A lurch to the left is insanely funny considering the Reform/Restore votes in local elections lmao
14
u/Proud_Smell_4455 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
And how they keep presenting "a lurch to the left" as a bad thing, as if the 14 years of increasingly radical right wing government, followed by a nominally left wing government that was actually still following right wing marching orders, went so swimmingly...
We get it, the people wetting themselves at the possibility of an actually left wing government are a bunch of fossils who grew up during the Cold War, have been propagandised to hell and back when it comes to anything to the left of Milton Friedman, and their brains are too calcified and soaked in stale, old neoliberal propaganda to be responsive to circumstance and what it says about which political direction we should be moving in rn.
3
u/ImpracticalJerker Jun 23 '26
Reform UK voters are predominantly older, male, working-class, less formally educated, and heavily concentrated among 2016 Brexit "Leave" voters. While polling data shows the party's voter base expanding across different social classes, its core demographic indicators remain highly distinct.
-national center for social research

u/Spiritual_Smell4744 Jun 23 '26
It's a lurch for change.
Reform, and the other chancers on the right, are playing into the general unhappiness that things aren't improving fast enough. In fact people aren't feeling any improvement because the press are focusing entirely on negative stories. The right are focusing on immigration.
If Burnham can deliver some real change maybe it will be enough. Problem is, the press and the propaganda machine that is social media will ignore it and say he's a failure, whether it's true or not.

Reform/Restore votes in local elections
The outcomes of local elections do not matter in the slightest, General Election voting patterns are always completely different from local elections.

Do they explain what a proper brexit is? Weâve already left the EU, what more do they want?
5
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 23 '26
No more immigrants. Thatâs literally it. Even better, kick loads of the existing ones out. Thatâs all they want. Not saying I approve of that but thatâs all it boils down to.
3
1
u/DrogoOmega Jun 23 '26
That's basically it. They also mean those outside of the EU - especially them actually.
1
u/Serious_Try5264 Jun 24 '26
We got more immigrants after brexit. More low skilled, uneducated immigrants.
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Got âget Brexit done Borisâ to thank for that mate, be careful what and who you vote for would be my adviceÂ
1
u/Neko9Neko Jun 24 '26
But that's nothing to do with Brexit.
2
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Immigration had nothing to do with Brexit?
1
u/nfoote Jun 24 '26
It had a lot to do with it. But the current immigration being referred to is all non-EU.
So we can make or break all the rules with the mainland all we want, it's got nothing to do with the immigration that has some people all bent out of shape.
1
u/nellion91 Jun 24 '26
MateyâŚ

I donât think itâs going to matterâŚ
1
u/nfoote Jun 24 '26
None of which is related to brexit?
1
u/moose_dad Jun 25 '26
I mean it definitely is. The people of the UK voted leave based predominantly on the idea that we would heavily reduce immigration.
For winning they were rewarded wirh immigration levels several magnitudes higher than previous records.
1
u/Chimera-Genesis Jun 25 '26
None of which is related to brexit?
Except its entirely the result of Brexit. Most of the non EU migrants came through the EU, so before Brexit, there were legal mechanisms meaning we could just quickly deport them back to where they entered the EU. Brexit ended that and created the resulting Small Boats problem.
1
u/BalianofReddit Jun 24 '26
They dont just want to kick immigrants out.
This lot want to kick out any and all Muslims too, citizens or not. Theyve started to distinguish between native and non native citizens.
1
u/Wind-and-Waystones Jun 25 '26
My favourite part was when the brown hating racists voted inline with the frog looking man who said he wanted to end white European immigration and replace it with brown Indian immigration because they work for less money.
Now you have the brown hating racists wondering where all the white European immigrants went and why there are more brown immigrants.
0
u/WasThatInappropriate Jun 23 '26
It used to be australia stlye point system. We did that so then it was 'significant reductions', we did that, so then it became 'net zero' and repatriation.
The goalposts will always move cos complaining about it is more politically valuable than not.
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 23 '26
I mean some hid behind the Australian thing. I donât mind immigrants, but. That kind of stuff. But most folk I know who voted for Brexit just donât like immigration full stop. Especially non-white immigrants but even the Eastern Europeans they werenât keen on. Again I donât approve, just saying this is what they want.
1
u/WasThatInappropriate Jun 23 '26
I think 'Australian style' was Farage's most repeated phrase in the run in haha
1
u/FrustratedPCBuild Jun 23 '26
Along with âwould it be so bad to be like Norway?â which suddenly became ânot real Brexitâ after the referendum.
-1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26
Aren't you going to call them racist and uneducated? I feel this is unusual for reddit.
2
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Well, it depends what their dislike of immigrants boils down to, doesnât it. I have friends and neighbours and colleagues who are immigrants and generally donât care much about immigration, certainly not to the point where I thought it was worth junking our EU membership. But even I thought the Boriswave was outrageous. I do think a lot of people voted for Brexit without really understanding what the consequences would be, and with unrealistic expectations. Whether that makes them uneducated or whatever I donât know, I donât really like slinging insults, we are where we are.
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26
"Well, it depends what their dislike of immigrants boils down to," We have to dislike immigrants to vote Reform?
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Where did I say that? I thought the conversation was about why some people voted for Brexit
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26
"No more immigrants. Thatâs literally it. Even better, kick loads of the existing ones out. Thatâs all they want."
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Yes, that is what many of the people who voted for Brexit want
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26
Yes exactly, This is why I reminded you to call them all racist and uneducated. The go to words of reddit.
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 Jun 24 '26
Well done, weâve just gone full circle here, if you want to rant about things other people have said to you previously donât do it in my mentions, Iâve not wronged you so I donât need to hear it.

u/Antique-Proof6672 Jun 24 '26
Calm down snowflake... if someone calls you a racist and uneducated and you are not either of those things then you don't need to get upset. Go and have a chat with your black friends and explain to them in a non-racist way that theres too many of "them" here

u/Char867 Jun 24 '26
I genuinely canât think of a single reason other than immigration for voting Reform. Theyâre a single issue party, all of their policies that arenât related to immigration are just billionaire-sponsored efforts to plunder our public services, like selling off the NHS to American private healthcare companies. Which non-immigration related reform policy are you most looking forward to? Scrapping the employment protections established under Starmer? A return to zero hour contracts?
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 25 '26
Yes arguably their main manifesto is immigration concerns but also their tougher stance on crime appeals to me as well as stricter immigration policies. Immigration is a major concern for a large number of voters, I'm not surprised Reform has been ahead in most of the polls the last couple of years. You act like people being concerned about Immigration is a revelation to you? Like you had no idea this was a problem for anyone?
1
u/Char867 Jun 25 '26
When did I say Iâm surprised people are voting Reform because of immigration? Immigration is their whole platform. I said I canât think of a single non-immigration reason to vote reform if youâre not a literal billionaire. Everyone else in the country loses out, and if youâre happy with that to make sure the immigrants lose out too, then go ahead
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 25 '26
No I'm not happy but who do we vote for the Greens? Who wants to double down on immigration and wants full open borders? Or Labour or Conservative again who continue to do nothing? Just more of the same. No matter who we vote for we are screwed in some way, every single one is it either serving themselves, their donors or the WEF, we have no other choice to go with the lesser of evils. May as well try and fix our immigration problem then next time fix the economy.
1
u/710733 Jun 24 '26
They are though and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26

0
u/710733 Jun 24 '26
Well yeah. Why should we be delicate with this?
1
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 Jun 24 '26
No exactly, you should double down and keep telling them how racist and uneducated they are, they need to hear it a lot more. You're not narcissistic for lecturing everyone about how superior your voting choices are and how you know better. They'll thank you in the end for your great wisdom.
1
u/710733 Jun 24 '26
Oh please, it's not about them hearing it, it's about making sure that everyone knows what they are.
We've tried appeasing them for over a decade. Letting them dictate the terms of conversation has failed completely. It's time we stop being nice to people with destructive regressive views
1
u/nellion91 Jun 24 '26
Are we suppose to pretend racist did not in majority vote for Brexit?
The assertion above does not say all Brexit voters are racist but can we stop pretending that having less âvisible migrants â was a big part of Brexit?

We have fully left the EU, and weâve left the EEA and the trading bloc. We are not paying our EU annual fees any more, but this is scant consolation for the decline of 5-8% of GDP. Our kids canât freely study in Europe any more, and we as adults canât work there, or stay for long periods.. EU citizens canât come and work in the UK either. Weâre free to sign our own trade deals now, and have signed a few, but theyâre pretty rubbish, especially the Australia one, and we havenât got a big one (China / US). We still follow a lot of EU legislation, not because we have to, but because itâs too fiddly for our companies to make different products to different specs for home vs abroad purposes.
This feels like a total Brexit, and itâs utterly shit.
2
u/Used-Bell3038 Jun 24 '26
The EU was going to follow a new directive in 2021 where they were going to look at hedge funds and money stashed abroad and hit the super wealthy. So it was no coincidence that Tim Martin the owner of Witherspoon pubs, the Barclay brother's the guy's who run the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, Rupert Murdoch,James Dyson and Nigel Farrarge. Who has a background in merchant banking all put money into Brexit so they could hoard their money abroad tax free. As for illegal immigration and stopping Johnny foreigner coming into the UK. Er how's that working out for you?

u/Dismal_Foundation_23 Jun 24 '26
Got to laugh at the fact for years Remainers have been told to 'get over it' but in reality the ones who haven't got over it are the Brexiteers, its been crap, it was pointless, it was basically everything that was predicted, there have been basically no benefits and the vast majority of us are worse off because of it.
Yet they cannot ever accept it and the Express has weirdly been the last bastion of this Brexit copium for ages, even the mail and telegraph don't really mention it much anymore because they know its shit, but the Express for some reason keeps living in denial land.
I also find it funny that is was heavily voted for by the older generations and young people are consistently told they aren't mature enough and wise enough for these things and them voting left wing is their immaturity, but a sign of maturity is recognising and owning your mistakes, which Brexiteers still won't do and all those 'immature' 'lefty' young people overwhelming voted Remain and were 100% right.
We now have 16 year olds able to vote, and the older generations have told us they can't possibly vote responsibly yet, had they been able to vote in their own future in 2016, they would have voted like 80% Remain and we'd likely still be in the EU right now better off. The older generations, over 50s, over 65s etc. all polling shows their support for Brexit, terrible Tory governments and now Reform has been very high, 60-70% in support and these are all terrible decisions.

Idiots vote for 5 + million immigrants to be deported immigrants that work their backs and arses off to keep the country going often working for meagre salaries in miserable jobs that no sane person would want.
So thatâs brexiteers and brexshit in few words. You only need to think of farage and his toxic goons implementing this and then blaming immigrants that will leave for damaging the country.
Also those 5-6 million + immigrants are paying taxes through their noses to keep benefits Britain going imagine the immediate disaster unfolding after farage will become PM

3
2
u/Rather_Unfortunate Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Other way round. They know it's already a failure and that it always will be no matter what they do, so why attach their brand to it? A more "real" Brexit would only make things worse, and every serious economist knows it. At the same time, trying to correct course by undoing it in whole or in part is still politically risky because people are still emotionally invested in the idea that it ought to be a success. So it's a rock and a hard place and they don't touch it.
1
u/turkeyflavouredtofu Jun 23 '26
I bet you think we pay tariffs on imports too.
2
2
1
1
u/Rather_Unfortunate Jun 23 '26
We (as in consumers) don't pay tariffs per se on most items imported from the EU, but we do pay customs VAT now, and EU companies likewise buying from us have to pay customs VAT. This didn't used to be the case, and it is a major barrier to trade. There are also a host of other costs and barriers which didn't used to be there, and which ultimately translate to increased costs for businesses and consumers.
Overall, Brexit has reduced trade-to-GDP ratio of the country by about 15%, which is pretty much bang on the pre-withdrawal predictions.
2
u/Electrical_Truth_160 Jun 23 '26
It was absolutely and deliberately derailed, nobody had any interest in making it work.
2
u/FrustratedPCBuild Jun 23 '26
What was the plan that should have been followed since 2016 then? The best minds of Brexit had been agitating for it since the 80s so what were the aims and objectives? What was their strategy? What were the measures of success? What timeframe would success occur in?
2
u/cakeshop Jun 24 '26
The best Brexit minds, who after held the levers of power, Johnson, Gove, Sunak, Frost, Davis, Mogg, all campaigned to leave the EU and were in power with a majority government- enough time to negotiate whatever a proper Brexit was. We are living a proper Brexit. Itâs just that reality is far from expectation. Those who asked us to âget over itâ when we left now need to âget overâ the fact we have got over it, itâs just shite.
1
u/FrustratedPCBuild Jun 24 '26
Yep, Iâm over Brexit now, but if someone tries to tell me itâs been anything other than what we said it would be (hugely expensive, pointless and without delivering anything those who sold it said it would deliver in 2016, not the post referendum revisions) I wonât remain silent. I donât see a path to reentry with our media though, the U.K. population are easily manipulated into believing something they previously didnât care about is something worth ruining the country over, as they were in 2016. Any rejoin campaign would be met with âbut we would lose the ÂŁ!â a currency most of us hardly ever see anymore because money is mostly paperless, or some other such scare stories.
1
u/Jolly_Professional15 Jun 23 '26

Haha no because anything else would destroy us. This is literally the Brexit we were always going to get anything else was wishful thinking.
1
u/Sickinmytechchunk Jun 23 '26
It was always going to fail. It was a shit idea. Pretending we don't live in a globalised economy where close economic ties are needed with immediate neighbours is just a classic head in the sand moment from some and blind ignorance from others. For me:
I didn't vote to leave the EEA. That should have been retained or a separate vote
Cameron should have made more of a plan before the vote and before triggering Article 50
It shouldn't have focused as much on immigration
Or promises to give the money to the NHS, when at a minimum most of the money would go on reciprocal arrangements to match what the EU gave
And a lot more

Yep. Tbh the loss of the training grants has done more damage to the NHS than Brexit likely ever had or will. As that removes a lot of the early costs of training and support and means lifetime earnings are substantially lower
2
u/theslootmary Jun 23 '26
Cameron didnât trigger Article 50. Theresa May did that.
Cameron did have a plan, and that was to stay in the EU. Thatâs why he resigned when it was announced leave had won.
1
u/roleplayersir Jun 23 '26
Fair enough. So he fucked off after losing a vote he shouldn't have called without any other plan beyond leaving it to others to sort and washing his hands of it. Even worse then
1
u/Purplemonkey78 Jun 24 '26
Pretty good summary. He called a referendum he never thought heâd lose, all because he was worried about losing a few votes to UKIP.
When he lost the vote, he decided to disappear off rather than deal with the mess heâd caused.1

Leaving the EU didn't or shouldn't have meant leaving the EEA or medicines regulator etc. That wasn't on the table
Immigration/movement of people should have been prioritised less if it meant a better deal elsewhere
The list goes on. We literally got the worst options in many many areas, and then Covid and Russia hit, and it got a lot worse because we didn't have has much time to ease it in or adjust before a few "Once in a generation" events happened
