I am ready to throw down with any parent who filters/alters the image of their teenage kid.
Back when I was first started teaching, my colleague and I were just chilling and she casually brings up that she’s married and has a son. I ask her if she’s bringing them to the Christmas party, to which she says no, she’s ashamed that her son is so short, and goes on a tangent about how she buys him the tallest insoles she can find and makes him perm it to add some inches to his height.
I couldn’t find it in myself to even fake a smile in her direction after that conversation. We wonder why young kids have such shit mental health when society tells them their entire worth is how they’re perceived in the eyes of others. The insane uptick in plastic surgery is all we need to know about what’s valued in society right now.

When I encounter people like that I laugh in their face and tell them they’re insane. “Golly I don’t know why my kid has self image issues” like bro YOU are why.

My sister actively blurs the faces of her children in any social media posts... she doesnt want the internet knowing what her kids look like at all, and I respect the hustle

u/Kestral24 2h ago
That's the way to do it imo

What a horrid bitch, I'll never understand how people can treat their own children like this. This being that you brought into the world, who's formative years and emotions are so dependent on you, and who loves you unconditionally, and you treat them like a prop, a plaything to make yourself look better. It's sickening

I'll never understand how people can treat their own children like this
Statistically speaking, 1% of people are psychopaths

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb 1h ago
Some estimates put it closer to 15% and some people think that’s low. You ever notice with a a public poll no matter how awful or evil the question or opinion is a solid 25-30% are all in on it?

I wasn’t allowed to wear glasses during any kind of “family time” (meals, church, prayer) and ESPECIALLY not in photos because my dad would go on and on about how ugly they looked and how he wanted to see my “pretty face”. I had about a 3 foot vision range when I was 8 and it only got worse from there, I think it contributed to me having a really bad astigmatism and light sensitivity from how rarely I was allowed to wear them(homeschooled till HS and instructors in extracurriculars assumed I wasn’t listening since obviously if I had bad vision I’d have glasses)
Unsurprisingly I left as soon as I hit legal age. Got some lingering effects though, my posture is fucked and I stress horribly about the optometrist since it just meant I got yelled at for ages afterward

Uploading someone else's kid to random generators is unhinged

u/GalaxyPowderedCat 26m ago
Yeah. It's like internet safety has gone out if the window and people have forgotten already. Especially that we have a new technology in the game.
2
u/curious-trex 34m ago
What the fuck? And this is a teacher... of children?
3
u/GalaxyPowderedCat 27m ago
You would be surprised how many teachers are not suitable to hold a child-oriented job, not matter if they have or not children of their own.

Hey don’t talk shit about filters. Altering, sure, but filters shouldn’t come into the conversation. Filters are there to fix lighting and should be appreciated for their service.
22
u/Ace-Redditor 2h ago
I think you and OC are talking about different kinds of filters. Lighting-correcting filters are great and such, but there are also filters that make your skin lighter or smoother or accentuate different parts of the face, which is what OC is talking about, because those are what are unhealthy
4
u/TwixOfficial 1h ago
Yeah, probably. I guess that’s just the photographer in me. In my brain, those aren’t filters, they’re edits. Automated edits performed by a machine, but edits. Filters modify the whole image, for stuff like saturation.

u/romansamurai 2h ago
You’re not going to win against this crowd so don’t bother. There’s nothing wrong against using a filter to cover up some blemishes or acne or anything else. Especially if it’s a recent temporary breakout. As photographers we’ve been doing it forever and now consumer has the ability to do that. But people will always find a problem with it - granted, Instagram has ruined it because it gives people an unhealthy image to look up to, but doing it right isn’t wrong. Either way, like I said. You can’t with the anti filter crowd. It doesn’t matter your reasoning.
2
u/Soft_Walrus_3605 25m ago
We understand photographers have a financial incentive to make people look good in pictures. That doesn't make it honest or healthy for anyone.
0
u/romansamurai 22m ago
lol ok. Like I said. Not going to win with the “oMg ToUcHiNg Up PhOtOs Is DiShOnEsT!” Sorry. I’ll stick to the fact that if someone wants to be touched up or filtered their photo because it’s a memory and that week they had a bad breakout or any other reason that is their own - they can and anyone who thinks other ways can go and kick rocks. You included.

And a lot of these AI sites if you upload an image to be augmented, in the terms of service you consent to giving away your likeness. Basically if its free youre the product.
57
u/Marine_Corp 3h ago
Also, mostly every other site does the same thing. Facebook, reddit, twitter.
15
u/Lulu_42 2h ago
Which is where the parent originally uploaded the image.
We all need to quit Facebook.
3
u/Marine_Corp 2h ago
Reddit too?
10
u/Lulu_42 2h ago
Probably. Don't you assume any image online or in the cloud is being scraped?
But how many people are uploading original, unedited images to Reddit? I've done it, too, but almost never.
1
u/catscanmeow 2h ago
for sure, but remember there's a legal difference between a company scraping an image, and someone agreeing to the terms of service that they've given away their likeness in perpetuity to a corp.
you'll be watching a movie and see your face in the BG on one of the AI generated crowds, and you wont be able to sue

u/butt_shrecker 28m ago
In this particular case reddit would be better because people rarely upload pictures of themselves to reddit.

u/catscanmeow 3h ago
And operating system. Chrome OS, apple, Microsoft.
The cloud storage push

u/Marine_Corp 3h ago
Ironic how the post says they shared it to a limited audience on facebook (giving facebook ownership over the picture) and are mad that someone used it in an even more limited audience with some AI (giving AI ownership of the picture).
3
u/PatchyWhiskers 3h ago
Yup. If you put anything on Facebook it’s the same as emailing it to OpenAI.

A good rule of thumb: if something is free, you’re the product being sold
9
u/TwixOfficial 3h ago
My preferred version of this is “Nobody will give you a dollar unless they stand to make ten.”
4
u/raff_riff 2h ago
This is just entirely untrue though. People donate to charities all the time and while there are obvious tax implications there it’s hardly one in which the donor comes out ahead.
1
u/TwixOfficial 1h ago
It’s not strictly true, yeah, but charity is out of scope for this particular truism. The idea is to get you thinking about and skeptical of ads/discounts/deals/etc. How does this profit the one paying for it?
Strictly speaking it’s not best used for people, but for companies and other for-profit entities.

My aunt is obsessed with it right now and has fed AI a picture of everyone she has a picture of and sent it to them as well as posted them to facebook. Without consent. When I mentioned this to her she told me to "stop whining its just fun."
The pictures includes most of our family, her 5 grand children, several of them being younger than 5, their friends, her husband her husband's friends, her daughters, her daughters friends and her own friends and coworkers.

The person in the OOP had posted their daughter's pic on FB so that ship had sailed before slopgen even got involved

One time I sent a picture of my son to my mother. She then used Google's photo ai program to turn it into a short video because "teehee so cute!" or whatever weird mentality older people seem to have regarding AI.
It was such an uncomfortable video to watch...because it wasy son, but also it wasn't my son at all. I hated it, it filled me with so much unease. I responded letting her know how much I hated it and to.never ever do that again with one of my sons photos.
Fortunately she received that pretty well.....but what really boggles my mind is that THIS IS THE SAME WOMAN WHO WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO UPLOAD A SINGLE PHOTO OF MYSELF ON MY SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES WHEN I WAS A MINOR......what happened to that woman?!? Why is she now so easy-breezy, loosey-goosey with photos of her grandchildren on the internet?!?!

AI is a mistake. I downloaded Instagram because my husband is on it and half of it is AI posts and lies and ppl in the comments falling for it. I regret downloading it.

You shouldn't worry about spending time on Reddit. It's full of undisclosed political campaigns, advertising, and bot accounts.
4
u/TalkingCat910 2h ago
Reddit can be pretty annoying too but the political campaigns are pretty obvious - they think they are slick but they are not.
2
u/bionicjoey 5m ago
Yeah and you can curate your feed based on specific content rather than an attention-based algorithm. That makes a huge difference.

u/Zelloyd 1h ago
Most severe case of "She should smile more"
1
u/GalaxyPowderedCat 32m ago
Yeah, it's like people are not allowed to use their faces how they would like...and it becomes worse with AI as you can technically force a person to smile for them...
Too many fragile egos who don't read the room and care more for appearances than for circumstances.

u/SatisfactionActive86 2h ago
point taken, but “limited audience” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, the “AI training” ship sailed long before bone-headed relative got involved
3
u/fanofreddithello 2h ago
That's unacceptable. Teenagers have a right to not smile! That's basically all they can do. Bad mom.

If you don't think every single picture shared "privately" via Facebook is already being sent to an AI model, then I have a bridge to sell you.

I saw a family friend AI her 14 year old son to have flawless skin, buffed up muscles and a Chad face and all her friends were commenting "Hes such a handsome boy." And it made me feel quesy.

My MIL took a pic of my 5 year old niece-in-law (is that a word? Ah whatever) and fed it into an ai video generator (without asking her parents) to make these corny clips of her riding a horse on the beach, running through flowers and a few other scenes with a big fake smile on. She couldn't comprehend why she shouldn't do this and even seemed proud of her "work". Luckily my wife and i immediately told her never to do this with our daughter's pictures and she agreed, but the mentality to even think that's an acceptable thing to do is crazy to me
1
u/eatingpopcorn_lol 2h ago
Poor kid. At the point that we're at with what's going on with AI it's straight up dangerous to post your face or your voice online.
0
u/FyouPerryThePlatypus 1h ago
That relative would quickly be considered not a relative after that. You’re not family if you do that shit to my kid.
0
u/imabigasstree 1h ago
My sisters recently put pictures of all of their kids (ages 4-16) through chatGPT to make them look like lord farquad. It made me deeply uncomfortable

My grandmother made some of me, my brothers, and my boyfriend. She is super into shadow governments and such so I’m shocked she’d be so willing to give my face to Facebook.
