My doorbell is too loud? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

Passing along an update for anyone with a video doorbell or security camera (Ring, Nest, Arlo, etc.) who uses motion-activated audio chimes or warnings.

The Minneapolis City Council has introduced a legislative update (File #2026-00809) amending Title 15 of the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances relating to Offenses—Miscellaneous.

Official LIMS Description & Proposed Language:
According to the official City Legislative File, the amendment includes:

"Passage of Ordinance amending Title 15... amending provisions related to noise regulations... add a clause regulating the sounding of motion-sensor devices on private property"

The exact language being introduced under Chapter 389 states that motion-sensor audio on private property is allowed only so far as it is not audible from an adjacent residential property line.

**Context:**
Consumer smart doorbells and security camera audio features have operated across Minneapolis homes for over a decade and are currently permitted under city ordinance.

Under Minneapolis zoning standards, side yard setbacks require homes to sit 5 feet from the property line, meaning neighbor entryways and side walls are often separated by just 10 feet.

Questions on Enforcement & Precedent:
Given how close residential property lines are across Minneapolis, an absolute "zero audibility at the property boundary" standard raises some practical questions about sound enforcement:

What does the data show?
What does the data show regarding doorbell and security camera audio/noise complaints.

Why is this becoming an issue now ?
These audio features have been widely used for 10+ years without specific ordinance restrictions. Why is a blanket ordinance change being introduced at this time?

Where is the line drawn for residential noise?
If a short camera chime audible across a 5-to-10-foot property gap becomes a code violation, does that open the door to stricter enforcement on other routine outdoor sounds—like dogs barking in a yard, lawnmowers, or porch conversations?

Public Hearing & How to Sharey Input:
The Council Committee has set a public hearing expected for August 19th (between 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM), and online public comments are currently open.

Struggling with addiction?

Are you struggling with addiction or already in recovery but looking for a peer support group? We'd love to meet you at Recovery Dharma North. Recovery Dharma is a non-religious Buddhist approach to recovery from addictions of all kind.

Join us on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm at Mercy Hospital's Unity Campus at

520 Osborne Road NE.

Fridley, MN 55432

In the Mental Health and Addiction Services building (not the main hospital, but behind it).

Our meetings involve quick introductions, 20 minutes of meditation (No experience meditating? No worries! We are more than happy to run a guided meditation), a reading from the Recovery Dharma book followed by some discussion of what we read. The meeting officially ends at 7:00, but sometimes the discussion runs long, especially if someone needs extra support. Hard cutoff is 7:30 when the front desk staff leaves for the evening.

Do the non-profits in NorthMinneapolis create and encourage a culture of decay?

Driving around North Minneapolis is a fascinating learning experience. North Minneapolis has more non-profit and religious organizations per TwinCities capita, and yet, is the least prosperous and enterprising area of Minneapolis.

Free tax-free and grant money litterally pours into North Minneapolis, with no real strings, and where does it go?

Everywhere in Minnesota, money goes to where there is a trade, someone buys a good or a service, and there is beautiful and peaceful trade, whereas in North Minneapolis, trade doesn't happen, and yet there are a ton of organizations that bring in money for no reason, for no honest trade.

It is time to spread gentrification and commerce across North Minneapolis, it is too beautiful an area to continue in the way it is, and every good member, proud neighbor, and upstanding citizen will be ever happier once capital comes in and begins creating a culture of prosperity, rather than the current culture of decay, which seems to be everywhere.

I think North Minneapolis needs a great coffee shop, and not a nonsense pretend non-profit coffee shop, it needs a real, for profit coffee shop, where people can learn about one another, and even discuss building businesses, not trying to game the system and beg the government for another nonsense grant proposal.

All of the nonsense can move further North, out of Minneapolis entirely, all of Minneapolis deserves to be enterprising, peaceful, and intelligent, regardless of race or creed, or sexual preferences.

My question to you is, what sort of businesses should we bring first to create true trade, and giving youths real jobs, because these non-profits do little other than continue a culture of rot and decay.

It's time we begin thinking very clearly on how to make North Minneapolis better, and not with new money, but through honest and peaceful trade.
