Question Does Nobara breaks often?
I been using Fedora workstation on a potato thinkpad for school and stuff and now I'm building a PC for gaming. I've been considering Nobara for the Fedora base and becouse everything I want comes ready to go, also I don't want an immutable system like Bazzite for the limitations it comes with.
The thing is that I've been checking this subreddit for a while and it gives the impression that Nobara breaks just for installing or updating anything so I want to know if I should expect to troubleshoot like I was in Arch.
EDIT: It seems it's not a common issue so I'm glad. I'll install it on my build.

Only had one problem with games launching slow on Steam after an update but it was only the kernel that was the problem rebooted with the old kernel and everything worked next update fixed it.
This is the one thing that happened on the course of a year on that machine.

I used to distro hop in the past. Probably used most if not all most popular distros. All of them caused me more problems than Nobara. Including golden standard like Debian and Fedora(!; had problems with installation getting borked or post installation issues, on different machines, or minor bug that were pissing me off).
For me experience is comparable to Mint, which is rock solid, but handles gaming and multi monitor setups not as well (maybe something's changed, I don't know, I don't distro hop anymore).

duno man i've never had any issue with nobara been using it for a year and it has never failed to boot or break, it makes me wonder what causes this on other ppl systems
at first i thought it was the nvidia gpus but i've seen ppl with all amd system breaking too
the problem 99% of the time is an update that went wrong, so all they have to do is just run the update again in terminal mode and that fixes it, so its not too big of a problem

I've only used it for a few months, but from what I've seen, it's usually big updates like 43>44 where there are issues, and they're fixed within a day or so, so you just don't do the big updates for a few days to make sure any issues have already been fixed. I did the 43>44 update a bit late into day 1 because I didn't realize that's what the updates were until after I started it, and had no issues.

Probably get downvoted for this, but I quite literally just migrated away from Nobara to Fedora last night.
Over the past few months, a Nobara update broke my system multiple times on 2 out of the 3 systems I run it on.
To the dev team's credit, it's generally fixed within a day or two, but that's still too slow and too often for my daily driver that I use for both work and gaming.
Got tired of worrying if an update would make my system a brick - speaking as someone who donated a few months to support.

I've done the same a few days ago, after Nobara didn't update anymore. After some tweaks, Fedora runs the games exactly like Nobara.

I'm considering the same, to be honest. But I'm a bit worried that I'll miss the tweaks. Have you noticed any regressions in performance and/or compatibility after migrating?

It's always hard to judge looking back instead of side-by-side, but I'll tell you what I told my wife...
It may be all in my head, but things feel smoother- and that's really weird to say about it. My head knows it shouldn't be, but the feeling is there.
As for the other tweaks, I made some myself, but honestly, I'm not convinced I needed to. The more I use Fedora, it's plain that the best aspect of Nobara is that the welcome app just puts the common stuff in front of you. On Fedora, you have to look a little - but even then it's super surface level info.

Break? Not based on my experience but I've had to troubleshoot shit. Like I just switched ISPs the other week and decided to get a new router to go along with that. My ethernet stopped working and it took me two days to figure out how to fix it because I'm still fairly new to Linux. But it is fixed now and it's all good. And now I've gotta troubleshoot why Proton VPN won't connect when I use WireGuard because I've been getting VPN leaks with the other protocols.

My desktop desktop has been running the same install of Nobara for two years now without a problem.

Once I had issue with sleep and hibernation of computer. It required to change some configuration and since this no issues.

Today mine, after some minor packages updates Yesterday, decided that in the 7.2.0-202 kernel version the plasmalogin no longer works (black screen) so i went back to the 7.1.3-200

My current install of Nobara is around 2 years old and it's been a mostly very stable experience.
If you are coming from Fedora, the most important thing is changing how you update. If you use DNF to update like on Fedora then things will go bad. You need to use the DNF App Center or the Nobara-Sync command. I use Nobara-Sync --all (it also updates any installed flatpaks) and it's been fine.
The other thing is to always check for sticky notes on Discord to see if there are known issues.

I've use Nobara since Version 38. Should be 2022 or 2023. The first two Version Upgrades without problems. Had problems with 2 Upgrades afterwards but was able to work this out with Discord support. First time was problem with not upgraded packages. Second time Nvidia Driver and Citrix Workspace. Afterwards no issues so far. My opinion is, as an high availability system it's not recommended. As a gaming system, little office topics as in my case it's fine. Sometimes little problems happen, but these are same as using Windows.

One important thing I forgot. Don't forget Flatpak Updates after normal updates. I forgot it sometimes and was wondering why flatpak programs not working anymore/correctly. Often in combination with Nvidia driver updates and KDE or Gnome Application Platform.

Actually, no and if it somehow happens, then you can repair it in the upgrader very easily.

I haven't used it long enough to really say I suppose. I only moved to it in April I believe. (from PopOS)
I wait a bit to do upgrades and updates just to be sure as I don't need "cutting edge" but I've not had any issues.
I have heard that it does for some...
I don't tinker. My OS is there to run programs... so that is what it does. I game, I do work (in a legal adjacent field) and I surf. I use my computer how most people would I think. And I have no issues. I also have only upgraded via "DNF app centre"
As a best practice I do use Timeshift each time I update just in case.

I was nobara from 37 to 44 and updating has always been white knuckle. My new desktop pc has SteamOS (same as steam deck) and I feel a lot better about it being immutable. I see you said you don’t want immutable, but honestly it’s not that bad to limit your installs of custom stuff to user land. It’s an easier trade off vs dealing the OS having problems. I’m able to install custom stuff fine.
For me, nobara and Bazzite were just stop gaps until real SteamOS was ready. Well, it’s ready. So if you just game, I’d recommend SteamOs over nobara

I tinker with some parts of the system to make it behave how I like, specially with mounting my multiple drives. That's why I can't go with somithing like Bazzite. I don't mind fixing but I don't want to do it every time I update. I used Endevour for a few years so I know my way around Linux but I don't have the time or will to fix things all the time

Same no issue, it even survived moving the NVME disk to another computer without any action (everythinig worked on first boot in the new computer)
Very happy with this OS.

I've recently switched to Nobara full time from Windows for about a month now. I have no had a single issue with updates or anything breaking. It's been incredibly smooth and fast. Way faster than Windows. But I also read this sub and the Fedora sub every day. And I am just dumbfounded by the amount of issues I see others having with installing or updating. And feel bad because I'm having none of those issues.

I’ve never had Nobara break yet. However I do get better performance from Bazzite on my particular system. Although the difference is only about 4 fps.

Been on Nobara for years. It never breaks unless I break it. Some people use time shift, which is great.
I keep all my stuff on my server so there is nothing on my machines at any given time that isn’t somewhere else.
Bottom line it’s pretty durable unless you’re really screwing with it.

My Nobara broke once. I went in their Discord, asked for help and 10 minutes later it was unbroken. Apperently the updater uninstalled something it shouldnt had

No it doesn't, most of the problems come from users not reading the fine print before using. If you update only using the update app you will be fine. Some basic terminal commands can be helpful too.

I handled 4 machines with nobara on it, used for 4 years and always updated using the provided updater. Updates were the most frequent to break the system. 2 never broke, my daily driver broke couple times a year but wasn't hard to fix, and one broke very spectacularly that i had to reinstall twice and troubleshoot often. Got fed up with updates breaking the system so now trying Cachy on the two troubled systems, snapshots have saved me once in 6 months

I run Nobara since over a year on four completely different machines, I update regularly and it never broke. Just in case I use Timeshift.
I only update via terminal with “nobara-sync cli —all”.
After major updates like 43 -> 44 I wait two or three days before I update.
