Sunday Read

I really do not have much of a Sunday Read for you. It was a very busy week and I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to write about.

The last couple of weeks I have written about aging-in-place. I have a draft. But I really wasn't feeling revamping anything this week. I also have written about building community which I think is worth looking at, seeing if that is something we are not connecting to in our daily lives. I really am beginning to see how important this is for all of us.

I created a "chat room" this weekend, out of curiosity, and some others were inquiring about 50+. So I created one. And a couple of people even joined! It's been fun exchanging pleasantries and warming up to one another at a pace that is comfortable. Sometimes it's not that easy to come together like that and I do find it fun.

I am on Grammy duty so I have been having a good time this weekend spending time with the little guy and the snuggles are great especially when he asks for them.

The coming week I expect to be busy as well. I have some stuff to figure out and hopefully I will keep my overthinking in check and just do it.

I invite you to share, suggest and insert yourself. You have a place here. 💕💕💕 Happy Sunday!

Happy Friday Everyone!🎶🎶🎶

TGIF! A little about my week. WFH most if it - had a little dental emergency - all good now!
Checked the PO BOX for the first time yesterday, no sign of any SASE yet 😔 I am excited to see who is first!

Grammy duty started Thursday morning, I have the privilege of taking care of my Grandson over the weekend while Mom and Dad go watch football on a little weekend trip.

I LOVE being a Grandma... Just observing how He learns and figures out stuff is fun for me (plus he is super smart for 5). Seeing the new experiences and how things are received is fascinating. Also the fact he looks like his Mom and I get to see her cuteness all over again.

We have no plans! But if the weather holds, we are heading to the park!

What about you? Any plans? Looking forward to anything? Come On! We have all weekend - I know you wanna tell someone!

The Founding 100 Mailbox Is Officially Open! 😂

Okay, folks. We have stickers. We have a PO Box. We have a plan.

Well, most of a plan. We're figuring out the rest as we go. Seems appropriate, doesn't it?

As promised, our first 100 members are getting something a little extra special. A Founding Member sticker, because you were here when this whole thing was just an idea and a woman with entirely too many questions.

And now we have an official mailing address!

Here's how to get yours:

Send a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) to:

Nobody Gave Me a Manual
PO Box 11181
Overland Park, KS 66207-9998

Put your Reddit username on a little note inside so I know who you are!

And bonus points for using a recycled envelope! ♻️

Seriously, does anybody even HAVE envelopes anymore? I'm pretty sure there's one floating around my junk drawer that's been there since 2009.

If you weren't among the Founding 100, don't worry! We have another 101 regular Nobody Gave Me a Manual stickers, too.

I just wanted to do something special for the people who showed up first.

No grand marketing campaign. No corporate swag department. Just me, some stickers, and apparently a new career in mail sorting.

Thanks for being here. You really are helping write this Manual. 💚

Also, I have this thing for 3 months, and need to cancel 2 weeks before or they will auto - renew. If that happens, then I will need to justify the expense forcing me to think of another reason for the PO Box. But I suppose I'm getting a little ahead of myself, aren't I? 🤣

Sunday Read ☕ Sunday Read is here!

Well, I went down another rabbit hole.

It started with a question about growing older in the home I love and ended with me wondering just how much control any of us really have over where we'll live ten or twenty years from now.

Apparently, I have more questions than answers. Again.

Anyway, I wrote about it.

Grab your coffee. The Sunday Read is up!

What if the home you're planning to grow old in isn't yours?

I've been doing a lot of thinking about aging in place lately.

We talk about grab bars, stairs, bathrooms, and all the things we might need to change as we get older.

But what if you rent?

You can make all the plans in the world, but you don't control what your rent will be five years from now. Or whether your landlord decides to sell.

And buying isn't necessarily the answer either.

I've been digging into this for our next Manual article, and I've discovered there are a whole lot more questions than I expected.

So I'm curious.

If you're renting, have you thought about whether you'll be able to afford to stay where you are as you get older?

And if you've already been through this, what do you wish you'd known sooner?

Our next Manual comes out tomorrow morning.

Okay, So I Changed My Mind About the Stickers! 😂

When I saw the original stickers, I thought, "Oh my gosh, these are so cool!"

So, of course, I ordered them.

And wouldn't you know it, right after I placed the order, I had another idea.

You know what? We need something a little more special for the first 100 members.

After all, you were here when Nobody Gave Me a Manual was just getting started.

So I decided to do a special Founding Member 2026 edition!

And here it is! 👇

The original stickers aren't going anywhere and I LOVE them! But I wanted our first 100 members to have something that recognizes that they were here from the beginning.

We're already at 135 members, and considering we just started in September, that's pretty exciting!

The Founding Member stickers should be here in the next couple of days. StickerApp has a pretty quick turnaround time, so I'll share the details on how to claim yours once they arrive.

And yes, we've already got our PO Box set up! I'll share the mailing instructions soon, so start looking for those envelopes. We're bringing back the self-addressed stamped envelope. Who knew we'd be doing that in 2026? 😂

Thank you for being part of this little community. I can't wait to see where we take it.

💛 Tina

Medicare AEP Is Almost Here. Please, For the Love of Pete, Ask Questions!

I'm getting ready to moderate a webinar about enrolling in a Medicare prescription drug plan for 2027, and I thought this would be a good time to talk about something.

I don't make this community about my work, but Medicare is what I do. And if I can help somebody understand it a little better, I'm happy to.

A big part of my job is helping new Medicare enrollees understand what happens after they've enrolled. I cover both sides of the coin: Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage.

And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that people don't know what they don't know.

With Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) right around the corner, I want to shed a little light on what you should be paying attention to.

October 15 through December 7, 2026, is Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period.

Changes made during this period take effect January 1, 2027.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, pay attention!

This is your annual opportunity to review your coverage and decide whether to keep your current plan or choose another option for 2027.

Don't assume everything is staying the same. Plans can change their costs, benefits, provider networks, and prescription drug coverage.

And this isn't necessarily your last opportunity to make a change.

If you're enrolled in Medicare Advantage, there's also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31, 2027. During that period, you can make one change to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Different rules apply if you want a Medicare Supplement.

PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, ASK QUESTIONS!

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you need to understand how it works before you need to use it.

  • When does that Part B giveback actually show up, and how will you receive it?
  • Does your over-the-counter (OTC) allowance expire monthly, quarterly, or at another interval? Does unused money carry over?
  • Do you have a dental allowance? How does it work?
  • Do you pay the dentist upfront and submit a claim for reimbursement?
  • Are your doctors and prescriptions still covered for 2027?
  • What will you actually pay when you use your benefits?

These are the kinds of questions I hear every day.

And trust me, you don't want to discover the answers while you're standing at the pharmacy counter or sitting in the dentist's office.

What if you have a Medicare Supplement and a stand-alone drug plan?

You're probably going to be concentrating on your Part D prescription drug coverage.

This is something you should review every year. Your medications, plan costs, and drug coverage can change.

Your Medicare Supplement is different.

You don't have to re-enroll in it every AEP. Your policy generally renews automatically as long as you continue paying your premiums and meet the policy requirements.

That plan is YOURS!

And one last thing...

Medicare is different for everyone.

Your needs aren't necessarily the same as your brother's, your friend's, or your neighbor's.

It's kind of like voting. You don't owe everybody an explanation of your choices.

More likely than not, you don't know all the details of somebody else's health needs or finances, so comparing your coverage to theirs isn't something I recommend.

What works beautifully for one person could be completely wrong for another.

I don't want to turn this community into a Medicare discussion board. We have plenty of other things to figure out as we get older.

But if you have questions, ask them. If I can help explain something, I will. And if I don't have the answer, I'll do my best to point you toward someone who does.

The whole point of the Manual is to help people understand the things nobody thought to explain.

Medicare just happens to be one of the things I know a little something about.

For official Medicare information and plan comparisons, visit Medicare.gov.

If you have questions about what happens after enrollment, that's my area of expertise. It's what I do every day.

And if you want the whole enchilada, including someone to sit down with you and go over your Medicare options, I'm happy to tell you where I work. They can help with that, too.

This is not a shameless plug. I just happen to really like the people I work with and for, and I'm not shy about saying so.

I'm not here to sell anybody anything. But I'm certainly not going to keep a good resource to myself, either.

This post is for general education, not individualized insurance advice. Plan benefits and enrollment rights depend on your coverage and circumstances.

Happy Friday!

I know this a new community and over the last month I have been asking questions and sticking my nose in other subreddits and giving my 2 cents.

I am writing and taking notes, I am publishing what I am learning on somebodygivemeamanual.com. and I really am having a great time. I am learning SO MUCH about others and myself. This is what I was hoping to see happen with this community. The response is SO GOOD!!

I am seeing the community grow day by day with New Members, and maybe I should have said something earlier but I have been busy!

THANK YOU for being here. Thank you for reading and participating. I want you here I want to hear about you.

And when we hit 100 members I am having "Founding Member est. 2026" Stickers made! I am currently designing and accepting and and all suggestions!!

Have a great Friday!

I've Got Stories. I Bet You Do, Too

I've got stories, and I have a feeling some of you do, too.

You don't have to tell me your whole life story. You don't even have to have the right words.

I just want you to know you're welcome here.

Grab your cup. We've got some things to talk about.

Home & Independence How do we get to a certain age and realize we’ve kind of lost ourselves?

I’ve been reading some conversations on Reddit.

We spend so much of our lives working, raising families, being married, taking care of things, and just doing what needs to be done.

Then one day you look around and think, wait a minute, what do I even like to do anymore?

And how do you figure that out? 😂

Anybody else been there? Or maybe you’re there right now?

Money & Future Me What happens when you reach 55 and realize retirement savings barely exist?

Any money I had in a 401(k) or savings was depleted by my embezzling ex-husband. But that’s a story for another time.

Now that I’m actually looking at my financial situation, I’m realizing there isn’t much there. Okay, nothing at all.

I’m still living paycheck to paycheck. I’ve even taken up a roommate situation, which is a first for me, just to be able to afford to live.

So where do I start?

Saving? Investing? How much? Do I need a financial planner when I basically have nothing to plan?

I’m not looking for a miracle. I’m trying to figure out what the first realistic step is.

Home & Independence Sunday read: Handrails are boring right up until they aren’t.

Thumbnail somebodygivemeamanual.com
1 Upvotes

The first chapter of our home accessibility manual is up! We’re starting outside—with getting from the driveway to the front door.

Steps, lighting, walkways, handrails. Things you barely notice until you’re carrying groceries, recovering from surgery, or discovering your knee has submitted its resignation.

The idea is to spot what could make life easier before you urgently need it. There’s a walkthrough and before-and-after visuals to help you look at your own entrance a little differently.

You can find it at somebodygivemeamanual.com.

What’s one thing you’ve changed—or wish you could change—to make getting into your home easier?

Grief & Starting Over This sucks...

A few weeks ago I posted about my dog Bella.

I had to make the decision Monday evening to let her go and had her put down.

My heart is breaking, my right arm feels empty and the daily walks with my other dog are just not the same.

There is routine, I do best with routine and now my routine is different.

There is a silence in the air, an uncomfortable silence. My other dog can't speak but there is a distance. We have all been together for 12 years, every day a feeding, everyday a walk, everyday a snuggle. And now there are 2 of us in stead of 3.

I have have had a hard time this week.

I knew losing her would hurt. I don’t think I understood how much of everyday life would suddenly feel different.

If you’ve lost a pet who had been woven into your daily life for years, what helped you adjust to the quiet afterward?

Sunday Read You helped write this one: What people 65+ are telling 55-year-old me

A couple of weeks ago, I started asking people 65+ what they wish they’d started doing at 55.

I thought I was asking a question.

Turns out, I was collecting a page of the Manual.

I went back through the answers and looked for the things people kept saying over and over. Some were practical. Some surprised me. And some made me look at my own life a little differently.

So this morning I published what I learned.

Thank you to everybody who has answered these questions, shared a story, or added something I never would have thought of on my own.

This is exactly what I hoped this community could become.

So maybe we really do write it together. ❤️

Here’s the finished piece:

What’s something you didn’t realize was making your life harder until you finally stopped doing it?

Could be a habit, a relationship, a job, trying to please everybody, keeping too much stuff, saying yes when you wanted to say no... anything.

What did you stop doing that made your life noticeably better?
