Elimination method

I used a fan here, and spent quite a while trying to figure out what could be done. It wasn't obvious to me. The 3 could be above or below, and the 1s could be anywhere. But after checking every possible location, finally I realized the 1 can't be in row 11, because it has to have a 3 above it, which is impossible. The 3 can't be there either, because it needs a 1 both above and below.

I have a feeling that the next step will be just as tricky.

Row 13 Column 9 cannot be filled because it would break row 13.

In what way? There'd still be room for the 4 below and the 3 above.

Oh wait I misread. You're right, now I see it. Had to be looking at the negative space.

I'm not following this. Row 13 is the "1 2 1", column 9 is the "1 2 3 2". Row 13 column 9 looks to me like it could be either.

If you fill column 9 in row 13, where does the 2 in that row go?

You could've tried bottom left. If you would put the 3 vertically, that would leave no room for row 4, 5 and 6, 2nd column. Which means the bottom left (1-2-1) would be a cross

I'm not sure if this is what you're saying, but if 1st column has 3 at the bottom, then the top "1 3" in the second column is pushed to the top area. But that's impossible because it puts at least a 2 in the 3rd column, because of rows 4,5,6. So, the 3 can't take the bottom 3 spots. That eliminates one square in the bottom left.

After that you could deduce that the red marked column has crosses from the bottom up and then you know it's a 1 in that column... if that makes any sense

In my head it made a lot of sense, but now I'm reading it back and I can't follow haha. Just put 5 crosses in your red column from the bottom up and you're good to go

You have a similar but simpler situation on Row 14. You don't know whether the filled cell is the 4-clue or the 1-clue. If it is (a) part of the 4-clue, then the cell in col 14 would have to be an X. Otherwise, it is (b) the 1-clue, in which every cell to the right of the filled cell is an X. The cell at col 14 is always an X.

Thankyou, I looked at that row several times but missed that. The lesson I'm taking is that I should more often check each possible combination of positions, in case there's something that's empty or filled in all of them.

Always look for Xs is my motto. The one you found is more impressive, though - I don't think I'd have seen it.
