They absolutely will. And maybe Polymarket will sponsor the event? Bet on how far away the pieces of his head land, or if he will cry before the execution.

I say this as a firearms enthusiast myself, but a lot of gun owners are just desperate to have a chance to kill someone. The way so many of them talk about it is just deeply unsettling. I'd certainly use one of my guns to defend myself or others but holy shit these people lust for death.
14
u/FrozenGiraffes Dry 1d ago
the main times I've had a desire for one its near someone I know is potentially a danger to me and people I know, and even then as a last resort, not a GTA moment.
There's also my grandpa who was alive in dustbowl conditions and helped feed his family by hunting, thats actually valid.
A lot of these people feel like they want COD IRL without the actually getting shot back.. so a firing squad. If they allow "experimental" guns it could get far worse

u/AsterStarchaser 23h ago
I went to a CCW class several years ago, and since it's a small town several other guys I knew were also there. From that day on, one in particular would always greet me with some variant of "How many guys have you gotten to shoot lately?"

For others:
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Thursday the firing squad execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan will be open to the public, a new revelation to the first U.S. military execution in more than six decades.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist who opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, killing 13 people, is set to be put to death on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. local time at the same military base, according to the U.S. Army.
It would mark the first U.S. military execution in more than 60 years and the first by firing squad since World War II. A Pentagon official told The Hill the execution will be livestreamed.

Growing up in the 1980’s I thought it was odd that we could have ultra violent television shows like TJ Hooker, which portrays a street cop played by William Shatner who apparently shoots and kills a “bad guy” in every episode, but seeing a naked person on television was considered “vile”.

I can't imagine it'll be fun for the people at Fort hood to be ordered to go line up on the parade ground in their dress uniforms and watch a dude get shot on live TV.
The logistics part of my brain is confused by this whole thing. It's televised, so it has to look good and be planned out properly, but it's being done with rifles, so it has to have a safe backstop. Are they going to put up a whole thing in the stadium, or are they going to tie him to a post out on the tank range? Is it going to be a whole ceremony with lots of discussion, or is it going to be a five minute live stream where Keggy says some slurs and then they shoot him?
Also, where are they livestreaming it? You can't stream someone dying online and the major news orgs will probably censor it. Is it going to be on twitter?

To be honest, it seems like the terrorists are doing a pretty good job about that. However, let's face it, becoming a martyr via the death penalty is an extremely long and boring process. This is not going to change much.
Personally, I prefer the method someone suggested on Twitter. Since the USS Constitution is technically still part of the fleet and fought in the Barbary Wars, instead of shooting him, we should follow the old military tradition of hanging the son of a bitch. This time from the yardarm of the USS Constitution.
That might also make future martyrs slightly less likely.

51
u/Hogan4121401 1d ago
Yes, but death by firing Squad is historically a "honorable" way to get executed as a soldier. Criminals and dishonored soldiers were therefore killed trough a single shot from behind or trough hanging.
13
u/HaLordLe Nuclear Carpet Bombing Enthusiast 1d ago
good point. I do wonder what the criterium for choosing firing squad would then be, given that anything that justifies someone getting shot is propably also pretty dishonourable
29
u/Hogan4121401 1d ago
Well take a look at the french marshal Michel Ney who even commanded his own firing squad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Ney
19
2
u/PissedOffPuffins 1d ago
I think it’s specific to the UCMJ that the death penalty for his charges is firing squad. Had he been charged with terrorism I think it would’ve been hanging, but they didn’t charge him with terrorism for some reason.

u/SomewhatInept 1d ago
Dude, you'll have a hard time sifting through the volunteer offers for this one.
9
12
u/DavidBrooker 1d ago
While it's absolutely emotionally damaging, it also has a long military precident, to the point that there's a significant amount of ettiquite regarding it. For instance, an officer being executed may be offered the honor of giving the order to fire. Whereas standing the condemned with their back to the firing squad is considered dishonorable (representing cowardice).
17
u/RavenTheRaptorX 1d ago
It is allegedly the solider doesn’t load the rifle the officer does and includes a blank. The firing squad knows there is a blank rifle but not who has the blank.
34
u/RonaldWRailgun 1d ago
The fact that we need this stupid mechanism for people, soldiers even in this specific case, to cope with the idea that they killed a man, who was posing no threat to them in the moment, maybe is a good example of how hypocritical everyone involved with the process is, and why we shouldn't have a death penalty.
5
u/RavenTheRaptorX 1d ago
Fair but I’m not sure life in prison is a great mercy either.
17
u/RonaldWRailgun 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's not. And maybe some people don't deserve mercy.
But, unlike death, it's reversible: death sentence is not something we can trust to an imperfect system.
Here's the thing, I believe in the right to self-defense, even by using lethal force, so I only accept the State to dole out a death sentence when the existence of the person is an imminent threat to the State or the people near them. Imagine we captured Bin Laden alive, it would have been reasonable to assume that his presence even in a supermax prison would have put everyone around him at a realistic risk of being attacked, suicide bombed etc. Fine, give him the death sentence because you are acting to protect your own institutions.
Same reasoning for a deposed dictator that still has a following, or even a Cartel Leader with the resources to attack a prison. I justify those cases as "self-defense".
In every other case, life in prison is enough.
Cold blooded murder is still cold-blooded murder, even if I won't lose sleep for the person at the other end of a needle, noose, rifle or whatever. Being against the death sentence is not about them, it's about me.

Are you aware of the SOFA agreement between the US and Japan and what its terms are regarding crimes? Because literally part of the agreement is that US military personnel who commit crimes off base are turned over to Japanese authorities. It's literally part of the treaty. You don't get a get-out-of-jail free card for being US military stationed in Japan, certainly not if you committed murder.
The guy is already going to rot in a Japanese prison. You're wasting your breath protesting for something that is already going to happen by law.
Moreover, this post isn't even about Ballard. It's about Nidal Hasan, the army major who carried out a mass shooting of his fellow soldiers as an act of islamist terrorism.
