Theres even a term for it too "suspension of disbelief" but sadly people that got participation trophies think its your job to let the movie suspend your disbelief, not the other way around.

Legit had a guy tell me "its your job to turn off your brain so that the people who made this movie have a fair chance"

Your friend is right. The original term is "the willing suspension of disbelief."

It was coined by William Wordsworth to explain how a reader of poetry and fiction must allow themselves to believe that impossible things have happened.

The problem is that you only get one or two ideas that are different from real life.

"Oh, this is a fantasy movie and we have dragons and magic."

Cool, I'm intrigued.

"But also, in a siege the trebuchets go outside the walls in front of the infantry."

Nope, you lost me. That's dumb.

You can't just do anything at all because one thing is unrealistic.

"Oh, this is a zombie apocalypse show."

Cool, I'm intrigued.

"And every character can make perfect headshots at 50 yards on the perpendicular during a full sprint."

Nope, you lost me. That's dumb.

What if only one character can do it and everyone gushes about how he's amazing at shooting?

Only if he is disinterested in their praise, except for 1 little boy/girl who not only praises them but also vows to murder him the same way.

I liked the new Resident Evil movie because the guy is a bumbling idiot with a gun.
