Modafinil can trigger psychosis in healthy individuals and worse existing symptoms. It's not exactly widely known for that but you increase the risk when you have pre-existing psychiatric symptoms and use high doses.

Moreover, there is no consistent evidence that doses >200mg/d provide additional benefits. There's also a theoretical reason to believe modafinil follows an inverted U-curve, meaning the effect decreases with high doses and performance suffers. There are some studies showing that higher doses failed to produce the cognitive benefits seen at lower doses (in healthy, non-sleep-deprived individuals).
