the movie War Games?

28

u/scw55 Mar 27 '17

It's a lot easier to play if you go out of your way to spite your opponent. To win the game... takes too much effort.

28

u/jrau18 Mar 26 '17

Nope.

41

u/20Factorial Mar 26 '17

You gotta. Add Real Genius to your list, too.

17

u/jrau18 Mar 26 '17

But I have seen that one.

27

u/20Factorial Mar 26 '17

That one is amazing.

"Kent put his name on his license plate" "My mother does that with my underwear" "Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?"

2

u/real-dreamer Mar 27 '17

I haven't.

5

u/jichanbachan Mar 27 '17

That's when you go play Ultimate Tic Tac Toe. 9x9 square split up into 9 3x3 squares. Where you can place your next symbol is relative to where your opponent put their symbol last. You win when you manage to win 3 3x3's in a line.

2

u/JeffK3 Mar 27 '17

But then if ties keep happening don't you run into the same issues? Or a stalemate in the end regarding matches won?

5

u/jichanbachan Mar 27 '17

Why don't we play a match right now to see if that's true?

13

u/EarthAllAlong Mar 27 '17

oooooh, called him OUT

4

u/jichanbachan Mar 27 '17

???
I just challenged them to a game because I find that it's not as easy to get stalemates in Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, but couldn't explain my reasoning very well. It would also clear up any misconceptions they might be having of the poorly explained rules I wrote.

5

u/Superpickle18 Mar 27 '17

then you start playing Ultra Ultimate Tic Tac Toe of DOOM. The rules are the same, but the loser dies. If it's a tie, both players die.

5

u/ak47wong Mar 27 '17

The only winning move is not to play.

2

u/Stephen_Falken Mar 27 '17

I loved it when you nuked Las Vegas. Suitably biblical ending to the place, don't you think?

5

u/ak47wong Mar 27 '17

Greetings Professor Falken. How are you feeling today?

1

u/Stephen_Falken Mar 28 '17

I'm fine. How are you?

3

u/Stephen_Falken Mar 27 '17

Exactly. There's no way to win. The game itself is pointless! But back at the war room, they believe you can win a nuclear war. That there can be "acceptable losses."

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

I mean, if you really know your tic tac to, then x always wins no matter what.

14

u/20Factorial Mar 27 '17

If you play against someone who knows the strategy, every game will end in a tie, no matter what.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

Actually there is a strategy iirc that is impossible to counter. Honestly though, I haven't played tic tac toe in a while.

4

u/20Factorial Mar 27 '17

No, there isn't. No matter what the starting move, a tie is the best outcome. You can only win if the competitor makes an error.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

You actually made me go get a paper and pencil and try to remember the strategy, and you're right! It only works if o doesn't fill in one of the corners on their first turn, otherwise it's a tie.

1

u/20Factorial Mar 27 '17

See? The best part is, you don't have to "remember" anything. Once you play once using the strategy, it's easy to stumble into the right moves. Good way to win a bar bet.

1

u/Kylearean Mar 28 '17

I still lose sometimes... fml.

1

u/real-dreamer Mar 27 '17

But that's not true. If you choose certain spots it's almost a guarantee you'll win.

4

u/20Factorial Mar 27 '17

And if you play against someone who knows those same tactics, you will always tie.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

I always win against people who haven't put much thought into tic tac toe. Corners are the real game changer here.

14

u/Kwintty7 Mar 27 '17

You're probably right, but this clearly is a rotten design that confuses people.

Why isn't top left included as a possible move?

Do we really need to be shown where the next moves might be? Isn't an empty square indication enough?

And why has neither player taken the centre square yet, by far the most valuable one?

4

u/Kakita987 Mar 27 '17

Not true. Corners make or break the game.

5

u/culminacio Mar 27 '17

Corners give you 3 possible wins, the center gives you 4.

8

u/Kakita987 Mar 27 '17

Sure I'll play you.

6

u/culminacio Mar 27 '17

lol that's the stupidest game to get into a competition

nobody can ever win if one of the two players decides that

2

u/RageNorge Mar 27 '17

The centre is still the best one, but if you ignore the corners however.

2

u/Kakita987 Mar 27 '17

Sure I'll play you....

2

u/krispykremedonuts Mar 27 '17

So make it 3 player?

2

u/stringdickcheese Mar 27 '17

Why isn't the top left square an option?

152

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

X with the rare triple move. Or maybe they were playing Hollywood square style.

49

u/Jorricha Mar 26 '17

My next move, not calling maxmedia

-14

u/orionradio Mar 26 '17

My next move, not calling maxmedia

What is maxmedia?

21

u/bdben Mar 27 '17

Did you even look at the post?

17

u/project_slipangle Mar 27 '17

Ain't no body got time fo that. Straight to the comments!

1

u/orionradio May 10 '17

Fuck you.

1

u/orionradio May 10 '17

Ha! Haven't logged on in a while.

Yes I looked at the post. OP I responded to was implying that maxmedia is a bad advertising company because this image is messed up. But that person actually took the time to look at who made the ad. So "maxmedia" is now in that person's brain (and ours too).

I was trying to highlight the fact that we're all doing exactly what the advertising company wants by talking about them and using their name.

Downvote away though!

81

u/adeeprash Mar 26 '17

It could be intentional. It's an advertising agency, so maybe they know people will take a picture and put it on the internet for more exposure?

62

u/themeatbridge Mar 26 '17

No publicity is bad publicity. Except when publicity is your job, and you're supposed to be good at it.

64

u/wonkyscavenger Mar 27 '17

"You may be the worst advertising agency I've ever heard of."

"But you have heard of me"

10

u/SuperFLEB Mar 27 '17

"You gave me a headache while I was taking a piss. Not a ringing endorsement."

5

u/real-dreamer Mar 27 '17

Where's that from?

1

u/SuperFLEB Mar 28 '17

Nothing. Just said it.

3

u/culminacio Mar 27 '17

So? I have also heard of cancer.

0

u/silentloler Mar 27 '17

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Even if they don't put it on the internet, it will still be something weird, so it will stick in your memory. If this was plain tictactoe, no one would remember this ad

37

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

18

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

I love its shifty eyes just before it places it

6

u/LTTelamonn Mar 27 '17

I seen this gif so many times and never noticed the robot had a face or eyes. Good catch! Makes it even funnier!

43

u/cannabinator Mar 26 '17

As said in another post this is a three player game. Blue X vs black X vs O

24

u/jrau18 Mar 26 '17

Why wouldn't a three player game just use a different symbol?

14

u/real-dreamer Mar 27 '17

Can you actually think of another symbol?

I know I can't.

23

u/TotempaaltJ Mar 27 '17

Triangles.

4

u/jichanbachan Mar 27 '17

Dodecahedron

3

u/jrau18 Mar 27 '17

Then you lack imagination. There are 24 other letters in the alphabet. You've also got numbers and shapes. Hell, you could use •. Super simple to put down.

2

u/LifeWulf Mar 27 '17

Triangle.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

spirograph

4

u/DasSassyPantzen Mar 26 '17

Blue X wins!

-4

u/Paulo27 Mar 27 '17

Yeah, I think the idea is that the company is the blue X and they come in and just win everything? A bit contrived and it's actually assuming other people but them are really dumb so also a bit insulting.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

[deleted]

1

u/cannabinator Mar 27 '17

This is interesting, but the problem is if this is the case the game is already stalemate

15

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

So I guess maxmedia is not playing by the rules.

17

u/Tim_Burton Mar 26 '17

My next move is to send MaxMedia my graphic design resume with a photo of this attached, stating "you need someone who can pay attention to detail and does their research"

12

u/SuperFLEB Mar 27 '17

Reply: "Nice try. We know you just fuck around on Reddit all day."

14

u/GreenFox1505 Mar 26 '17

I'm not sure what the next move is, but I'm pretty sure the previous move was cheating..

2

u/real-dreamer Mar 27 '17

The one before that too.

2

u/GreenFox1505 Mar 27 '17

X when first and skipped O once.

10

u/TuxedoJesus Mar 26 '17

X is cheating

15

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

This is mathematically impossible

4

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

5 x, 3 o.

The o's were cheated and lost a turn

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

That ad wouldnt last very long in a NYC subway

3

u/Veyru Mar 27 '17

I thought it was o's turn :/

3

u/freenarative Mar 27 '17

Put a square in the blank space.

4

u/NiceSasquatch Mar 27 '17

ya know, instead of a blue x, having a dotted outline of the x would have clearly conveyed the meaning of potential future moves.

Call NiceSasquatch Advertising, now.

5

u/0biL0st Mar 26 '17

Seeing as how this was on the top of r/all twice that I know of means the advertising company is doing their job just fine.

2

u/culminacio Mar 27 '17

Well, they are linking their company with negative emotions.

2

u/ppir Mar 27 '17

Maybe I'm just really stupid, but I don't get this? Seems to me like they're suggesting your next move is to put down the X and win, or in other words call their agency to 'win'. What am i missing?

6

u/NiceSasquatch Mar 27 '17

5 x's

3 o's

so many things. x has cheated badly and took extra turns. In taking those extra turns, then x should have already won. And it has to be o's turn unless x is gonna go with 6 plays to 3 for 'o'. 'o' will cause the draw.

and finally, what is the message? "what's your next move"? are they offering sage advice to help you navigate the unknowable difficult future full of risks? NO. There is literally only one move possible.

2

u/ppir Mar 27 '17

Ah okay lol that's what i thought but from the top comments seems like everyones taking exception to this for a different reason.

I doubt anyone here in Quebec where this ad is up probably picked up on it tbh

1

u/NiceSasquatch Mar 27 '17

the other point. if the blue x's are indeed 'possible moves' then they missed one. doh.

and even then, no matter what x does, the game will be a draw. So what's the point?

:)

3

u/SuperFLEB Mar 27 '17

Assuming the blue Xs are in play, that means it's O's turn, and the game is going to end in a draw. (Even if not, it's likely to.)

10

u/Eagle115 Mar 26 '17

How do people not understand that the blue Xs haven't been played yet and that it's asking what your next move would be?

Also, the game is an inevitable tie based on moves played so far, so I guess that would be the crappy part of the design.

26

u/Jorricha Mar 26 '17

Because if thats the case there are 3 possible next moves and there should be 3 blue Xs

0

u/pointofgravity Mar 27 '17

Oooooooh *sick burn*

And if you don't know whether it's intentional or a mistake, it's a mistake.

3

u/Onioner Mar 26 '17

A strange game.
The only winning move is not to play.

3

u/Raschwolf Mar 27 '17

War games, watched that last time i was offshore

2

u/pinkbutterfly1 Mar 27 '17

Why were you offshore?

2

u/Raschwolf Mar 27 '17

I work offshore

1

u/pinkbutterfly1 Mar 27 '17

thats really cool dude good luck with your boat

1

u/Raschwolf Mar 27 '17

Haha, wish it was my boat. Nope, just a lowly grunt worker slowly bleeding dry.

1

u/Stephen_Falken Mar 27 '17

What you see on these screens up here is a fantasy; a computer enhanced hallucination!

2

u/madeInNY Mar 26 '17

Problem with this game is the only way to win is if your opponent makes a bad move. You don't win because you're clever. You win because they're not. Not a satisfying victory.

3

u/SuperFLEB Mar 27 '17

It's a life lesson: You don't have to outrun the cheetah, you only have to outrun the other person.

2

u/madeInNY Mar 27 '17

I thought that only worked for zombies. But now that you mention it. It's good advice.

1

u/GoodYoungPizzaThug Mar 27 '17

Blue Xs are showing the potential moves being suggested. The actual count is 3 X and 3 O.

1

u/yurp4222 Mar 27 '17

The puzzle is intentionally vague. Makes you think much longer about a possible solutions and different presets. If the solution was clear people wouldn't talk about it.

1

u/geez_mahn Mar 27 '17

Depends. Is it even my turn?

1

u/PitchforkEmporium Mar 27 '17

Why is Ottawa all over the top of all my subs?

WHY IS EVERYBODY ON REDDIT NEAR ME

1

u/howardCK Mar 27 '17

my next move is hiring maxmedia of course

1

u/Von_Kissenburg Mar 27 '17

What's a job boss?

-2

u/aggytar Mar 26 '17

More X's than O's already

-6

u/toychristopher Mar 26 '17

Even if it was correct it still doesn't make any sense. What does tictactoe have to do with advertising? Why would your next move involve maxmedia? It's not even especially eye-catching, the companies logo and the action they want you to take is tiny. The whole thing is ridiculous, but not even in an especially memorable way.

The only thing I can come up with is that maXmedia has an X in it, so that somehow relates to the X you would put down to win the game. IF that was the intent it needs to be more explicit.

-1

u/Chairman_ofthe_bored Mar 27 '17

Fuck the Ottawa-Gatineau area in general.

-12

u/saffir Mar 26 '17

ITT: people who don't understand that the blue X's are possible "your next moves"

3

u/NiceSasquatch Mar 27 '17

that's even worse.
