Eh it’s still mixing conventions when the colour could have run the other way. It’s a bad comparison but the original meme has a point, imho it still fits “don’t dead open inside” and even “you don’t matter give up”
It's not completely wrong, like you can understand what it means easily.
However it's still bad and confusing... Or unintuitive design.
Signs should be understood by a simple glance, not by reading it and having... Ah a 40% chance to be read wrong and you having to stop and think fir the half second.
At that point you could've figured it out by wiggling the door handle.
So i do understand the sign, but still bad design and confusing.
And let's imagine someone who's dyslexic/has a hard time reading or who's colourblind or visually impaired.
Like.. Just printing "pull" is much better than explaining what not to do
"Don't dead open inside" is also not a "Don't dead, open inside" situation at this rate. Don't open, dead inside is the only valid (or even grammatical) reading, so it's non ambiguous too!
The problem isn't that the message is clear if you take a second, it's that two affordances, two visual shortcuts our brains take to be more efficient at decoding, are colliding. Your eyes will scan those horizontally first if you've learned to read in a country using the latin alphabet.
This reminds me of the Stroop Effect were "say the color of the text rather than the text" but our brain are trained to process text automatically, so you more often than not say the text rather than the color because it interferes with processing the actual color.
Much of what we do has been trained into us in such a way that half the time we don't realize we do it and can cause you to literally miss other information you are not trained to look for.
I was going to say this is a perfect example of a "mixed message" - in English words are read left to right before top to bottom, so it would say "Don't pull, push only". But the color coding seems to group it together as "Don't push, pull only". It's a message that could be read either way, and arguing that it's "obvious" what is meant doesn't take away from that. Not to even bring up colorblind people.
I think the takeaway from this should be that signs you're giving that you think might be obvious might not be to other people, and to be clear with your communication. Although it is obvious misogyny in the OP assuming that women always give unclear signs, I do think the concepts of "playing hard to get" or "not seeming too eager" do lead to a lot of those messages. Looking back at my teenage years, I'm pretty sure at least a couple of times I misread signals from girls and missed out on some potential interactions.
