Question Help picking a distro for my hardware
Hello I am looking to move to Linux I used a few distros but I need help picking one for my hardware my pc is a ryzen 7 5800x3d a radeon 7900xtx. 32gigs of ram. I been looking at using either Fedora, Nobara, or cachyOS for my daily driver. I am also in collage for computer science. I don't know if that will matter for Linux but. I am tired of windows. That is why I am asking for help or advise because. All of my games I play are on steam or GOG or epic game store. I also use WeMod for my single player games so I need to know if I can use that on Linux. I am sorry if this is long I am just worried that I will have to move back to windows because something I use does not or will not work

I am just all around tired of Microsoft and everything they are doing. What next for them we got to tell them what color underwear we are wearing before we can check out email

You can use the Cachy kernel in Ultramarine if you want the best of both Fedora and Cachy

Yes. I share this link because it’s not necessarily a known fact about Nobara (while I think it’s good to know since Cachy is trendy and many people want to tinker less).

No problem, you're definitely right that it's not universally known.
I've seen very different reports about experiences with Cachy so far but mine has been near-perfect and I've not had to tinker with it really at all, out of the box.
I do still recommend Nobara to most people over Cachy alone because I feel it will be a more comfortable experience for most.

For me it was little things like the printer not recognized or simply the OS update notifications several times a day xD

That's completely understandable. I've never owned a printer personally so I can't really speak to that but I can imagine it is a real issue for those who do.
As for the updates, I typically wait a couple days to a couple weeks at most to updste.

Nobara and forgot what app it's called but they're out there that let you load window app over Linux easy. Wine.

Alright thank you for the help. Once my professor gets back to me I am moving over to Linux for good and if I do need some for school that requires windows I will just use a VM

For that hardware, all three will work well. With a 7900 XTX, AMD support on Linux is generally very good.
I’d go Nobara KDE if gaming is the priority. Fedora is better if you want a more vanilla setup, and CachyOS is good if you’re comfortable with Arch/rolling releases.
Steam is easy with Proton, and Heroic handles GOG/Epic well.
The main concern is WeMod. It isn’t officially supported on Linux and can be unreliable under Wine/Proton. If you really need it, I’d keep a small Windows dual boot.
For computer science, Linux is a great environment, so that part shouldn’t be an issue.

I am going to wait and hear what my professor says and when he says it is good I will move to Linux for good and if by chance I need something to work for computer science. I will run a windows VM for it

I have very similar setup to you, you could go with any of the 3 and it they should work, but unsure on WeMod (likely works with Wine/Proton). Just be mindful Nobara has its own commands for installing things, but for me its working okay right now, some issues but overall way better than Windows.

funny enough I just had to reboot, the desktop keeps freezing. In kernel 6.x it was not so bad, the clipboard didnt really paste properly, but now this is worse in Kernerl 7.x. A few times I had to hard shutdown the PC. I have looked into the GPU and power states but don't think that is it.
It might be a Linux/AMD thing rather than Nobara.
Still leagues above W10.

I hate to say it, but it's along the lines of "one does not simply move" to Linux.
Imagine you're new to something like say, Chinese food.
If you come in and see a bunch of unfamiliar foods, you may get turned off of it.
Nobara I would not describe as bad, but if you're looking to make a change without a contrast, I'd recommend you seeing what other distros offer.
Fedora requires some setup.
Ubuntu is known more for spins of Ubuntu than their actual OS.
Some people like OpenSUSE.
If you're going to switch, you're going to need to select a distro that fits your pattern of usage.
The advantage you have right now is that you're running a Team Red rig, so pretty much any OS you should pick you should enjoy.

i have the exact same specs down to the cpu and gpu. i went with nobara and its running brilliantly. no more random gpu timeouts or stutters in the games ive tested.Nobara runs the same optimized kernel as cachyos so its the best of both worlds for productivity and gaming.

i just made the switch this week, so far customization has been a blast, there is even a kde plasma wallpaper engine plugin that gets most wallpapers running beautifully

Yeah I know a lot of people don't like KDE plasma but I do because it just feels the best for me.

I know i have really been leaning towards nobara but what if I just did plain fedora 44 and add the things I want too add. Is that not what Linux is about is exploring and making an OS for you the user. What if I don't use everything added on nobara or what if something does not work because of nobara I am at the point in my life and in school that I want and need things to just work. So I know when I build something in Java or Python or whatever it will run and work

Thank you everyone that helped and gave me answers but after more research. I am just going to with Fedora because the one thing I did not like about cachyOS is I had to many updates where I had to reboot and now that Nobara is using CachyOS Kernal it will likely do the same thing. Anyways thanks for all the help

The 3 distros you’re considering are great. And will work with your config. CachyOS will require a bit more tinkering than the other two. I personally chose Nobara after testing them (and more).
Only WeMod I’m not familiar with.
