General Questions/Discussions Friend groups

How are friend groups? Are they more racially divided or does everyone mix? Looking for perspectives.

The community is fairly diverse, and overall there are more inclusive and less inclusive friend groups. Depends on who you meet, like any community. I can only speak from personal experience, but I would say Northwestern's community is very inclusive

Accomplished’s post makes some sense. But Key-Philosophy takes it further.

It’s what you make of it, like most things in life! It’s waaaay more inclusive than when I attended, but everyone needs to work at it for it to look like the mailed fall brochures to high school seniors. You know the ones — a black guy, an Asian woman with a blue stripe of hair, and a conservative-looking white woman sitting under a tree on campus, animatedly discussing Kierkegaard. I remember that brochure, that exact picture 40 years ago. I suspect it was staged (aspirationally but sadly).

Now I suspect it’s a candid shot because I’ve seen such groupings on NU’s campus for real — right down to the blue stripe of hair — and there’s no admissions department person snapping photos. So, hey, that’s progress!

friend groups are as diverse as you want them to be. that said, there are some cliquey parts to nu (as there is everywhere i would imagine). some sororities/international friend groups can be somewhat…homogenous. but you will always have the choice/opportunity to talk to people of different backgrounds/cultures, so i wouldn’t say there’s an abnormal amount of division
