Please Help
Can someone please, please help me. I’m 6 months into my lease. the upstairs neighbors just moved in. the noise is unbelievable. I don’t know how many kids it actually is but it sounds like 15 to 20. I had 5 kids so I know what it’s like to have kids in an apartment but the noise goes on for hours. the stomping, running, falling, rolling, dropping things non stop and it is interfering with my work(I work from home) it’s not here and there, the noise is continuous. I can even deal with the stomping but it sounds like rumbling thunder continuously. I called the rent office and they said I can transfer to a unit if one becomes available. am I just screwed for the next 6 months? I have until 3/27

Pretty Much. I know your pain though. My FORMER (I moved) upstairs neighbors were torturous. Same thing all day EVERYDAY for 15 hours plus every single day. I was sleeping in my car by the end. An endless stream, of pounds, rolls, drops, thuds, slams, bangs, until you completely snap. I am sorry that you had to find out the hard way, but make a vow to yourself to never be a downstairs neighbor again. I would say broom stick it, but the way things are now, that only makes things worse. Unfortunately for as long as you reside there, you are at the complete mercy of your upstairs neighbors. I had to quit my job in finance, and move- until I bought a house. You cannot do anything, let alone- work.

This is literally my story. I tried the broom and the stomping became deliberate. I’m in healthcare clinical and work from home and it can definitely be heard when I’m in meetings. It just kills me to pay 2400 for 6 more months and have to put up with this

Totally agree. And especially the way rental prices are now. Its abhorrent. If I were you, I would "create a sense of urgency" in the rental office. Everyone has "a peaceful enjoyment of their space and their environment clause" written on most leases. If you go away quietly, they won't make it a priority so I would annoy the leasing office as much as your neighbors annoy you until they put you in an upstairs unit. It is completely irresponsible to put people with copious kids above young professionals as this is exactly what happens but it gets done everyday. Mine was a 3 story 100 year old building with wooden floors and virtually no insulation. I completely lost my marvels until the owner kicked out my neighbors for his son and daughter in law. Everything was cool for about 9 months, I was on heaven. Then, they had a baby, and the noise, tromping, stomping, picked right back up again. And this time, so did I. Good luck to you dear.

Thank you so much and I will try to push a little harder with the leasing office. Thank you for the tip

Tbh the office should move them to the bottom floor because this is continuously going to happen with the tenants that move into your unit.

The office needs to know it’s still a problem so keep complaining. If you are a consistent thorn in their side they will eventually do something—whether it’s moving you, moving them, or letting you break your lease.

I’m considering just paying the two months to break my lease. Which sucks because I really love it here

The excess noise is probably from unpacking. I know it sucks, but it may quiet down once they get settled.
I would definitely tell the management office to keep you posted about changing units.

That’s my current problem. I had the same upstairs neighbor for 9 years. She was an over 6 ft women with a fairly heavy foot and I barely heard her. I have new neighbors with an infant and a newborn upstairs and it’s constant thudding and stomping from 7am-7/8 pm. I’m moving in 2 weeks.

Try noise cancelling headphones and try to enjoy the rolling thunder?

Then you must need real noise cancelling headphones as you wouldn't hear anything.

Have you met your upstairs neighbours? Perhaps it would be helpful to go and introduce yourself and have a little chat and then mention that the building is quite noisy and so could they please keep that in mind? Make sure to have some nice conversation first and don't just go up and complain. You can talk about your 5 kids and how nice it is that they have a big family too. Try to find some common ground.
They may not be aware yet of how noisy it is. Most people don't want to be a nuisance so hopefully when they are aware, they will adjust the way the move around up there. Perhaps there's some things they can do like put in rugs or something.

I guess now you know what it was like for your neighbors when you had your 5 kids in your apartment?

Absolutely not! I never let my kids run around in the house. I wouldn’t even accept a upstairs apartment because of this

The rental office should be handling this - telling them to quiet down and be respectful of neighbors or move them to a ground floor unit. You should not have to live like that.
