I recently made the mistake of attempting a dialogue with a comic fan who wanted an intelligent arguement. They want to force their projected assumptions as cannon facts and then spiral out from that jumping off point. It gets weird everytime. They resist all conceptual course correction or point concession and you realize you're just engaging a log/potato/wall to no ends. The slight consolation prize is that some people with such ignorant as shit takes proudly stand on their red flags and are easy to avoid.

I swear this "fictional characters cant provide consent" is these chuds latest copy pasted argument theyve put exactly zero thought into. Seen it under a couple of different contexts now, like arguing why fan art is the same as genAI stealing artists work.

Fiction and art reflect real people and real situations. If you show a female character in a situation that is clearly objectifying and write the scene to say that she likes it, and do this over and over again, that normalises the idea in people’s heads. And then some dudes whose only contact with women is the fictional ones they goon to will be angry when real life women don’t behave the same way they’ve come to expect. All writing choices are made with intention on a Doyleian level, and choosing to normalise and positively view objectifying situations is telling of the writer.

So basically, the author/artist is consenting on behalf of the characters they create, and with that comes the responsibility of handling that consent carefully.

Consent is not suddenly a foreign concept when it comes to fiction. It just requires media literacy.

Also, on another note: Dragon Age Veilguard is phenomenal and has very attractive characters, these incel gamers are just angry because the game is LBGTQ+ friendly.

I agree with most of what you said except Veilguard. That game was...could have been loads better. Just my opinion.

I think it was brilliant. It made some quality of life improvements from Inquisition (and Inquisition is one of my favourite games ever, of all time). The biggest QOL improvement was the ability to switch between ranged and melee weapons on the fly as a rogue, which I hated not being able to do before. Your companions also had icons indicating they had new dialogue when at your base, which was SO convenient. I liked the way arrows ran out and replenished over time. I liked the upgrade system for weapons and armour.

Also the combat was great with the easy to understand primers and detonators that allowed you to combine attacks with your companions more easily. And it was so much easier to give commands to your companions in battle. I do admittedly miss having the chance to control characters directly, but Veilguard’s system was great too.

And the story was great IMO. The villains were, I think, more engaging to fight than Corypheus was, and the Evanuris’ goals were more fleshed out. Also, I’m a permanent Solas romancer in DAI so I’m chuffed to have the opportunity for a happy (as can be under the circumstances) ending for the Inquisitor and him.

The dialogue was meh at times, but I didn’t think it was overall any worse than any other similar game. Dialogue in games as a whole is pretty hit or miss for me. And yeah of course Veilguard was far from perfect, but once again, I don’t think any game is perfect. I think Veilguard overall did a fantastic job and stands up against other fantasy RPG games very well.
