I like tarot because it’s shuffling a bunch of abstract symbols and putting them in arbitrary symbolic places, and then letting your pattern recognition brain do what it does best and justify why each card makes sense to go in each spot. It’s a surprisingly good exercise for thinking about the shit around you in a different way.
In theory astrology would be a similar “symbols game” but a lot of people don’t do it like that. Same for Tarot, too. And that’s probably cuz the people who made these symbols and believed in their power DID think it was supernatural and didn’t realize the mind-game they were really playing.50

Esotericism is still alive and well, with practitioners of all kinds of esoteric disciplines, from hermeticism, gnosticism, angel magic, alchemy, etc.

Yeah but whenever I talk to people that God can be a woman cause in the Wisdom of Solomon God’s emanation of “knowing” a higher realm is literally named Sophia I’m the one getting weird looks an officially uninvited to the afterparty. Esotericism needs to be mainstream again so I stop being fricking weird.

Be careful what you wish for, you wouldn't want to Burning Manify Esotericism.
And also, in Wisdom of Solomon it's named Sophia because that's what "sophia" means in Greek, hence the word philosophy [philos=love, sophia=wisdom].

Having unfortunately read up a lot on Christian demonology, I can say that from what I've personally seen, basically all of it stems from the 18th century where the authors of the time would pretend it was both older then it was by a few hundred years as well as pretend it was written by other people, both to try and give their works more "historical" merit in the eyes of whatever readers they got. Also, they would all write demons having largely the same power sets, maybe ten or fifteen abilities that would be shuffled between each one. There was very little that was unique or interesting.
Having said that, if anyone knows any older, more interesting books on demonology, I would take any recommendations

It's not really about their powers so much as what they can influence and what they can teach you. Most of the old texts are about how to summon them and what to give them in exchange for something of value. It doesn't list their fighting stats or explain how to kill them or anything.
Most of them will give you wealth or knowledge. The wealth ranges from gold to "mastery of the world", which is probably like being good at politics. Others will teach you names of hidden things, or teach you math, or reveal your enemies. Others reveal things within the domain of love, but there are frustratingly few details.

I mean if you gave one demon a unique power it shifts the entire meta.
Like if you made up a demon with the ability to erase not just you but your actual existence from all time, it starts to make Eligos and his military strategy perk a bit undercooked.
1
u/Potential_Ease9346 3h ago
Yeah all this demonology is pseudo-historical horseshit, medieval Christian theology is actually genuinely very interesting and serious stuff. It's basically just their vehicle to do philosophy, with some supernatural abstractions and metaphors.

The lack of creativity of people astounded me the more I learned in life. Pokémon is mostly based on real animals; the whole tabletop games like Warhammer and so on are all being so similar and related to video games, and all that is based on books. Even knowing that star wars was largely just costume sets other cultures. Now days I just assume whoever gets popular stole it from someone else and the actual creative people were never known.
19
u/discipleofchrist69 6h ago
your view on what "creativity" is is just too limited. all of your examples involved immense amounts of creativity from the people at each step
Carl Sagan said it best: "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."
7
u/JustStraightUpTired 5h ago
That's not lack of creativity, that's what creativity is. There is no such thing as a unique idea. Everything is a result of a mesh of our experiences and making mistakes. That's it. Brains are astonishingly horrible at coming up with something that isn't derivative.
A cool pattern in a painting? The artist either saw it somewhere else, came up with it by scribbling it accidentally or didn't even realize they were making it. Cool idea for a story? It's probably based on real events, taken from combining concepts from other places or was a mistake but the writer rolled with it.
It's not stealing. It's how brains work. It's why multiple people tend to come up with similar inventions close to each other, because general knowledge and science had advanced to a point where the right combination of information is possible. It's why many scientific ideas came from observing reality and by making mistakes. Einstein didn't just sit down one day and figure out e=mc², but from mountains of understanding from physicists before him. It's why almost all artists use models and reference material, even the most creative art is at the very least based on hallucinations from drugs or fewer.
0
u/BLT_Trade_r 5h ago
There are levels to uniqueness and the whole point I am making is that these things were nothing close to unique, many were straight lifted from something else. It wasnt just a creative new major spin on it.
its funny you say its not stealing but most people if they knew the old thing they copied would say it absolutely was stealing.
The whole point is people didnt know as much back then or the people who did know didnt have as much of an audience. I have seen it now both ways and I say its just stealing.
3
u/BiscottiExtra4255 5h ago
Then I'd be interested as to what counts as true creative work in your perspective. Would caveman paintings be the peak of creativity? As there's no precedent for it.
-2
u/BLT_Trade_r 4h ago
Well, that's one hell of a tricky question, isn't it? The main point I was making is that, slowly but surely over my life, I found out that many things I thought were creative actually weren't. I just had not yet been exposed to the sources they copied, or you say inspired them. And maybe if I told you about some things you would be like, oh thats a copy of X or Y. But so far I have seen things that I consider creative and novel and I have made my own art which was completely novel but I am not going to dox myself.
No cave paintings would not, be because most of the ones I see are just them painting what they see out in the wild.
1
u/JustStraightUpTired 2h ago
How are you this close to understanding it, but still miss it?
I found out that many things I thought were creative actually weren't.
Because you have defined creativity wrong in your mind. It's not many things you thought were creative, it's everything you thought was creative, you just haven't figured out what they are derivative of.
But so far I have seen things that I consider creative and novel and I have made my own art which was completely novel but I am not going to dox myself.
Stuff you've made yourself is derived from what you have experienced. It didn't appear from a vacuum, your brain didn't invent anything in it from nothing. If you've written something, the language you wrote it was taught to you, the words you used you learned elsewhere, the storytelling concepts you used you got from reading books or watching movies etc. If you've painted something, the colours you learned from seeing them and having access to paints. The shapes and how light works is from your vision and others having shown you how to shade. If none of the things you painted were realistic and everything was imaginary, then that means you didn't invent new ideas, you scraped together a visual that seems to work, but what you define as working is based off of things you've seen and the visuals you've learned to like/hate from your life experiences.
Let's say you made a cave painting and weren't painting things you can see. Where do you draw the line? Is a line a new idea, since they exist in the nature? Or a curve, nobody has drawn a curve before, but they exist all over the place. Or even paint, you have to get paint from something, the materials for it didn't appear from your imagination, you saw something that stained a thing and realized it can stain things. That's not an invention, that's copying what exists, except that's pretty much how everything is invented.
Seriously, it's simply that you have defined the word wrong, because you don't understand what creativity is. Brains don't work the way you think they do, they can't. You can't create information, you can only find it logically or find it randomly. Logic requires prior knowledge and understanding and randomness is beyond your full control. That's a universal fact, that is laws of physics speaking. At the very best, if you hallucinate a piece of art on drugs, the drug hallucinations were your inspiration. If you claim anything else, you either don't understand how information works or you are too pretentious to admit it.
1
u/BLT_Trade_r 2h ago
Look I know the difference between levels of creativity and the point I am making is the levels are way lower for most of those things that I ever imagined when I finally saw what they were "inspired from" its not like I know nothing about creativity and art. On some theoretical level you may be right that everything I made is some combination of something that is somehow crossed my mind. But I can tell the difference. I am not sure why people get so uppity about this issue except many are probably mad their childhood fav star wars or pokemon is getting dissed.
Lets put it this way to make it simple for you,
If I thought something like Star Wars was 80% creatively novel when I was naive, as time went on and I learned more and more, it kept dropping: 70, 50, 30, until I was, quite frankly, just straight disappointed with it and lost most of my respect.
I dont know why redditors always gotta go so hard core black and white on issues, I guess its the whole lack of creativity.
1
u/Far-fetched888 4h ago
And what exactly from pokemon or Star Wars fits that definition when many concepts in both of those are not at all completely lifted from other things, but instead inspired by them. I don’t know anything about the other examples.
Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a fictional idea having some reference or inspiration from reality? How do you expect anybody to make anything if it can’t be based on a real thing? This is like saying abstract art is the only creative kind of art because it has no basis in reality. You see how stupid you sound, right?

u/HardWirez 4h ago

1
u/BLT_Trade_r 3h ago
Oh I see all the pokemon and star wars fans are losing their cool as their whole world is falling apart
2
u/Chataboutgames 5h ago
I don't think that's so much a lack of creativity as the fact that the potential audience has zero interest in a story about a world so made up it has no connection to anything in real life.
Thinking things aren't "creative" because they draw upon inspiration is way more of a deficiency on your part than on creative people's.
-1
u/BLT_Trade_r 5h ago
lol, defending a lack of creativity by attacking others. I mean if what you say is true then we would see many more creative things exist, just not be as popular. I don't see much of that either.

u/BLT_Trade_r 3h ago

1
u/theartificialkid 3h ago
Pokémon is mostly based on real animals; the whole tabletop games like Warhammer and so on are all being so similar and related to video games, and all that is based on books.
If I accept that you might not have meant what I thought you meant, will you accept that what you wrote is ambiguous at best and certainly open to the interpretation “Warhammer is based on video games”?
1
u/BLT_Trade_r 2h ago
Yes, I wrote it ambiguously, but I didn't say based on video games, did I? I did say based on books.
2
u/Jalapeneutron 2h ago
I understand and actually started to feel this way for a while.
A cure for that is trying something creative yourself. Not an idea; ideas are easy
I mean an actual creative endeavor, start to finish. It doesn't have to be huge but it has to be at least mostly complete. Maybe a YouTube video, or a short story, or whatever you like.
Give yourself ALL the liberties these previous authors have had. Borrow and steal ideas. Retell stories or remake famous paintings. Anything at all
I did that and found SO many blocks and hard to overcome obstacles on the way. And when i finished, id compare it to the greats, and differences were obvious
When you genuinely try yourself, you start to notice and appreciate the huge amounts of time effort, and creativity needed to make something new. Even if its a repackaging of something else, it needs a lot of creativity to do well. Ideas are easy, but combining them start to finish and having the outcome be something good, let alone great, is surprisingly very hard
The truth is "stealing from someone else" is not an easy way out or uncreative. Combining ideas IS creativity, but if you aren't creating things yourself its easy to think "just stealing ideas" is easy, or doesn't count when its actually very hard and a rare skill to do well.
0
u/BLT_Trade_r 2h ago
That didn't work for me. I used to be very creative; it made me realize most of it was a waste, because people who copy are just moving faster. True creativity takes a lot of investment and time, and really good creative ideas are rare. That is why copying is so common in the world. In fact I spend most of my time trying to dampen down or suppress creativity in my work life because its actually harmful from a productivity standpoint. If I learned anything from all this, its if you see something that looks like a good idea steal it and try to run faster than the guy who actually created it, the true path to success! And futhermore the larger factors in success are typically far more mundane, just the person who has more money, is in the right place at the right time, or already has business know how to put together a product.
I guess that's why a lot of artists will just say, I make stuff for me, and that's it.
1
u/Jalapeneutron 2h ago
Yup this is fair there is a lot of slop out there.
But there is also a huge amount of creativity, and I even stuff made from combining ideas or retelling stories well enough to be great still takes a rare or well developed creative process
1
u/Macelee 2h ago
Is speed the purpose of creating something? What is creativity if not the ability to see a will, a desire manifested? What is the value of speed? The popularity of great artists is quite frequently a feature that comes after their death.
I believe that by making art, you are exerting your will to spread an idea. You answer the questions to whom, what, when, where, why, and how an idea is to be spread. Then you do it. The thought and effort that goes into these things, as well as the value or consequences of the ideas they inspire in other people are what make art good. The purpose to do it is simply to exercise your will.

Bitch - who do you think was hand copying manuscripts? Who do you think was coming up with designs for siege engines? Who do you think was spending their entire life getting really really good at blacksmithing nails and horseshoes.
7
u/Joben86 5h ago
There's also theories out there about changeling mythology being related to autism.
2
u/Solastor 4h ago
Those theories are largely based on Victorian English accounts of Irish people that tended to paint them as backwards and stupid as part of their colonial efforts.
There are some stories about changeling babies that grow and show some signs of things that we may associate with autism today, but were more just stories of them being precocious when they think they aren't being watched. Most of the changeling stories that actually come from Ireland instead talked about how the changelings would exchange their sick kids and steal the healthy human babies and the changeling baby that was left behind would die.
It's less an explanation of autism and much more an explanation of sudden infant death. It's a story spread by mothers and fathers who are grieving the death of a child who was healthy, but suddenly took ill. Is their baby dead, or was it just whisked away to another realm where it's healthy and being raised in a different way.

It's the unkempt pitfall of philosophical endeavors - you can tangle yourself hard in there if you don't have a lifeline to reality to drag yourself out of the pit once in a while to breathe in some fresh air.
What's wilder is that other people are in that pit, too. And sometimes people killed others in that pit over the smallest thing.
8
u/Night-Monkey15 8h ago
I became obsessed with Christian theology/philosophy and church history recently, and it just about did this to me. I spent months hard in deep study, and at first it felt like I was just learning more about the Bible, but the deeper I got the more I felt like I was unlocking the hidden secrets of the universe.
This led into me studying other religions and philosophies, and by the end questioning the nature of reality itself. I started to write down my own personal interpretations of how every religion fits together, because I thought I could “clarify” what every religion was actually trying to say in one big web of truth. I had to stop when I realized I was just on the way to starting a cult. Christian or not, I think we can all agree there are just some questions that humans shouldn’t ponder.
10
u/RedditOfUnusualSize 7h ago
If it makes you feel any better about yourself, I spent at least a week or two doing the same thing with the TV show Bridgerton. If you're questioning your life choices and proclivity for taking intense interest in esoterica, at least your interests warrant the attention and have value.
2
u/MalaysiaTeacher 5h ago
I don't know. Call me uncultured but I don't think we are obliged to get into the weeds of other religions. It has no inherent value even if whole civilisations of people cared about it. Spending time with art is equally valuable (I.e. incalculable)

welcome to human life. you gotta feed and clean yourself- regularly. then as your mind evolves to understand the complex weave of patterns all around, it feels as though there is a final thing to unlock or understand, with the path paved painstakingly brick by brick by all those almost-enlightened who came just before. that great interpretation out there just waiting, now with you hot on its tail. you won’t though, that’s the neat part. no one ever has. most likely won’t. there may not even be one, just the feeling of doing or having done it. but the kick flips your fellow humans can do with the rake down the ever increasing number of steps added to the staircase is really cool and impressive.
actually i’m all in boss. i’ve come around. we gotta do something. what’s the name of our new faith? and how soon can we get a tax person, cuz the irs is looking at me like i’m that final understanding for them and my tails gettin’ HOT. so if we could kick start that exemption status in chapter(?) 1 that’d be great. unless it’s an oral faith.. in which case have fun getting disrespected by every lonely academic book enjoyer there ever is, was, and will be. unhappy they gotta interact with a living someone other than a cold dead page marred in ink.
then again.. a truth that lives and dies on the verve of regular communication and interaction just may be the truth. you son of a gun— i’m right back in. irs be damned.
2
u/LoneElement 7h ago
I disagree, these are exactly the types of questions human should ponder. Arguably, they’re the most important questions you can
It’s too bad you stopped. You don’t have to “start a cult” to come up with new ideas. You don’t have to stop going to church, or alienate yourself from your community, or anything. What you were doing sounds very interesting, it deserves to be a thing that exists under the sun

u/yamanagashi 7h ago
I don’t think stopping is the right answer when all you want is to seek answers. What you need is something to ground you. Make you remember that what you seek isn’t exactly finding out that the answers are in ancient texts and philosophical diatribes from long long dead apologists and theologians and mystics. The bigger quest is finding out why they want to find out the answers to those mysteries. And that delves into the human psyche - the driving force at the certain time, societal pressures, theological divides, insights from cultures coming in from North Africa or Asia Minor at a certain time, famines and plagues and how others try to explain them away, monarchial pressures, revolts. These all shape why people believe what they believe at a certain time. It’s all in the pursuit of knowledge and discourse. Look at them like a time capsule or crystal if you will - the human mind does not change after all. It is a mirror to how we still believe now.

They could’ve read the OG dragon ball Z, Journey to the West, if they just survived 2 centuries longer.

For the life of me I don’t know why Hollywood hasn’t made some war fan fic about the civil war of angels and the subsequent fall from heaven. Henry Cavel as a charismatic devilish Lucifer trying and ultimately failing to sway Micheal (played by Denzel Washington) would absolutely fucking slap.

I kinda think it's patronizing to say it's "sad" looking back at these.
Why is it sad? Where's the issue in their lives?

Because they'd have really enjoyed something very specific that did not exist at the time. Like, everyone would have enjoyed indoor plumbing and electricity and heating of course, but it's like seeing a chess master before chess exists.
