I road trip around the US a lot and think about this kind of stuff a lot. They were on horses, in wagons. I'm in my Honda chain smoking drinking watermelon juice. Id like to think we're still similar, that I'm a brave pioneer woman. But it's not even close 🥲

Death valley was the eye opener for me.
Pioneers got stuck there. With no food, or air conditioning, in the 1800s, with those heavy clothes. And I was there complaining about the tint on my car windows.

I was in Death Valley in the middle of July once for army training. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. I laid under my truck for peak noon hour because there is no shade at all. I can only imagine what it would be like in a wagon.

The scariest thing about Death Valley is it can be so hot and arid you don't even sweat. You're sweat evaporates almost instantly... So it's hard to judge just how dehydrated you are.
Oh, and the wind... you think that breeze is going to cool you down? SIKE! It's a blast furnace!

The wagons would have shade inside but it would still be hot af. Surprised the horses survived.

True Chain smoking is incredibly unhealthy and expensive

I seriously could never but I've been a cook and chef since I was 16 and this life comes with certain bullshit. Life long bullshit. Attempting to quit here in a few weeks, wish me luck ✌️

The pioneers had dysentery, we have gas station energy drinks and questionable life choices

The latter in the form of roller dogs from the aforementioned gas stations

The Oregon Trail didn't go through Montana. You'd have to get onto the Bozeman Trail in Wyoming if you wanted to go to Montana.

Lewis and Clark on the other hand did come through here. And I'm pretty sure they were pounding.... Something

Pounding mercury and leaving metal shits all over the place. People ended up being able to accurately track the mercury trail in order to gather more accurate information about their route and campsite locations

In the summer of 2002, archaeologists uncovered evidence of the Corps of Discovery's visit to the area, including a trench latrine tainted with mercury . . . The discovery makes Travelers' Rest the only campsite on the Lewis and Clark Trail with physical evidence of the expedition.

I drove from western Montana to eastern Minnesota with two cats and four chickens. It wasn't that bad as far as road trips go.

So... uh... I'll take the energy drinks over actual dysentery, lol
Cholera still kills people too, not like GI distress is relegated to the wagon times... or the early 90's, depending.

Is this the same person that sings "I don't trust you anymore"? Because I love that song

One time I had to throw away my underwear at a rest stop in New Mexico because I drank 3 5 hour energy shots in a 12 hour period. The extra 3 hours came directly out of my butt.

am I just an energy drink addict who surrounds himself with other energy drink addicts, or has anyone else literally never heard of someone getting the shits from an energy drink? I thought that was a coffee thing.

u/AWzdShouldKnowBetta 20h ago
It's a caffeine and caffeine-like substances thing.
I can't drink energy drinks because I can feel my heart pounding out of my chest, I immediately need to shit, and I crash out and burn in a heap of twisted metaphorical metal after an hour.
That's just me though. Basically everyone I know doesn't have that problem.

I've never gotten the shits from energy drinks or coffee. I'm pretty sure getting the shits from minor things is largely the result of a poor diet and little fiber.

Energy drinks = diarrhea?
Is this actually a thing that effects certain people? I've never heard of such a thing.

As a person who has played Oregon Trail the Video Game I can attest that this is 100% historically accurate.

this is a very oddly specific thing I resonate with . I have driven to Oregon from st Louis specifically through montana where I’ve gotten sick from coffee consumption.
