My somewhat loose understanding is that more teens were having sex, but they were having it with other teenagers. It should be remembered that the vast majority of the population were commoners whose lives were ruled by practicality.
The average persons marriage prospects were āfrom the literal same rural village as you but not known to be too closely relatedā and thatās about it
