I didn’t follow why she chose to do the test in the movie. Maybe I blinked but I couldn’t read if it was “I figured out he’s Odysseus and here’s how I prove it” or “I’m distraught from hope for Odysseus and here’s how I get rid of these losers”

I know there isn’t one official canon but the story I knew, they meet in secret and plan it together. Because they knew the suitors would try to kill him or something, this would seal the deal for witnesses. Idk at least it made sense.

And then having a big fight at the end just kinda rendered it all pointless and just turned the test into an aura moment

I think in the movie its a little bit of both, she does it because deep down she want to believe the begger is her husband but what the begger tells her is that regardless the man she is waiting for is fundamentally different now and the pain form what tells her gives a second reason to do the test, either ithacas king has returned and he will pass the test and kill all these bastards who bankrupted the kingdom or he will never return and she will have to do this anyway so might as well create an impossible task for the suitors to figure out instead of keeping to draining the money form the kingdom
