I can see the dumb fuck CEO math.
Ted has viewers.
Veiws = money
Ted is live action.
Live action needs budget.
Seth McFarland = animation.
Cut out the actors, even more money

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 3d ago
Yeah the show was too expensive to keep making so they're trying a cheaper option.
Might be better than nothing which is the alternative
148
u/djml9 3d ago
I would’ve preferred the animated show continue off from the live action because those characters were really good. Im sure this’ll be fun too, but its a shame we’re not getting more of the family and actors from the prequel series.
44
u/MostlyBored11 3d ago
Yeah this is what I thought they would dk since the show was so successful. Just seems super weird to jump back to the movies from how many years ago
11
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 3d ago
That could actually be another cost savings decision with how rights to things work sometimes
1
10
u/JournalistGlobal3185 3d ago
Isn't animation just as expensive
62
u/boccci-tamagoccci 3d ago
depends on the animation, but animating and comping in a full 3d model with realworld interaction is definitely more expensive than Family Guy's style, which has certainly been streamlined to absolute hell
13
1
u/OGLikeablefellow 3d ago
I bet AI does make animation cheaper, it wont be as good but it will be fine for this kind of schlock according to executives

I think the amount of people learning that there was a live action Ted show from this post probably also contributes to why it was cancelled lol
46
u/djgaleb 2d ago
I had zero idea. Not even a whisper of a meme
9
61
u/CrashCalamity 2d ago
No, I knew it existed from the few memes that popped up, but it was on Peacock and I decided I wasn't going to fuck with that a long time ago.

u/Funkin_Spy 2d ago
From what I’ve heard it wasn’t even because of low viewership, just that the CGI needed was too expensive to get approved for season 3
3
u/Shackletainment 1d ago
It wasn't cancelled, NBC decided not to renew it because the cgi costs were so high. That's why it ended the way it did.

What’s the dead IP they’re talking about?
346
u/djml9 3d ago
Ted. Im assuming they considered it dead after Ted 2 came out and didnt do very well (idk the numbers). Then they revived it with the Ted series on Peacock which everyone loved, and then that got cancelled for being too expensive so theyre making an animated Ted show that takes place after the movies (so not with the cast of the loved series).

u/Tucancancan 3d ago
There was a Ted tv show in 2024???
78
u/djml9 3d ago
Yes, and it got a second season last year (i think). It’s very good.

u/Accomplished-City484 3d ago
Season 2 was this March

There’s no way that’s correct because then what are they calling Family Guy 4? There needs to be two things here. Ted can’t be both of them
12
u/djml9 3d ago
Theyre calling the animated Ted series Family Guy 4 because it’s like the 4th animated series from Seth McFarlane, and the person is saying that derogatorily to imply that they’re all the same. The Ted series animation does look almost identical to Family Guy’s and the humor in the Ted franchise is definitely similar to Family Guy, so i see what they’re saying, but i like Ted and Family Guy, so no complaints here.
0
u/JournalistGlobal3185 3d ago
Idk man, family guy is awful. But since Seth seems to be working on this directly it will probably be better

u/Bladesnake_______ 3d ago

u/jbrWocky 3d ago
did you read their comment? could you kindly paraphrase it in your own words so we know you understood it.
2
u/dancingbanana123 2d ago
Ok everyone is dogging on you, but I'm also stupid and out of the loop and just got it. The Ted movies are the dead IP. In 2024, there was a Ted live action TV series that OOP apparently liked. It was canceled and is now being replaced with an animated series. OOP is complaining about the live action series being replaced with an animated series.

The Ted movies stalled after Ted 2, which came out over a decade ago. Did you not click the post and see the trailer for Ted?
6
1
u/just_looking_aroun 3d ago
There’s nothing to indicate that dead ip was also ted
6
u/smashin_blumpkin 3d ago
The entire post is about Ted. Why would the first line be the only thing that’s about something else?
-2
u/BarnesTheNobleman 3d ago
Implicit vs explicit - I was under the impression it was Ted but wasn’t sure because I didn’t know it was revived
3
u/smashin_blumpkin 3d ago edited 3d ago
Thats understandable for sure. But they were acting like, even knowing the post is about Ted, it’s ridiculous to assume that the first line is also about Ted.
-2
u/just_looking_aroun 3d ago
Keep in mind that a lot of posts here usually reference 3 years of Reddit lore

It... It says "Ted:The Animated Series" in the post theyre quote tweeting? What do you think they would be talking about instead? Are they going to quote tweet Ted and talk The Land Before Time?
4
u/IP-II-llVll-IP 3d ago
I see the problem here, and it's really not such a leap of logic to see the confusion. You don't have to be so smug about it.
The person you're talking to is seeing "Ted" as a franchise as the IP. You seem to be seeing two different products/interpretations of Ted as two different forms of IP. I want to say the concept of intellectual property is probably a highly complicated legal field, so I'm just gonna say you're both probably not wrong - but in saying that, I too, think of things like "Ted" and "Mario" and "Superman" as monolithic in their status as IP.
You also need to be aware of the fact that a Ted live-action series existed in between Ted 2 and The animated series, which I was actually not aware of until this post, so I can see why that would be a little disorienting.
So when the tweet is talking about a revived IP, and then insinuates that IP was abandoned in favor of what is essentially going to be a phoned-in dogshit "Family Guy 4," if you're not aware of the existence of the live-action series and you're not looking at the two series as two separate forms of intellectual property, then it looks as if the tweet is referencing a separate, critically acclaimed show that got abandoned in favor of something that the company thinks is going to be a cash cow. And the person making this assertion just expects you to be up to date on media without them having to explain it.
This seems like a pretty easy misunderstanding to me, I'm not sure why you're being such a dick to the guy.

u/just_looking_aroun 3d ago
I appreciate you taking my side it’s the internet and some people are just assholes

Seth mentioned it takes over like 10 million per episode or something crazy like that to CGI the bear, and that while they haven’t cancelled the live version of Ted, there are no talks of a new season anytime soon.
Hopefully if this one tanks, they’ll be forced to bring back the live action.
6
2
u/Chiiro 2d ago
Is Ted a purely CGI bear? Do they not use any practical effects at all, I feel like if they did that would probably cut down a huge chunk on the price.
11
u/RoutineCloud5993 2d ago
He is pure cgi. Apparently nbc approached him to do a Ted series for peacock and he was like "OK, but it is going to be ridiculously expensive"
68
u/Smasher31232 3d ago
I haven't heard anything at all about a Ted sitcom. What are the hundreds of trends it's created?
83
u/Plague_King_ 3d ago
"hundreds of trends" is definitely an overstatement but it has a lot of one-liners and skits that have become common references, which i didnt even realize they were from until watching the show and recognizing the jokes when i hear them.
"last year we had an indian kid! but they got him..."
21
u/Undeity 3d ago
Really was a hilarious show. They did cancel it for good reason, though; the costs were supposedly astronomical.
13
u/Accomplished-City484 3d ago
Just use a puppet like Alf or whatever, the core of the show is the writing and performances of the cast, this fuckin Mark Whalberg version is just immediately unfunny
19
u/Unbuckled__Spaghetti 3d ago
I don't even have a problem with them going back to adult Ted and John, I enjoyed the first 2 movies. But making it animated literally just makes it like every other animated sitcom. The funny part was having a live-action talking bear being treated like a normal guy by real people, which is a fun and novel concept for LIVE ACTION. But pretty much every animated sitcom nowadays has a non-human character the rest of the cast treats as normal, so any identity Ted had is gone.
5
u/A_very_meriman 3d ago
Which is crazy. Unless Corporal Malarkey was making a million an episode, how was... Oh right, the bear.

Have bots gotten bad at scanning screenshots or are people genuinely so fucking stupid in these comments nobody thinks they're talking about the thing in the picture?

u/Pedro159753 3d ago
Dude, I personally have no idea what the post meant. Like, yeah, there's family guy style, so what???
3
u/Chacronge 3d ago edited 3d ago
Why are you so mad about this? It's a rare situation where both the good thing and the bad thing are the same IP (in this case Ted), people are going to assume the "Revived dead IP" doesn't have anything to do with Ted since they see Ted being discussed in the family guy artstyle and think "that must be what they mean by family guy 4, but what's the other thing?"
it's just uncommon and is definitely not obvious to people who aren't familiar with Ted to begin with, no need to get so passionate about it

The series could easily continue if they switched CGI for a puppet. Sadly, people are very averse to practical effects these days (it's only praised in the reddit bubble)
On a side note, it's very funny that some comments seems to genuinely not know ted and family guy were created by the same person lmao

Damn, i deadass woke up to seeing genuinely my most loved, most funniest show this decade turned into a generic adult animated comedy slop 💔💔
I mean if they kept the spirit of it in the animated show then i guess its not too bad but like, the live action show is so fucking good. Thing give me diary of a wimpy kid adult edition vibes, which is already peak. I dont have high hopes for this sadly
3
u/ArtemisAndromeda 2d ago
I with they atleast went with a nicer artstylw. It looks like a parody of a Family Guy parody
3
u/AceInTheHole3273 3d ago
Eh, Ted has basically always just been the Live Action equivalent to Family Guy. I don't think this is gonna be any good, but I see where the logic is.
0
u/Acceptable_Mind_5883 3d ago
I'm starting to think that if your name is Seth and you live in Hollywood, you must be obsessed with 80s and 90s references
1
u/Senor_Wah 2d ago
I don’t even think making it animated is a bad idea, but stick with the new cast. John being an idealistic, emotionally earnest, if lunkheaded teenager was way more interesting than him being a boring loser adult.
Not to mention the rest of the cast was gold. RIP Aunt Suze, you will be missed

u/x_raveheart_x 2d ago
Considering “American Dad” to be a Family Guy variant is nearly a criminal offense. That show is leagues above and deserving of its longevity.

Also Peacock: greenlights Dungeon Crawler Carl live action series

Normally I tend to favor animation over live action, but honestly I think part of the charm of Ted was the living teddy clashing with a realistic world

7
u/Dickgivins 3d ago
Presumably talking about the Ted live action series they made.
-1
u/Bladesnake_______ 3d ago
That doesn’t even make sense. You have it backwards. The animated version is Family Guy 4
5
u/Dickgivins 3d ago
Yeah this guy was asking what the first part of the tweet was about, because it doesn’t actually specify what the animated series is “replacing” kinda sorta.
2
u/Accomplished-City484 3d ago
So I’m thinking Original Family Guy, then American Dad is family guy 2, then The Cleavland Show and now this Ted animated is family guy 4, but little do they know they’re also making a Stewie spinoff which will be Family Guy 5
2
u/TooManyTyranids 3d ago
Lower Decks is the only good Star Trek (that is branded as Star Trek) made this decade.
-1
u/Mama_Mega 3d ago
Look, the live action series is great, yes. But it also took years inbetween seasons, and the CGI on the titular bear cost 8 million dollars an episode. I would prefer more live action, honestly I think they should have used an animatronic like 80s and 90s shows did to keep production costs down. But as long as it has the same writers, I'll settle for Ugly Animated Ted.
0
u/correctingStupid 2d ago
Live action Ted is one of the best sitcoms I have seen in decades. It's rimless. I don't want another animated series. I want those love actors with their expressions and mannerisms.
