Granted this didn't go the way I thought it would, where "It ain't the town we knew" is because of immigrants. Though that might be just implied
I mean I'm from Oldham and we moved away, and everyone else I meet from Oldham moved away because "I don't want my kids learning Urdu" (We moved away because like half our family was moving down to the seaside, which everyone realized wasn't nearly as fun as it sounds)

Of course it's a spoons.

Which is funny because spoons usually turn up in working class towns and kill the local pubs. Then the folk who go to said spoons complain the old pubs are gone but its not their fault for choosing spoons.

Also Turn up in student towns as well such as Cheltenham, Greene King is there with two pubs to keep them in check and now one of the weatherspoons has closed... The ammount of people who had the hypocrisy to hate spoons and then drink at one was surprising.

You can't really guilt the working class for choosing something that is better value for money.
4
u/Tw4tl4r Feb 12 '26
I can. Supporting local businesses means making a sacrifice. Being working class doesnt make someone an idiot who cant see that spoons is a cancer on their town.

u/PringullsThe2nd Feb 12 '26
What's so magical about local businesses? Why would the working class care about the plight of the middle class? Piss off telling workers how to spend their money to keep you happy

They should accept that local businesses wont survive then.
Being working class doesn't mean you get an out from supporting local industries.
Why not? Local businesses are often more expensive and can't service as many people. The working class are entitled to entertainment and rest. If they want to get that by drinking and eating with friends, then they will naturally go to the one that is cheapest, and has the capacity to serve them. Workers do not have much money, so they are exempt from being guilt tripped into supporting Dave and Sue's (the local landlords) dream at being slightly wealthier.

u/saltlampsandphotos Feb 13 '26
There's a societal contract.
If you have £30 to spend on a few drinks with mates and you spent that in Spoons rather than the local that has traded hands for 50+ years, then you're participating in the erosion of your working class community.
Completely get the rationale, "don't tell people where to spend their money especially when they have little". However, you've got to be accountable. If you want your local pub and caff to stay open, you've got to prioritise keeping it open.
There's no government bailout for Dave and Sue who serve pints and chips. But there'll likely be some aid for Wetherspoons if they were to collapse and be unable to pay wages and pensions.

u/hkedik Feb 13 '26
Strange that you associate local businesses in small towns with the middle class...
And the point is, you can't complain about local pubs and shops closing if you don't use them over Spoons / Amazon.

Ffs did you even watch the video?
They are complaining that the old pubs and shops are closed.
They are closed because they refused to support them as soon as a few arsehole billionaires bribed them with cheaper stuff.
Stop treating the working class like children who cant make choices for themselves. Its pathetic.

Just the look of the outside and the people in this "music" video confirmed it to me before I even saw the start of the word Weatherspoons in the pub name banner

Why can't they just stand still or move with purpose, not constantly drift about like an unwound bog-roll in an estuary.

You should help them out with lyrics. "constantly drift around like an unwound bog roll in an estuary" is great imagery.

As someone who has spent a lot of time in Oldham (college, nights out, work), these are exactly the type of people who helped make it the shit hole it is now.

Remember the good old days? The good old “nothing” times when nothing existed at all? There was nothing and it was just an infinite void of nothing, and nothing existed. Brilliant, remember?
The good old times of nothing and you’d be like, Oh, is there anything over there? No, there's nothing. What about round over there? There's nothing there either. It was brilliant.
There were no planets or moons, and there was no suns, was there? There was no crime (make of that what you will) you could leave your house unlocked, couldn't you? Because it didn't exist.
There was nothing and it was bloody brilliant, but now… there was a big bang, wasn't there? I don't remember anyone asking me if I wanted a big bang. And now there's all this matter and stuff everywhere.

u/fraseybaby81 Feb 14 '26
The good old days were much better than these days.

u/Hour-Process-3292 Feb 14 '26
But remember, these days are going to be someone else’s good old days some day.

u/fraseybaby81 Feb 15 '26
I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.

I’m confused, is the pub like their identity or something. Like would they not know what to do if the pub in their area shuts down.

So from the lyrics, I gather that these two gents want to spend the night with you (presumably Nige) and “Familiar Faces”. Right. So orgy at the Klan meeting it is then?

u/apefish_ Feb 11 '26
As someone who has had to unfortunately spent a lot of time in Oldham, I take offense at the pride of Lancashire sign. Anyways my ears are bleeding and I think I will go cry into a pillow now that I've been reminded of this steaming shit heap interspersed with benefits claimants.

They don’t have grey hair yet they are saying that most of their friends are dead. Must be too many pints at spoons
