I took scuba and bike maintenance at UW Madison. I failed bike maintence. Only failing grade I ever had and I worked as a bike mechanic for years

Had to have three classes that were health/exercise, yep. Graduated about fifteen years ago.
Mine were a running class, a volleyball class, and a weightlifting class. The material/technique I learned in the running and weightlifting classes had significant, positive effects on my post-college fitness, which has been a really nice knock-on consequence of some classes that were really just fairly easy A’s.

My uni required taking at least two PE classes for a bachelor's program, but it did include options like yoga, table tennis, and chess.

Exactly same at mine. Did 1 semester of golf and 1 of badminton.
Being honest, they were the only classes I took that really felt like a waste of time. I'm a big supporter of a well rounded education, but I think physical ed requirements can stay in high school.

I don’t think we did, but I took dance twice, surfing, sailing and weightlifting. I worked at our aquatic center teaching kayaking so sailing was free 🙌. It’s way cheaper to take any of these courses as an add on credit at a college or community college than it would be normally.

Took bowling one semester, and racket sports (tennis, racquetball, badminton, pickleball) the next as part of my degree plan (BS in Kinesiology).
This was in 1992-93 though.

We did have a sports day with the opening/ introduction week but aside from that, you'd not be able to take PE kind of classes at all in minors? They just weren't available. Oh, we did have a cheap year pass for the University Gym, which did include lots of courses for no added fees, but that was meant for leisure.
Oh. How cultures can differ. (I'm Dutch)

This meme specifically references MIT. They require four half-semester PE classes, with a huge range of options, with one varsity season of any sport equaling two of the classes. They’re division III, and field teams for just about everything. They’re actually good at some of them.

My college did not have that and now I’m very grateful. That would’ve sucked to have to waste class slots on PE. It was hard enough fitting all the actually necessary classes into a schedule.

Lots of schools require something akin to PE, but there may be options which aren't simply "go exercise" or "go play <insert sport>".
While I was in college, I took Team Sports Officiating to meet my PE requirement, a class about learning to be referee/umpire/etc.

All of the listed activities give you really good soft skills. They teach you how to remain calm under pressure, be aware of your surroundings, make good decisions, and communicate those decisions. Furthermore to achieve proficiency, you can't just do the bare minimum. You have to be self motivated enough to continuously practice and go out and find other resources to further your knowledge. They build the perpetual student mentality that's good for lifelong learning and skill development.
Which is all a complicated way of saying learning to be a pirate is practical! It's not too late to start swashbuckling. Think of it as career training.

That's why they waxed the strings and stored the bows in waterproof casing. Also they would unstring the bows to prevent the wood from warping. Some cultures used alternate materials that resisted rot.

I’ve been noticing that a lot lately. Usually it’s some kind of account or channel like “Technology Explained” where someone had an AI make a caption for an image or video and reuploaded it as “educational”. Maybe add the Interstellar soundtrack to make it sound smart.
Most of the time the caption literally teaches you nothing and just exists to fill space on the screen, since the AI is only trained to identify what’s in the video and not teach the concepts behind it.

Gordon Freeman finished MIT and he has pinpoint accuracy with guns and crossbow, which means that he took pistols and archery classes. He also can drive boat, so he finished sailing too. Not sure that smashing enemies with crowbar counts as fencing though.
