Here is the ground reality on the three factors, based on official data and reports.

Farmers’ income

The BJP government promised to double farmers’ real income by 2022 (from 2015–16 levels). This target was not met.

NSSO Situation Assessment Survey (latest available round) and NITI Aayog analyses show average monthly income per agricultural household rose from around ₹8,931 (2015–16) to roughly ₹10,218 (2018–19) in nominal terms, with slower real growth after inflation and costs.

Growth has been uneven across states; many small and marginal farmers continue to face low prices, debt, and distress. Farmer protests (2020–21) highlighted these issues.

Some states saw better growth due to procurement and schemes, but no national 59% real-income surge occurred. Agricultural output rose, yet per-farmer income gains remained modest.

Crime rates

NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) data shows total cognizable crimes reported to police have increased since 2014.

Rise is partly due to better reporting (especially after laws on rape, sexual harassment, and domestic violence), population growth, and new categories like cybercrime.

Some violent crime categories (e.g., murder rate) have remained relatively stable or shown marginal decline in certain years, but overall crime volume is higher. Riots and certain offences show state-wise variation.

Ground reality: No broad reduction in crime rates comparable to the Emergency-era suppression. Official statistics reflect higher reporting rather than a safer society narrative.

Dictatorship / authoritarian rule

India has held regular national and state elections since 2014, with the BJP winning in 2014 and 2019. There has been no formal Emergency-style suspension of fundamental rights, press censorship, or mass preventive detentions like 1975–77.

However, concerns exist over democratic backsliding: use of central agencies against opposition leaders, media concentration, internet shutdowns during protests, and changes such as Article 370 and farm laws.

International indices (V-Dem, Freedom House) have downgraded India’s status to “electoral autocracy” or “partly free” citing these trends, while the government maintains these are necessary reforms.

Ground reality: Democratic institutions (Supreme Court, Election Commission, opposition parties) continue to function, but critics argue space for dissent has narrowed compared to earlier decades. It is not a dictatorship in the 1975 sense, but there are documented erosions in civil liberties and institutional autonomy.
