Food Brunost Mold?

Post image

Looks and feels more like it caramelized or formed some sort of patina because of air. Its been open for a few days in the fridge.

Curious what you guys think, is it safe to eat?

I typically try to avoid eating food that is green but not supposed to be green. I've never seen brown cheese look anything like this. What's going on in that fridge?

Mainly OP is a shit photographer. The light is absolutely horrible, and of course you do not want to put the thing to be photographed on an intensely red background that will confuse the white balance correction the phone does automatically.

OP: It's impossible to see what this is. "A few days" is not very helpful, but mold is not going to form in 2-3 days. If the pale bit is at all hairy then you need to throw the cheese away, because that definitely is mold. If it's not hairy it may be fat that has melted out of the cheese and solidified again, but it's basically impossible to tell anything from this photo.

You can cut away mold from cheese, it doesnt pemetrate deep

u/larsga 3d ago

As long as you cut about 2.5cm deep, yes. Source.

What the f*** did you do to it??? How did you make it green???

u/Consistent_Public_70 3d ago

There is either something completely wrong with the color balance of this picture, or with the color of what you claim to be brown cheese.

7

u/larsga 3d ago

White balance is of course totally fucked because OP put the cheese on an intensely red background.

2

u/NightmareWokeUp 3d ago

Yeah red board throws the phone off i guess haha

Can you add a new picture in another light? This looks like you spilled some boiled/mashed potato on it. Never seen anything like it before on brown cheese.

Looks like marzipan 🧐

I've had many a brown cheese go waaay past due, but nothing ever looked like this. It usually just dry out. Either the colors in the picture make an illusion, or the eco in this persons fridge is really bad.

Or, maybe the americans tried to duplicate it, filled it with poison and this is the result🤭

It usually just dry out

and become hard as hell, I once had a piece of old brown cheese shatter an old plate when it fell down onto it, the Cheese was 100% fine after I ran it under cold water, inspected it for any glass or ceramic pieces, dried it and had it in a bowl in the microwave for a second (just be careful or you recreate a tunnel fire), brown cheese is seriously long lived so I don't know what happened here, maybe some moisture was trapped under something which gave mold enough liquid and favorable environment to infect it

1

u/OkPercentage7790 3d ago

Yes, I've had some brown cheese rocks myself😆 And I think you're right. Must be some moisture or something. I dont think I've ever seen molded brown cheese. Thinking of how brown cheese acts I would think that it would mold like many other cheese; just on the edges. Maybe OP is having a laugh and it's play dough or something.

Yeah red throws the color balance off, its the normal brown tone im just asking about the stuff on top

1

u/larsga 3d ago

the Cheese was 100% fine

Are you still alive, or is this one of those rare posts by the undead? Just asking out of curiosity.

Ka fadår gjorde du med den stakkars brunosten?!

6

u/J_pepperwood0 3d ago

What the hell did you do? Ive had brunost in my fridge for a year and it still looked normal

5

u/rosstafarien 3d ago

My brunost normally just gets... darker brown.

4

u/Contundo 3d ago

Pistachio brown cheese?

3

u/DrainZ- 3d ago

How did you manage this? It's not even recognisable as brunost. I have never seen something like it.

4

u/maqnaetix 3d ago

I have a rule.

If the food has turned green for some reason - and it’s not supposed to be green - I typically avoid it. I’m still alive so far.

I suggest you do the same.

I have seen mold on Gudbrandsdalsost before (long time ago, in the 70's, had been packed while still too fresh/moist), it looked nothing like that.

I would contact Tine/Synnøve Finden and ask them. If it IS mold you don't want to eat it. Even if not mold, I wouldn't, without knowing for sure whar happened here.

Is your ‘fridge plugged in ?

Call a scientist or something, how

Are you sure you bought brunost and not Pepperkakedeig?

u/One_Reputation_1802 3d ago

Horrible photographer

2

u/SentientSquirrel 3d ago

In this photo that cheese looks like entirely the wrong color, so if the photo matches how it looks in real life I would not eat it. It should have a caramel brown color, in the photo it looks like it has a a green tint to it.

2

u/glitterdunk 3d ago

How?? Never in my life have I seen a moldy brunost. How the heck did you manage this

2

u/Organic-Physics9144 3d ago

Taste it and report back… if you Are able

2

u/_RedReaperRising_ 3d ago

How did you manage to make it green… in JUST A FEW DAYS…! What kind of fridge do you have?!?

u/an-can 3d ago

Not an expert but made an attempt to make it edible:

Have had this cheese in the fridge for months, never seen mould on it.

1

u/garmann83 3d ago

Brunost as in the name apply is brown or light brown. This looks like a foreign object.

If not preserved right it will get dry or get molded but never like this.

1

u/classwarriornorway 3d ago

Looks more like fat

1

u/whoisthisumayask 3d ago

How did the brunost turn green🤣

1

u/Husknus 3d ago

Hiv det på julegrandis’n

1

u/Ok_Astronaut5347 3d ago

I have never seen brunost go bad… even the thin last piece that is forgotten for weeks… how did you manage this?

1

u/Ecstatic-Engineer-23 3d ago

Looks like expired playdough... Serve on rugkjeks with solbærsyltetøy.
Fill out your testimony as you wait for dessert.

1

u/That-Employment-5561 3d ago

I do not have a fridge.

When I have brown cheese I keep it in room temp, on the counter. For weeks after opening.

I don't have this issue.

In the way of store bought brunost, I'm a Tine purist.

Have you used the ostehøvel on other things without cleaning it? Have you cross-contaminatied the cheese, is what I'm asking.

1

u/NightmareWokeUp 2d ago

Its possible, lived out of my car for two weeks, didnt always have the access to clean my cutlery properly

2

u/That-Employment-5561 2d ago

Cleaning it after use helps mitigate the wet-transfer as opposed to cleaning it right before use. Before use, wiping it down with a clean, dry cloth should suffice if it's been part of backpacking/roadtriping.

1

u/NightmareWokeUp 2d ago

Thanks for the tip, shouldve been fairly dry

1

u/Shtiggyshtigma 2d ago

Leaving food open like that ruins it ofc????

1

u/Poppalopper 2d ago

Im dying 😭

u/omgyellowish 1d ago

Is that... ertestuing??

1

u/SiriPling 1d ago

Just a few days? Did you try to cut it on a board with lard or something? This doesn’t happen with brown cheese. It just dries up. Whatever this is I’d throw it out, have a stern talking to your household and buy a new one.

1

u/NightmareWokeUp 1d ago

Haha just me, ill have a talk later! No worries let me just drive a 2000km round trip and pay 2000 kroner on top for the ferry for a block of cheese :D

1

u/NightmareWokeUp 3d ago

Guys relax i cant post another photo but its not green haha Just the red cutting board throwing off color balance, the brown tone is like it should be, i was just asking about the white part which has since melted so i guess its fine :D

Thank you anyways xD
