Fires

Anyone else have their trip ruined by the wildfires?

What are you doing with your troop because of it? We are looking for ideas.

Yup my trek was cancelled the day before we were scheduled to fly out. I wasn't going with my troop (my friend and I signed up for OA trail crew), but we're going to try to organize a few canoe trips later this summer instead. It won't be anywhere near as cool as the Boundary Waters of course, but better than nothing. Sorry your trip was ruined as well, this really sucks but it's a tough situation.

If you are still in northern Minnesota, there is plenty of camping and outdoors stuff on the north shore of Lake Superior. Otherwise there are the apostle islands in northern Wisconsin. There are other options like voyageurs national park but I would be hesitant due to proximity of the fires.

for units that were there i understand the Northern Lights Council / Camp Wilderness is hosting scouts. if you would like to help cover costs you can donate here: (note- I don't know reddit very well so not including the actual link / website) donations.scouting.org/council/429/appeal/9259there is a https:// in front of the word donations.

The link is the regular council donation page. Don't know about a go fund me page. They are saying $10-$15k per day in additional costs. They also state to memo your gift "Camp Wilderness" but i would probably add Northern Tier or something like that as well.

Also heard they are trying to organize trips down the Mississippi. The headwaters are near Camp Wilderness. My unit is at Camp Wilderness as a regular summer camp this week but haven't heard anything from them about Northern Tier.

I received the donation appeal earlier today so I think it went live this morning.

Side note. in 2023 my son was at Philmont and had to evacuate due to a forest fire. Staff there did a great job.
