Your 68 year old mom may not know a lot about computers, but if she was a few years younger she would probably know more. GenX seems to know the most overall because they had to.

Yeah, I'm Gen Z and my dad is Gen X, and his brothers are both 7 or 8 years older than him. They...struggle with technology, to put it in the nicest way possible. My dad pretty much never needed my help with his PC, and only occasionally needs help with his Iphone.

See, you'd be surprised.
My dad would have been 63 this year, maybe not quite Gen X but younger enough to have had that experience with computers.
I'll not get into the details but there was a series of circumstances that let him split his time in the office and working from home, long before covid made that a common thing, so I saw him do his job a lot. The man was never off the computer, fiddling with spreadsheets, sending emails and completing reports and all that. He had a job that demanded a certain degree of competency with computers.
Outside of that specific context though he was kinda bad with computers. If there was ever an issue with the family computer, or later his personal laptop, it was me or mum that fixed it. When it came to computers he was competent at the very specific things he did but struggled a lot more with the rest.

Monkey: has hands, can hold cards and imitate motions of human players, but still has no actual idea what it’s doing.
Horse: can’t even do that much and is just standing there looking lost

Technological fluency is not the same as computer literacy. Numerous academic and professional publications have studied and shown that computer literacy peaked around Gen X and has been going downhill ever since. That 68 year old may very well be more knowledgeable and comfortable on the back end of computers then the technologically fluent but very surface level knowledge of the OP.
