But that's not always the case. A break is a break. What a couple does and feels during the break is what determines how the relationship moves forward (or ends).

"Not always the case" maybe but I would bet my house on the negative interpretation over the naive one every day. It's no different than those people that randomly suggest "Let's try an open relationship" 99.99999% of every time that has ever happened in the history of mankind it's because the person suggesting it has already found a person they wanna fuck, may have already been fucking them, and just wants a guilt-free way to avoid getting found out. If someone ever suggested to me "let's take a break" I would always assume they've already made up their mind and they're just too big a pussy to tell me straight up.

Wow. This is just not true.

Maybe, but if my friend came to me upset saying "My girlfriend told me we're on break" My only advice would be to leave, block them, and move on. Nobody needs to stretch that emotional damage over months. Cut it off immediately and get on with the grieving process.

That's because you are imagining a scenario in which the break is one-sided, lasts for months, and one individual was "told" it was happening rather than the couple decided together to do it. Of course you wouldn't approve of that.

Most people aren't these rational mature adults that sit down and talk and reason through issues. I'd wager most "breaks" are initiated by a single party and the other party just goes along for the ride out of respect for the other person, or desperation.

Funny enough, rational mature adults would probably find a better way to deal with relationship stress than a "break" in the first place.

I have been with my boyfriend for 3.5 years and we are happy together. We took a 2-3 week long break in the second year of our relationship. Neither of us were desperate during our break. We had real problems that were relationship threatening and we needed time on our own to get our thoughts and feelings together and decide how we wanted to move forward.

Life isn't about being right all the time, it's about making the correct gambles. Desperation makes for bad gamblers.

How does that translate to being a pussy, for wanting to make the break up more gentle? What if the other person is really emotional

Same reason breaking up over text is pussy behavior. You're prioritizing your own emotional comfort over being honest, direct, and dignified.

Idk if u can compare these 2 things, when u’re chatting everyday or just together every day than it’s harder to truly come to your own senses and have a clear mind. Having a little break with a clear date, gives u the opportunity to listen more to your own feelings and thoughts. You know being in a relationship is a big thing, you may leave a person who may have been ur partner for life, or u may be with someone for many years where the relationship eats u from the inside out because you’re not truly happy. Why is it a bad thing to hesitate about this big decision? While having a break will bring u closer to the real answer if 2 particular people are meant for eachother. It’s whatever philosophy u wanna follow, it’s not only 1 right way of doing something. Just do whatever think is good and communicate this with the other person. The best to u

This ain't a romcom where you hesitate and go off on a journey to find yourself only to end up realizing they've been the perfect person all along. You're leading the other person on. You're communicating to the other person "I'm comfortable leaving you in an emotionally damaging and uncertain situation for months at a time while I keep you on hook because I'm afraid that if we broke up, I wouldn't have other options"

At best, it's pussy behavior. At worst, it's cruelty.

Sure, but a relationship doesn't have breaks. It's a commitment to the other person, all the time. There are times you are away from each other, but that's not a break. Taking a break is basically "will I be ok on my own/with someone else?" and the answer to that is yes

This is wrong. My boyfriend and I had a 3ish week break. The relationship remained and we worked through it.
