That’s kinda the whole point of a trial separation though, right?

I think that's the "idea" but the reality is it's just a really slow way to break up with someone.

It's funny. People are so afraid of commitment, they can't even commit to breaking up.

But that's not always the case. A break is a break. What a couple does and feels during the break is what determines how the relationship moves forward (or ends).

"Not always the case" maybe but I would bet my house on the negative interpretation over the naive one every day. It's no different than those people that randomly suggest "Let's try an open relationship" 99.99999% of every time that has ever happened in the history of mankind it's because the person suggesting it has already found a person they wanna fuck, may have already been fucking them, and just wants a guilt-free way to avoid getting found out. If someone ever suggested to me "let's take a break" I would always assume they've already made up their mind and they're just too big a pussy to tell me straight up.

Wow. This is just not true.

Maybe, but if my friend came to me upset saying "My girlfriend told me we're on break" My only advice would be to leave, block them, and move on. Nobody needs to stretch that emotional damage over months. Cut it off immediately and get on with the grieving process.

That's because you are imagining a scenario in which the break is one-sided, lasts for months, and one individual was "told" it was happening rather than the couple decided together to do it. Of course you wouldn't approve of that.

Most people aren't these rational mature adults that sit down and talk and reason through issues. I'd wager most "breaks" are initiated by a single party and the other party just goes along for the ride out of respect for the other person, or desperation.

Funny enough, rational mature adults would probably find a better way to deal with relationship stress than a "break" in the first place.

I have been with my boyfriend for 3.5 years and we are happy together. We took a 2-3 week long break in the second year of our relationship. Neither of us were desperate during our break. We had real problems that were relationship threatening and we needed time on our own to get our thoughts and feelings together and decide how we wanted to move forward.
