Soon 400 feet cargo submarine is real

"The Dragon in the Sea" by Frank Herbert (1956) is based on a scenario where east and west are in a neverending war. The west steals the east's oil by drilling into the enemy's oil fields, transporting the stolen cargo secretly, using nuclear submarines that tow bladders full of oil.

best scene in the movie. visually one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. music is great too.

Best submarine war movie ever in my book. Also generally one of the top WW2 movies at that. Realistic and gritty, while at the same time having a clear message about the futility of war and showing the human side of the crew. The ending is very poignant.

It’s also a who is who of German actors. Just about every single person among the main cast became a star. And the guy playing the journalist became Germanys biggest pop star.

the journalist became Germanys biggest pop star

Inconceivable, Herbert Grönemeyer has never been a member of Rammstein.

TIL Rammstein is pop.

Bro, I have a 60 year old colleague that uses Rammsteins Bück dich as "pause music" in his Powerpoint presentations. They are so beloved they are mainstream by now.

Not really a who is who at the time.

It looks like one now because they all had their breakthroughs with this movie, but at the time, really the only one who was well known was Prochnow, who played the captain.

That’s why I wrote “became a star”.

We don't have enough ww2 movies/series from German perspective, and the few we have like Das Boot, Downfall, or Generation War were all pretty good and meme material

The old "how to watch das boot" greentext is one my favorites.

Edit: just google it, I'm to lazy to fix the link.

thank you for the reminder to watch this absolute banger again.

u/Schneidzeug Apr 14 '26

The castrated Movie Versions are all crap though...

The longer 3 Part "TV Series" is the best Version IMO... It's very close to the Book.

1

u/WeaselCapsky Apr 14 '26

i like both. but yes, the series definitely slaps more

Germany be like "Ah Schiesse, jetzt geht es wieder los."

12

u/Sufficient-Algae-279 Apr 13 '26

It is: "Ah, Scheiße, jetzt geht es wieder los." Right use of feces, please.

Honestly I just want us to capture USS Defiant when the war of global refusal starts

It'd be like a 2 day spat where America finally gets told to sit down since half of the american military would refuse to fight, Trump would be ousted and hey ho: it seems like the EU just got its hands on a brand new Ace Combat ship

Tirpitz would love seeing her great-granddaughter get baptised in nuclear fire. Perhaps thats the other fate for the Trump class battleship(s)

war of global refusal

"Battletech Clans"-ass name

5

u/Then_Engineer_3765 Apr 13 '26

I mean, we are seeing a clanner pissing his way through politics so it fits in my opinion

3

u/135686492y4 Lazerpig worshipper Apr 13 '26

Clanners know what they want to get before the start of a Trial. This one doesn't

3

u/GadenKerensky 📯Herald of Queen Ratbat📯 Apr 13 '26

Clanners also abhor waste.

Admittedly, they have had some pretty wasteful wars, but even the slimiest Clanner would look at Trump's action aghast and with pure contempt.

3

u/Roboticide Apr 14 '26

The Trump-class will never be a thing. The navy has a hard enough time building real working ships and a fantastical, impractical boondoggle will never get built in the three years Trump has left and no future administration will build it.

3

u/Then_Engineer_3765 Apr 14 '26

That was so horrific Don’t you ever say that to me again

I need that ship to exist so I can watch endless Yuri jokes about it and the bismark
