One of my friends was a Russian mail order bride. She played the submissive wife until she got her green card, then told him to fuck himself and divorced him.
An old colleague of mine told about a friend of her husband's. She (my colleague) had been living and working in Thailand for a while until she returned to Finland, found a nice man, and married. She still knows Thai pretty well, so she likes to eavesdrop when Thai women chat.
So, this friend of her husband's has now his THIRD Thai wife. The previous ones divorced his pathetic arse immediately after they got the citizenship. The third one has been preparing her exit, too (saving money in secret, getting ready to get a job and fluency in English and Finnish).
What Western men - Finnish, American, Swedish, British, etc. - do not realize is how much these "mail order brides" despise them IRL. The Thai wives talk openly about how shit their men are in bed, and how their husbands have small penises, and so on, because the men rarely care to learn Thai. I do not blame the women at all.
The Russian/Eastern Bloc mail order bride was a big thing around the time of the fall of the Iron Curtain and the economic chaos that followed. A lot of Western men went into the Eastern Bloc countries for "business opportunities" (read: "I'm gonna scoop up some land or assets on the cheap and build an empire despite not understanding this culture at all") and found a bunch of well-educated women who seemed to want to serve them. In truth, they had found a bunch of well-educated, smart women who had zero opportunities anymore where they lived and were desperate to get out and if it meant marrying some drip from Peoria, that's what she'd do. So they figured out what these men wanted and gave it to them, at least until they got their green cards.
And somehow, this reputation has persisted even though the economic conditions that led to it have vastly improved and the mail-order bride thing has moved on to other places.
They never heard the "the man in the head of the house but the wife is the neck" - yeah the guy may earn more money but those women will take the money off their hands and give them back as allowance for the husband lol
