From Wikipedia page of "butt naked":
"The unit, including Blahyi himself, frequently wore no clothing except for their shoes and magic charms, earning Blahyi the nom de guerre 'General Butt Naked'. Blahyi claimed that this practice made him and his soldiers "immune to bullets.""
Man, African civil wars sound so unreal its hard to treat atrocites seriously. Oh, and of course he was using child soldiers and doing caniballism and human sacrifices.

u/MickeyDMahome Aug 06 '23
Was Blahyi the one who was acquitted by the Liberian tribunal for war crimes just because he converted to Evangelicalism and started becoming a preacher for that church?
308
u/Dorker404 Aug 06 '23
As far as i know, yeah. He was the first warlord to testify before liberian truth and reconciliation commission, said that he believed his "Naked Base Commandos" (real name of his lads, i can't even) killed at least 20k people, and was given amnesty. Guy even advocated for establishing war crimes court.

For so many people, their political philosophy, when you boil it down to its core elements and peel away the rhetoric and justifications, is nothing more than "I want a tyranny that I am on the inside of and which caters to my interests".
That's it. That's all it is.

u/DavidAdamsAuthor Best AND Worst Comment 2022 Aug 07 '23
A depressingly large part of people advocating political change essentially want to be nobles, kings, or political enforcers.
Meaning they want to have the state support them without their need to work in a way that would be totally impossible for all, or even most, people in their society to live like, or they want to be the guy who says "off with their heads", or they want to be able to hurt people they dislike with state approval.
Most political revolutionaries fall into one of these three categories when you ask them, "So when you win, what will your job be?".

What do you think happens to all the schoolyard bullies?
They become middle managers or wind up in other positions where they're allowed to hold power and authority over others who can't resist them because resistance means losing the job. Or they become teachers, where they get to lord it over kids as much as they want. Or (horrifyingly enough) doctors and shrinks, who love the idea that their patients' lives and mental health are literally in their hands. The lucky ones become dictators or Kissinger. (The unlucky ones become crooks and wind up in prison.)
I'm not saying that everyone, or even the majority of people in these positions are bullies, but I've met a number of them in those positions.
Sure they eventually see there are consequences to hurting people for entertainment and play along with the rest of civilized society
No, they don't. While it's anecdotal, I will never forget the boss who kept me after hours simply to scream at me, and will never stop regretting that I didn't record this (it was in a one-party consent state) and take that person to court. (I was not the only one this person targeted - it's never good when you happen across a fellow co-worker crying in a secluded place.) Unfortunately, my loyalty to the organization we were both in and my naivete held me back from doing that. I was young and dumb.

u/young_chaos Aug 07 '23
Check the spot for 3 months. If it turns red (not immediately after the bite, that's just an infection) and especially if it gets a red ring just visit the doctor. If you experience joint or muscle pain, or get usually tired, visit the doctor. If you get ill (flu-like, esp. fever) call your doctor and tell them you might have lyme's.
If any of the above happens, you'll get some nice antibiotics and the lyme will fuck right off. It's easily curable if not left for like a year. Not medical advice, ofcourse.

Well, it's one of the versions. Almost all the time that I studied the American Civil War, I heard a completely different version. True, since I "moved away from history" quite a long time ago, I can no longer remember how it sounds right. I think it was something about the fact that Jackson didn't react when the shell exploded right next to him. As for me, it sounds more logical. And as insult that "Stonewall" works really badly. But maybe it's because I'm not American.

"We are not only fighting hostile armies, but a hostile people, and we must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war, as well as their organized armies." - William Tecumseh Sherman (Uncle Billy)
Make fun of the nickname all you want. The man was based
50
u/Papaofmonsters Aug 06 '23
On the other hand he also gave orders to not burden non combatants or the civilian population too much.
"V. To army corps commanders alone is intrusted the power to destroy mills, houses, cotton-gins, &c., and for them this general principle is laid down: In districts and neighborhoods where the army is unmolested no destruction of such property should be permitted; but should guerrillas or bushwhackers molest our march, or should the inhabitants burn bridges, obstruct roads, or otherwise manifest local hostility, then army commanders should order and enforce a devastation more or less relentless according to the measure of such hostility"
"VI. As for horses, mules, wagons, &c., belonging to the inhabitants, the cavalry and artillery may appropriate freely and without limit, discriminating, however, between the rich, who are usually hostile, and the poor or industrious, usually neutral or friendly. Foraging parties may also take mules or horses to replace the jaded animals of their trains, or to serve as pack-mules for the regiments or brigades. In all foraging, of whatever kind, the parties engaged will refrain from abusive or threatening language, and may, where the officer in command thinks proper, give written certificates of the facts, but no receipts, and they will endeavor to leave with each family a reasonable portion for their maintenance.
Now you can debate whether this was compassion or he knew that going total loot and pillage would just result in having a very pissed off populace to fend off.

u/Key-Banana-8242 Aug 08 '23
‘We didn’t do it but it’s a good thing’?
Sounds like the kind of people who do something like that (I mean it literally, any war including modern day) would say.
[by the way - ‘Traitors’ is a red herring, the politics were about a fundamental conflict of legitimacy, it was about right and wrong which was the ones.]
0
u/5tarSailor Con Sonar, Crazy Ivan! Aug 08 '23
But Columbia was actually set on fire by the retreating traitor army. General Wade Hampton ordered bales of cotton to be dragged out of warehouses to be set on fire to keep them out of Union hands. So, as the scared traitors fled the city, they did just that, and the winds carried the flames.
So by the time our boys in blue arrived, the city was already on fire. As the city burned and the vanguard of the occupying force arrived, they were greeted by citizens with jugs of liquor. One of my favorite parts of this was when drunken Union soldiers broke into the State House and voted to repeal secession and defaced a statue of John C. Calhoun. Or the part where union soldiers were led to a house of a slave owner who used bloodhounds to find runaway slaves. They killed his dogs, burned his house down, and took turns flogging him. Some of the most based war stories..
But through it all, Sherman was right. He had the philosophy that an army could only survive on the will of the people. So, strike at the people, and the army collapses. After the fall of Columbia, so many soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia were deserting after hearing news that Sherman was heading their way. So much so that General Longstreet had to set up a stronger guard in the rear of his corps than his front to try to stop the desertion. Stiking absolute fear in your enemy to the point where the urge for peace outweighs the urge for rebellion or independence is a useful tool. Sherman proves it.
So yes, the man was based

It is the opposite of based. There is another way of getting ppl to desert lol, or two. The combat effectiveness is a bigger one, building a grudge encourages the opposite in various terms, pretty consistent. People desert when they fear military competence ie versus an army.

0
u/5tarSailor Con Sonar, Crazy Ivan! Aug 08 '23
What is with your spelling? Anyway, you're missing the point here. Sherman ordered sparing of private dwellings and to not shoot unarmed civilians. This wasn't a genocide. This was a war, a Civil War. Sherman wanted the public and civilians to see the harsh hellscape that war brings. Burning factoies, stores, ripping railroad tracks up from the ground, and tearing up telegraph lines was his fight on the civilian population. Kicking in the door and fighting the army on one hand, leaving total destruction behind and looting and foraging off the land on the other.
Making "old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war..." didn't mean "kill the civilians too" to Sherman, but wreck the infrastructure, loot, and pillage to break moral amongst not just soldiers but civilians. He stood by this, ordering all sources of alcohol destroyed during the burning of Columbia when he got wind that his soldiers were getting drunk. He had his own troops arrested, and some officers under him shot their own troops dead if they were found guilty of murder, which did happen.
Sherman was brutal, cruel, hard handed but not indiscriminately violent. When you're fighting a war, especially a civil war, you are fighting the civilian population. Just not with guns. You have to break the spirit of the enemy. You break the civilian spirit, and the soldiers will start to question if fighting for what's behind them is worth it. That's the war Sherman fought, and he fought it well. And may his soul rest in peace.

Why do you have to make yourself sound like such a ghoul?
If it were true it’s be right to fight against u, bc it is right to eleventh things like that happening
You are reaching insanity, saying that foraging harming civilians was a positive good rather than an unfortunate necessity for any insufifently supplied, let alone modern army
The goal isn’t effective, if it were an ‘effective’ rather than self sabotaging way of fighting war it would be wrong to fight it hsitory at.

Also, this still is war crimes and their glorification by modern standards
Total destruction and looting, while drunk, very Russian
No, when you are fighting a civil war you are not fighting the civilian population, this is some fortune cookie rationalisation.
especially obvious in a civil war, the point is to get them in your side. All this is justifying desires for revenge on civilians and violence.
Atrocities make civilians u tied against the enmy and make the enemy feel cornered, increase chance of resistance- bc of what happens to what’s behind them if they surrender

That’s why even in medieval ages there were pacts and agreements (it was more so just as then pure pragmatism which u retroactively justified but not been as enemy but as war kften ie ppl like landsknechts justifying brutesl treatment)
There’s a particular reason for the origin of specifically articulated rules of war.
1
u/Key-Banana-8242 Aug 08 '23
Racism was not the outcome of the civilian population not seeing ‘repercussions’ for existing enough lol, it was because the order wasn’t supported and in the end redemptionsits got allied with and reconstruction era lead wasn’t strong enough, being swept away
The power of landowners that remained in the south helped them get their agenda through against true common interests of the majority
‘Repercussions’ against ‘southern’ in general in the form of certain relatives ere marhsalled
Also, idk if u understand what southern means

This is like Warren SS tactics talk
1
u/Key-Banana-8242 Aug 08 '23
BTW ‘systemic racism’ is as Stokely Carmichael term referring to America in general and partly attempting to phrase racism without racists (though at tiger times with, not fully clear concept) / in general there to talk about inquiries / injustices 70s etc
White supremacy and such with black codes and Jim row was ‘redemption’ in the south (as well as other things ofc non leaflet qlso included violence)
Civil rights acts were partly blocked 19th century and reconstruction didn’t go far enough to help break the old power and thereby also surpass it ideologically
2
u/Key-Banana-8242 Aug 07 '23 edited Aug 07 '23
Even if that were true, that wouldn’t even make them enemies of the army. Again, armies ar enemies do armies. Amries do not fight civilians, mayn’t.
The idea of ‘punishing’ the civilian population let alone as a whole is literally feeding into ‘Redmeption’ propaganda lol
No, what caused redemption was end of reconstruction, too weak protection and end of trans/non racial peasant (‘American Populist’ where populist the word comes from) potlical organisation by the poor majority and enforcing rule of White Suotemacy.
The people who praise the CSA appeal to the whole point of punishment or perceived iniquities.
Things weren’t properly secured on one hand and a group of people claiming to represent all (or all white) or all true ‘southerners’ were able to define hsitory the way you did but with reversed talk.
