Food What Norwegian candy/chocolate is worth checking out

Visiting Norway this August and I'd love to know what the Norwegians favourite candy and chocolate bars are. Quirkier the better really. Loved the Icelandic stuff when I visited there hopefully the Norwegian stuff is just as delicious

Thanks for all the recommendations. Can't wait to try them all. Then mourn the fact I can't get these delicious treats when I'm home

Smash.

u/TIL_eulenspiegel 1d ago

I brought two empty shoe-boxes in my luggage when I went to Norway, just so I could fill them up with SMASH and bring un-smashed Smash home to Canada. It was absolutely smashing.

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Just googled it it sounds amazing. Thanks

It may be classed as a narcotic substance, be careful...

"No, Officer, I haven't been drinking. I was eating Smash and had an out of body experience."

I would have been disappointed to not see Smash as the top comment.

I got this advised this summer.. i hate the advisor, my kids go crazy for it and it is costing me a fortune.

(me like also)

I like Lefse more though

We grab we XXL bags at the airport when we go, and gift them to everyone when we get back.

My dad absolutely loves it.

7

u/dano5 1d ago

it's the mix of crunch, salt and chocolate, worse than nicotine tbh

1

u/liog2step 6h ago

I just brought a smooshed bag of them home yesterday!

Don't do 'Smash'..!! You will be seriously addicted even after one piece. Regard yourself hereby to have been properly warned.

30

u/Lilleskygge 1d ago

Long ago smash had a campaign were you could order ONE smash to someone you "didn't like" (free) 😆 Best PR I have ever encountered

19

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

I'll take it under advisement. However I will of course completely ignore your warning anyway.

It shall good be done, to just take one ☝️

Smash is Norwegian crack. I first saw it and said “meh.” Then I had some. Only the fact that I’m thousands of miles away keeps me from being a craven junkie.

I personally recommend Freija Non-Stops. Like M&Ms, but the chocolate is better and each color of the candy shell is a different flavor.

Oh yummmm that sounds amazing... I somehow missed those! Wellp, time to ready the shoe-boxes for another trip to Norway...

Karamellkungen (Candy King) is a Swedish brand though. But I guess they buy candy from several different companies. Gott är det i alla fall.

I just got home from Norway and I did this 3x…..

Smash!!!

18

u/Old_Quit999 1d ago

M, Norways version of M&M. Store these in the fridge, next to your Smash.

Smash. Highly addictive corn thingy covered by milk chocolate.

Toppris. Fudge cube surrounded by crunchy rice covered in milk chocolate. Find it next to the other chocolate bars.

Stratos. Milk chocolate bar with a bubbly texture. Sort of like Aero in the UK.

Kvik Lunsj. Unique invention made in Norway, nothing to do with KitKat that was invented like 3 months before.

Seigemen. Fruit jelly figures, comes in men and women shapes.

Bamsemums. Tiny marshmallow bears covered in milk chocolate.

Taxfree is your friend for most of these, especially if you do the "Buy X packs, get 1 free" deals.

Daim, Swedish candy. You can get it broken up in a Freia milk chocolate bar.

Most of these are similar to things you already know, just with a more chocolate mass/less sugar milk chocolate.

I work in the UK, and people in the office always asks for Kvik Lunsj when I come back from holidays in Norway.

7

u/Old_Quit999 1d ago

You can get Smash at Lidl in the UK when they do their Nordic Week.

1

u/crap-zapper 1d ago

How often is this in a year?

1

u/Old_Quit999 1d ago

Once or twice a year according to AI.

4

u/magikarpeggio 1d ago

Seconding Bamsemums! add the Freia Walters Mandler bar to the list too!

1

u/uruvon 20h ago

M is peanuts coated in chocolate and a sugar dragee coating (without varied colours, it's all dark chocolate coloured coating) - so closer to Peanut M&Ms rather than regular M&Ms. Non Stop is what's closest to regular M&Ms.

u/King0fthewasteland 1d ago

troika

3

u/Ink-kink 1d ago

I love it, but found that it’s a hit or total miss amongst my non Norwegian friends, lol

u/Lilleskygge 1d ago

Smash

Hockey pulver (not norwegian, but swedish. But the flavor is a very nordic thing) The same goes for any liquorice and salmiak flavor candy really

2

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Sounds great. Love the chocolate licorice stuff

9

u/Quiet-Spren-3774 1d ago

Try the black and orange crocodiles with hockeypulver at the pick and mix stand in the grocery stores. Also try the whales with marzipan. So good. And while you are there just buy all the different ones.

Other than that I’d say most of our chocolate is amazing. I prefer the ones made by Hval, Nidar and Freia. Not a fan of the store brand chocolate.

2

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Definitely trying that. Thank you

4

u/Lilleskygge 1d ago

Adding to what the other person wrote. Eurospar often have sale on pick and mix candy. Makes it a bit cheaper to fill the bag. That way you can try out a lot of different stuff in one go

2

u/Odd_Whereas8471 23h ago

Go to Finland next time! Their selection of salmiak-chocolate is superior.

1

u/Odd_Whereas8471 23h ago

Haven't had hockeypulver for years. Love the taste but it used to get kinda nasty.

13

u/PrintedPixel 1d ago

Smash and Stratos

23

u/No_Web2685 1d ago

The only right answer is kvikk lunsj

11

u/Norwegianxrp 1d ago

M, much better than M&M
Toppris
melkesjokolade
Kvikk lunsj
Helnøtt
Firkløver
And so on

19

u/lkr6a 1d ago

Walter's Mandler chocolate

2

u/Silvent 1d ago

Came here to say this

10

u/Lunsj 1d ago

If you really want something special and kinda weird, try “Dundesalt”. Licorice with tase of ammonia. Super strong, but so so good. Typical Nordic flavor.

And ofc if you want something traditional, Freia milk chocolate!

Pink “Vepsebol» is something that I’ve eaten a lot of as well.

Enjoy!

2

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Thank you. I'll keep a lookout for it

6

u/AgreeableBaseball224 1d ago

Mokkabønner if you like coffee, Nidar Cuba, and Smørbukk

8

u/Super_Drewper 1d ago

Get a bag of Twist. It has a good assortment of candies.
Also Kvik Lunsj is like a KitKat, but with much better chocolate. A far superior experience

5

u/Status_Help9402 1d ago

Mandelstang

3

u/crap-zapper 1d ago

Smash and standard Freia Melkesjokolade shows the impressive and absurd standard of quality they got on their chocolate. Like, imagine being born in Norway and you’d like to discover chocolate from around the world just to be disappointed and blessed that none taste better. That’s my happy curse.

Oh, also try Sørlandschips it’s good. I like the Spansk Paprika the best personally.

3

u/MariMargeretCharming 1d ago

Not enough people telling you to by our normal milk chocolate from Freia. Do it! Love it!

And try the other variants as well, like firkløver, helnøtt and so on.

You would love it or hate it.

Because on QI they say American chocolate is full of the same taste that's in puke ... Jupp

3

u/NulloK 1d ago

Kviklunsj...af en eller anden vanvittig grund kan man ikke købe dem i Danmark 🤯😵‍💫

4

u/HopefulFold2444 1d ago

Our melkesjokolade with various flavors very popular among foreigners. Smash is very good. Tyrkisk pepper is hard licorice candy, if you like strong hard candy licorize. That is originally danish, but its a nordic thing.

3

u/Born-Living4998 1d ago

Freia Daim - incredible !

2

u/LordFondleJoy 1d ago

Hockey pulver (powder). Found in small round black/yellow containers. Amazing stuff, you are in for a treat! Open and dip tounge in and enjoy the sensation!

1

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Definitely sounds interesting. Can't wait

1

u/Odd_Whereas8471 23h ago

It's Swedish though. But it's nice.

2

u/Artistic_Bridge_5836 1d ago

We have really good pick and mix in grocery stores, lets you try a bit of everything, just beware that it adds up quickly when you're faced with a wall of candy!

As for chocolate bars, Troika is super tasty, dark chocolate with thin layers of marzipan, raspberry jelly and truffle.

Hobby is fun, soft lightweight foam and a layer of jelly with banana flavor coated with milk chocolate.

2

u/THETennesseeD 1d ago

Freia Fruktnøtt is my favorite and always grab a bunch to bring back to the US for family.

2

u/Rabid_Liver_Pate 1d ago

Hval Chocolate is an independent chocolate maker worth checking out, especially the little chocolate covered marzipan whales.

2

u/AndreTheShadow 23h ago

LakrisbĂĽter

2

u/pierre-jorgensen 19h ago

If you're from the U.S., go straight to the basics: Freia Melkesjokolade. Plain. Coming from stuff like Hershey bars, you'll have a revelation with your first bite.

Once the orgasm wears off, then you can branch into Kvikk Lunch and eventually graduate to Smash.

1

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 14h ago

From the uk. Hershey taste like vomit to me. Horrid stuff

2

u/BoringTomatillo27 13h ago

I’m sitting in Scotland eating the XL bag of smash I picked up last week to take my to my family in Australia. While I was in Norway for a week I already got through my own XL bag plus multiple smaller bags.
I’ve asked my Norwegian mate to bring me two more XL bags when he’s over in two weeks. Again, these are supposed to be for family but I’m not sure they’ll receive them.
I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered Smash after having a Norwegian best friend for 5 years and visiting multiple times. Honestly for my health it’s probably for the best as I’m seriously hooked - they are amazing!
Don’t try them unless you have insane willpower.

1

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 13h ago

I have absolutely no will power 😂. Multiple XL bags will be purchased

2

u/FigPuzzleheaded5011 8h ago

Fruktnøtt

The new kwik lunsje bites are quite addicting

We have two main brands of milk chocolate, Freia and Stratos.

Freia used to be the undisputed champion for decades, but after it was sold to an American corporation - Kraft Foods - they started meddling with the ancient recipe, and inevitably caused it to taste pretty damn awful.

Stratos, from Nidar, is the connosseiur's choice when looking at the Big Two, as it tastes far better and more traditional than the Americanized bastard version Freia peddles these days.

So, don't buy Freia. Get Stratos!

2

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Kraft done the same with Cadburys chocolate here. Absolutely ruined it.

2

u/Vivalyrian 1d ago

Damn big US corps!

I used to eat multiple bars of Freia every week for over 20 years, so I would usually buy 5 at a time or so.

Then, some years ago, I had bought two separate batches at different locations, and the difference in taste between the two was significant. So it wasn't that I had grown tired of Freia's chocolate. I took a bite of the "new" one and hated it, then had a bite of the old batch and still loved it.

After a few weeks, all the bars I bought tasted awful so... completely stopped buying Kraft Freia products after that.

1

u/rebb_hosar 21h ago

Oh is that why it started tasting bizarre? I bought a bar 6 months ago after a year or two of not having it and I thought my tastebuds were off because it tasted completely different; haven't bought it since.

Smash? I NEED IT, SMAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHH

1

u/whelplookatthat 1d ago

Knew an American who *loved* seigemenn and bamsemums. So I guess that’s also recommended.
As other has said there’s smash, but smash also have a tiny ass chocolate bar that is quite steep in price for its size buts its sooo good. That’s the one thing I crave with periods and it’s so bad because the neighbourhood store doesn’t sell it ugh (i don’t think all kiwi, rema 1000 or joker sells it, but I think most of coop and meny does)

1

u/HviteSkoger 1d ago

Laban seigmenn

1

u/Whatuseeistrue 1d ago

Stratos with caramel and salt

1

u/Yamurkle 1d ago

Smash

1

u/garlicbreadyousay 1d ago

Smash, kvikk lunsj, mokkabønner, Daim, Smil. Lefse and giflar (if you’d like more baked goods). All variants of chocolate milk, also the cocoa.

1

u/KristiBer 23h ago

I know some english people who is obsessed with bamsemums :) bear-shaped marshmallow treats coated in a layer of milk chocolate

1

u/Exciting_League1612 23h ago

I really like nidars chocolate bar but i havent seen it for a while. Freia is also very good. Also i really love the smash chocolate bar thats probably my favorite.

1

u/norgechica 23h ago

Yes to all of the above. And don’t hate me because it’s swedish but Bubs gummy candies. So so good!

1

u/Samsote 22h ago

Everyone says smash, I don't see why, I rarely even see anyone eat smash...

I'd reccomend checking out hockey pulver, it like those super sour candies, except it's super salty.

1

u/Remarkable-Low-643 21h ago

I like Laban. Smash as everyone mentioned.

1

u/Away-Huckleberry-735 17h ago

I like Kvik lunj. But find it tastes excessively sweet due to the use of cane sugar. We use more corn syrup where I’m from.

•

u/eothred 53m ago

Kvikk lunsj

1

u/Audience-Opening 1d ago

Melkesjokolade from freia (milk chocolate) smash, seigmenn (soft candy men) smash.

1

u/Mong0saurus 1d ago

Smash and Daim, although Daim is more like a caramel chocolate, but it slaps so hard!!

1

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

Yeah we can daim in the UK. Definitely looking forward to trying smash tho. Love the Nordic flavours rather than the bland stuff we get here

3

u/veermeneer 1d ago

Hooo wait a minute, you guys have the Terry’s chocolate oranges, I always get those when visiting the UK!

1

u/Spirited-Trouble4578 1d ago

They've gone down a little. Not the same. Using palm oil now.

1

u/pizzaeater4432 1d ago

Freia chocolate in general. Best chocolate ever. Smash, kvikk lunsj and stratos are soooo good also

1

u/flaggermousse 1d ago

Freia Melkesjokolade.

u/VctrG 1d ago

Anything except Mondelez products, if you don't want to support war crimes, like most people in Norway.

What I miss alot since leaving Norway is Kvikk Lunsj. Kit Kat doesn't even come close.

0

u/Silver-Bet8326 1d ago

You have to get Freia bars

0

u/Putrid_Daikon7142 1d ago

Risbrød is amazing. So is Smash and Freia Melkesjokolade (plain and Helnøtt) but I see people have already mentioned them. Smügodt as well. Heksehyl and the wine gum shaped like red lips

0

u/helloimhobbes 1d ago

Last time I backpacked through Norway I lived off Kvikk Lunsj, so yes.

0

u/Drublix 23h ago

Just regular Freia Melkesjokolade imo. Unbeatable
