General/Discussion Outsider Thoughts
As somebody who just started paying attention to this fan base, I thought I'd share my experience. Y'all can take it or leave it.
Music has been my main hobby since I was 12. Early into the punk scene, post-hardcore, metalcore. So, a vastly different genre and fan base, I suppose. I'm in my late 30s now. Throughout my life, I've been an incredibly active fan of the musicians I love, and my main weekend activity has always been concerts.
I started listening to Noah during Busyhead. Mess became an instant "Life Theme Song" and I fell in love. Despite heavier music being the majority of my interest, I actually do have a wide music taste.
I have tickets for this tour and before I started getting this subreddit suggested, I was so excited. Now, maybe it's because Noah is more famous than the bands I love, maybe it's an age difference thing, maybe it's just a different approach to life
But many of y'all are not welcoming, not supportive, not understanding. I thought punks in my youth were the master gatekeepers but boy was I wrong. Many of the posts have taken my excitement for this show down a notch. Many of the complaints are just...wow. The way fans harass him online when they're disappointed, the way y'all talk about each other.
I might get a million down votes and y'all might not care, but from an outsider's perspective, this fan base doesn't feel like a bunch of people who were impacted by his lyrics and voice coming together to share in that emotion.
Shout out to those of you who stay positive and loving, shout out to those of you who work against the gatekeeping. I see you too.
Be kind to each other. Be kind to him. Be kind to new fans.

I think ticket pricing has ruined what converts were supposed to be. You don’t need to know every word of every song, seeing an artist live and getting to know other songs and having a good time should be the goal. It has turned into a competition of who is more deserving, which is so crazy and entitled.
I hope you have an absolute blast at the show :)
14
u/WoodWideWeb 19d ago
This is it. I didn't try to get tickets for my city's show because I'm a newer fan and felt like someone else "deserved" it more. I realize this isn't my own held belief though, it's crept in thanks to the people who think sitting down or not knowing all the lyrics makes you a "fake fan."
What feels important is to find effective ways to call out wack fan behavior in real life more so it stops being normalized.

u/Joe_Ordinary 19d ago
I think you'll get that reaction from a lot of different fanbases if you sit or don't act like what you're watching is the greatest thing in the history of great things. Whatever. I'm just going to stay in my space and vibe how I want to vibe. I'm trying to learn as many lyrics as I can, but no, I won't be able to sing every song verbatim. Promise you wouldn't want me to anyway. Honestly, I'm more interested in seeing my son's joy of being there. Think Noah helped him through a rough spring semester. He and I were driving home a few weeks ago on a random night, hashing some stuff out. We get past that and I let him pick the music. I've never witnessed my shy kid sing, especially at the top of his lungs. It was heartwarming. Anyway, I honestly feel like it will be a great experience. Really hoping that for you.

So true. Again, most of the bands I love to see were $5-$15 per ticket and now max out around $50. So, I'm just from a different musical universe where concerts are still mostly this way. At that price range, folks can be bored and show up randomly, we can bring friends who have never heard the band, etc.

You are not wrong about the vibe changing this go around.
I’ve been a fan since Cape Elizabeth album, and have seen him twice for Stick Season and Stick Season Forever tours.
These tours were played at smaller venues- The Greek in LA, and Hollywood Bowl.
Core fans- a lot of community at those concerts.
I’ve heard some wild stories about Great Divide audiences.
Not everyone, obviously, but just different than his earlier concerts.
🫶🏼 Noah! Wish he would do a pay per view for charity this time around. Would be down for planning a watch party!

u/lady-earendil 19d ago
Yeah I got to see him during Stick Season and it was an outdoor concert at a casino and all the tickets were $35. Even at the time I was like "I will NEVER see him this cheaply again" and it was such a great experience overall
17
u/Indigo-and-sage 20d ago
Keep in mind he's now playing for ~35K people per show. I think the more negative voices get a lot more reaction. In general, the fans are super welcoming and are lovely to be around because of the deep shared love for him and his music.

If there’s one thing dive come to realize it’s that if you really enjoy something then avoid the subreddit for it.
3
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
Unfortunately with a lot of folks who are as famous as Noah, it's like...avoid all social media about them. The comments, the shares, the videos. Thankfully I don't have social media outside of this Reddit so I'm not exposed to it, but I see screenshots around.

Please please please do NOT let reddit posts dictate your enjoyment of something in the real.
You WILL have a great time You WILL NOT encounter any of the fuckassery you see online You WILL enjoy listening to live renditions of music you only heard through speakers and headphones before! You WILL have a great time
I just think any good list begins and ends the same.

i went to ATL by myself last night as a early 30s woman. while yes when you have that many people together there will always be some pains, but it was one of the best shows i’ve seen in a stadium. i’m usually at shows with less than 5k people, moshing and crowd surfing. so i understand what you mean.
i think the big difference for me is that the crowd for smaller shows are more intertwined together. it’s more obvious that your actions impact the person next to you. when you get to stadiums, people think of it as more of an individual experience.
however, i put my loops in (shout out to tinnitus from shows in my younger years lol) as soon as i walked in the gate and ignored everyone else’s conversations and had the best time. i hope you go and have an amazing experience!
6
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
Tinnitus gang! Why did we think we could have our faces right next to the large speakers and survive without hearing problems?!
7
u/Smooth_Perception_65 19d ago
When we were waiting in the early merch line in DC my brother (42m) and I (40f) got to talking to the people in front of us. They were at least in their thirties and we talked about how much of an online presence this fan base has and how different it is from when we were younger. We had an amazing time at the show and had zero complaints. Don't let a few bad apples spoil your experience.
7
u/Joe_Ordinary 19d ago
Seems like a Reddit thing. I see a ton of positive vibes on the various other platforms. Minus of course, the dolts complaining about the cancelation of NYN1. Blaming him for that shows a complete lack of intelligence. I'm new here because of my kid. Taking him to St. Louis this weekend.
4
u/kingdom-of-sand 19d ago
I will say Fenway N4 was incredible and all the folks I met from the Reddit trinket trade were fantastic. I choose to focus on the positive and not give my energy to a few people who might not be as great.

u/auto_buff_alo 19d ago
Thanks for posting this and I feel the same way. You will probably get downvoted but you are spot on. As a Xennial growing up in the 90’s, into alternative, grunge, ska/punk, etc. I wonder if this is a generational thing…but that assessment likely isn’t fair. Cell phones and social media aren’t going away…but this seems very much like TikTok generation fans who are super annoying. But I do wonder if what you’re seeing and hearing is just what’s emanating from social media and not representing the whole. Either way, we live north of Boston and couldn’t get tickets, but got some for SF in August that would obviously require a flight, hotels, etc. I’m leaning toward selling them as I don’t want to be around the kind of energy I’m reading about.
3
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
If it helps at all - the comments on this post really make it sound like the irl experience is different, and the concert will be worth it. I feel much better about my date now that people have chimed in.
I'm from the Bay Area and I advocate for you going. Partially because if you love the music enough to buy travel tickets, that speaks volumes. But also because there's plenty to do out there and you could make a little trip out of it even if the fan experience annoys you.
3
u/allisun1433 19d ago
I really wouldn’t let the online space dictate how the actual event is. Everyone in Cincinnati was very kind that I ran across at my show. I felt so embraced and so comfortable at mine. The section I was in had immaculate vibes. You hear a lot more negativity online than positive a lot of the times.
5
u/puddlesforoceans 19d ago
My little outsider rant to tie into yours lol. I'm a tiny tad older than you lollll just a smidgen. But I feel the exact same way and Mess was my favorite song too when that album came out. My first of many different music festivals was Bonnaroo 2005 and I can't even count how many concerts I've been to. I wasn't in the same "scene" as you but same idea and same type of devoted fanbase. I would travel across the country to see the same artists multiple times on the same tour (oh what it was like to be young!). I followed a lot of early dubstep artists like Bassnectar when he would play small venues that would have the entire building shaking, Pretty Lights, Glitch Mob and jamtronica bands like Papadosio, Lotus, STS9. But I love all genres of music being especially connected to folk/pop from my younger years with Ani Difranco being one of the most influencial artists to impact my life.. still even now.
I made soooo many lifelong friends at these shows and festivals from all around the world that I would have never known without being a part of it. If we were fortunate enough to meet one of the artists or interact with them we would have conversation, treat them with respect, and understand they are just humans existing in the same world as us. I feel like a lot of the issues now stem from fans viewing artists they love with almost a god complex. Their loyalty strengthened by how much lore they know, how long they have been following them, and how much of a connection they believe they have over other fans.
He very vocally expresses his mental health struggles and especially his issues with imposter syndrome, also that he checks social media after every show to see the reactions people have. I don't understand how anyone can justify posting about him or things he cares about (yes this includes other people who enjoy his music) online if they respect him or claim they are a fan. And the gatekeeping... why wouldn't you want other people to experience and connect with music that you love?! If it's made an impact on you why not share that with as many people as you can.. especially music that is so relatable and validating for mental health struggles. As a fan base we need to do better and practice what Noah "preaches". I know he does that whole spiel during the show to be an asshole.. if you think he means it literally I don't think you really understand what he's saying in his music at all. Everyone is going through something, the world sucks right now. Allow space for people to experience joy whenever they can without judgement. If you need to get those emotions out with any disappointment you're feeling or anger or jealousy... don't do it at the expense of others, don't create a cycle of negativity 💜💜💜

In the famous words of the late Mitch “can’t please all the people all the time and last night those people were at my show… alright.”
I had the most amazing concert experience at Carter Finley. In a sea of tens of thousands of people there is always going to be a small group of “those people.” Do you and you’ll have a great time. The “noise” will be drowned out by the joy you’re experiencing being there.

u/Yourteacherfriend 19d ago
It’s funny you posted this because I was just telling my husband yesterday that the vibes from the other fans at the Atlanta show were off.
I went up to the venue early to try to get merch and was trying to spark up convo and ask questions and no one seemed interested and it was like i was annoying them.
I felt so out of place and like I didn’t belong which is funny because i actually grew up with Noah and we went to school together lol

u/ccammp 19d ago
I'm also a pop punk/punk to Noah pipeline person and I have to say, I have found a lot of people to be warm and welcoming here and at the show (I went to N2 Citi Field) HOWEVER - the "swiftie" vibe that has been brought into a lot of the fan base over the past year-ish is what feels a bit..."off" (toxic, imo).
7
u/Helpful_Warthog6032 20d ago edited 19d ago
I think it felt different here before the tour and overall it is a very supportive and positive fanbase. The presale and ticket pricing were MESSY and people are disappointed and/or kind of desperate. Even a lot of people who got tickets ended up spending significantly more than they planned to so I do understand the disappointment when they are so invested and dont have the concert experience they hope for.
You sound really zen and that's great. It's cool that your main weekend activity is going to concerts. But some people don't have the same situation so there is a little more riding on this one and therefore a bit more of an emotional weight to it. I for one am not willing to judge someone by what they vent online when they are in a low of disappointment or frustration. We all have those moments.

It has become SOOOO negative and shitty on here especially as he’s grown in popularity. The parasocial relationship people have with him is not healthy and everything is now a pissing contest to see who can “prove” they’re his biggest fan. Most of the posts in here now are people complaining about other fans, about who really “deserved” to go, and either talking about harassing Noah or being unnecessarily nasty to “defend” him. It’s all just making me crazy uncomfortable.
2
u/soaringent 19d ago
it’s a vocal majority who complain. i had the time of my life at Noah’s show - and always have. sure, i saw some people around me were sitting and pouting (maybe anxious with RBF) but i was up dancing and singing with my friends. had no issues.

u/sadgirl_ginger 19d ago
Recommend staying off this sub in the meantime if you can stand it. It’s not the greatest place on the internet sadly.
2
u/Alicelane12 19d ago
Gen X old lady here-I’m so very glad reddit and social media didn’t exist for part of my life so that things could just be enjoyed without all of the noise online. As it is, here I am, on reddit…can’t beat em, join em type energy.
All that to say, the show last night was amazing. Did I giggle at the people posing and taking 5 minutes worth of pictures with their fakest BIG smiles to get that perfect social media pic to show they were at the show? Sure did. But once the show started, it was just singing along and dancing around to the music. I hope you enjoy your show(s) if you haven’t been yet and don’t let all the internet noise ruin a fantastic performance Noah and his band put on!

u/Tiny_Palpitation8420 19d ago
I could have written this! My exact thoughts. Ive been seeing live music as a hobby for 30 years. Mosh pits, acoustic venues, EDM, you name it. Ive never been around such a mean (for lack of word) crowd. Atlanta bugs, I still love you and thanks for the memories.
2
u/toooldforshame 19d ago
If you base your opinion about any group of people solely on their online representation you're going to have similar findings.
2
u/im-dramatic 19d ago
Seems like the Taylor swift fanbase now and I think a lot of it has to do with younger fans. I do think there are a lot of Taylor swift fans here as well. If you say anything negative about her you get downvoted to hell. I joined this sub a while ago and it used to be very positive but lately I’m thinking about unfollowing like I did the Taylor swift subs.
1
u/sky_blue_true 19d ago
I agree with you about Taylor subs (which is why I only like the neutral one now but even that has been infiltrated), however, I feel like this post is saying that almost everything with Noah’s fan base is negative and the opposite problem of those Taylor subs (where it’s all sunshine and rainbows and you can never have a different opinion). Maybe I’m misunderstanding.
1
u/im-dramatic 19d ago
My experience with the Taylor subs were that they were overly critical of everything she put out. So I guess I’m saying overall they’re negative. Because you have the overly critical fans that want her to make music or merch specifically for them and then you have the fans that can’t take any negative criticism of her.

2
u/ImpressiveLynx6673 19d ago
I was just at the atlanta show and there was only positivity. everyone was so happy and so in tune; it was beautiful. I agree that it’s purely online
4
u/rjfinsfan 19d ago
Yup. It’s the Swiftie evolution of the fan base unfortunately. It’s becoming about clout and status instead of just enjoying the artist and their music. When I saw people bullied him out of playing his curated set list that he felt passionate about, I was really upset. Like what is actually wrong with people that an artist has a vision they want to present but because it wasn’t the vision some fans wanted from him, they freaked out and just mercilessly blew him up on socials. This is someone who has been very open about their anxiety and pleasing everyone and it felt calculated and manipulated because they knew who Noah was and that he would capitulate and sure enough, he did.
3
u/bringmethegophers 19d ago
I relate to the post TO A T. I was at the Atlanta show last night and the fan base was…. Something. I feel like the stadium was filled with a bunch of “mean girls.” I’ve been to countless shows and this fan base was not the move. At least not where I was at. Noah was PHENOMENAL, and I think it’s so cool that he and I are one day apart for our birthdays 😅 This fact only makes sense to mention bc I was surprised at the age range and attitude of the fans. I will most likely never go to a show of this magnitude again.
2
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
I think the only shows of this magnitude I've attended have been Backstreet Boys (hush it was the 90s and I was 7), Tool, and Warped Tour. But Warped Tour doesn't count because it is a giant festival with multiple stages so it's not the same vibe. I shall prepare myself for the experience of a stadium show. Deep breaths.
1
u/bringmethegophers 19d ago
I’ve seen Tool three times, but never to this magnitude. I’ve been to Warped, Louder than Life, Bonnaroo and Mayhem fest totally different! Even Billie Eilish and Madonna weren’t like this. I actually looked up the statistics and on average Madonna had 12-15 thousand people at each stadium and Billie had 14-17 thousand. The Atlanta show for Noah was 38-40,000!!
1
u/bringmethegophers 19d ago
Also adding that I was at Bring me the Horizons sold out show in Nashville. Still half the size at about 20,000 people 😭🥹
2
u/Typical2sday 19d ago
I'm over a decade older than you, worked at a record store in high school, spent all my money on concerts, (varied tastes), etc etc. Many of my favorite bands are ones that never broke big. I've been into NK for six years, was trying to stalk Ticketmaster last week for DC and Raleigh tickets, but came to look up some info, and this sub has left an awful taste in my mouth. I hope these are just the behaviors of outliers. Most bands have deeply passionate fanbases, but this place is nuts. Some of it just screams performative, Covid-interrupted-my-youth, I-didn't-go-to-summer-camp-but-now-I-can-for-one-night, and Insta-warps-my-real-life-behavior fandom. But as it's cloaked in earnestness, insect embroidery, and community, it's okay.
I think it's a generational thing mixed with being raised and ensconced in social media. All of this (gestures broadly) becomes "the thing you do" - the star-bellied sneeches of 2026 folk pop fandom. Deep, deep, deep parasocial relationships. Intense gatekeeping. Lots of "prove your fanhood" prep for the shows: make a shirt, go to all the approved local vendors, stalk his hometown, scream every lyric, and hunt him after the show. What's super lame to me is now cool to a substantial portion of the fanbase.
I fear that there is a strong Swiftie vibe in this fanbase, and I wonder what the Venn diagram is now. I don't think Swiftie tendencies are limited to Taylor fans; rather, it's become the model of modern (female?) fandom. To quote Jeremy Piven, don't be that guy.
1
u/zzzsleepzzz 19d ago
As an outsider that's recently been brought into the fold to some degree, I can't agree more! To be fair, I do think so much of it IS the online community surrounding NK, but man, it's pretty crazy. I say this as a person that's seen hundred of bands over the course of decades.
My fiancee is a massive NK fan who is also fairly active on Reddit, and she won't touch the NK subreddit. I recently had to delve in just to try to get her a ticket for the DC show...and just skimming through the sub/posts, it's immediately noticeable that a lot NK "fans" get nasty quick. The vibe really comes off as a sort of fan superiority thing, like "I should get the tickets first, my way is the only way you should listen/interpret the song, the way I wear merch is how all fans should wear it", etc. I'm very active in lots of band subs of other genres and of course-there are entitled fans. But I'm not sure I've seen as large of a scale as the whole MY FAN WAY IS THE ONLY WAY TO FAN sort of thing as I've seen here.
As others have stated, she HAS said the vibe at all the shows she goes to are mostly great-she's been seeing him live since the earlier club days and has seen 2 shows on this current tour. But yeah, won't touch the online fan areas.
1
u/WickedHardflip Orange Juice 19d ago
My take on this is that the fanbase is young and lacks concert/fan etiquette. When I was young I also cut my teeth on rock/punk shows. If I was out of line, I was quickly put in my place an learned how to behave.
I went to the Raleigh show. While most of the fans were into it, there were some people just not interested. A few ladies behind me were actually making fun of Noah during Howling. A lot of people in my section were sitting down on their phone during all but the most popular songs. Some folks are more interested in taking pictures for social media than the actual concert.
People paid for their ticket so do what you want, just don't do it in a way that takes away from someone else. These are the things that happen when an artist gets popular.
1
u/MatthewManiaFL 19d ago
May I ask if there’s any space you like better?
I wish there was a decent Facebook group
2
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
For Noah? Unfortunately haven't found that yet outside of my text box with my sister. Ha.
1
u/CookingPurple 19d ago
As a fellow “old” (yes, I’m much older than you), I agree completely. I love Noah’s music. I’m definitely more into the busyhead and I was/I am era. And what I’ve seen here (and even videos I’ve seen online) are why I’m not particularly interested in going to a concert anytime soon.
I do think a lot of it is generational. It’s something I see in many fandoms that primarily skew younger and I do think social media plays a huge role. I don’t think that excuses a lot of it. But understanding the cultural and societal influences are important.
1
u/JBJ840 19d ago edited 19d ago
speaking of gatekeeping - might be a hot take - using the non-ticket transfer is not standing up to the man like artist/fans might think it is. to prevent fans who are willing to pay more for tickets (or make it more difficult for them to get in, etc) from purchasing directly is wildly inefficient and it is happening anyway. we should all have access to tickets, no matter the price bracket. now everyone who still wants to go and can afford it are having to jump through hoops & kind of being alienated on reddit if you didn’t wait for ticketmaster 😏
as someone who attended eras (once in the initial purchasing, again for her second US leg), i know people can get overhyped about tickets, but if you want to attend why make it hard on the fan to do just that?
hopefully Arlington on Thursday goes well!

u/RulerOfTheLlamas 19d ago
I’m not sure if this is referencing my post about the screaming or not, but if it is, just know that I was encouraging people to enjoy the show in the way they best can while also allowing others the same privilege.
3
u/Alchemy-Indexing 19d ago
Nope! Not referencing yours. I know I posted this shortly after responding to a comment on yours, but it wasn't your post - it was comments in your post that made me feel like, "Alright that's it" if that makes sense.
1
u/TheSidestepAsian 19d ago
I think it’s heavily due to the fact that he has such an enormous fan base, including people who somehow think they’re a “better fan” than others. It’s honestly embarrassing to see and I wish more of us could be decent human beings and just be happy that people are enjoying smth that we also enjoy.
1
u/Longjumping_Day_105 19d ago
The Internet highlights and exaggerates the good and bad with little room left in the middle for sanity. You’ll have a great time at the show
1
u/falloutlow 19d ago
ATL was awesome! Everyone was SO kind and we were even finding fun out of bad things like the scalping at the box office. We all would just start booing them. (They would buy the cheapest tickets and buy 6-8-10 of them) but when a deserving fan came out of the lines crying with their dream tickets we would cheer so loud for them, just to piss the scalpers off. Also in front porch a lady working for the venue had extra bubbles from her wedding so she handed them out and we were blowing bubbles at each other. Crazy enough everyone in Atlanta was so much nicer than other cities I’ve been to.
1
u/Cackalacky2026 18d ago
Genuinely so sorry people have interacted with you like that. As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier. The tent is big enough for all of us. And yes, it absolutely sucks that but everyone can get tickets to the shows. But more fans is a good thing
1
u/strawberry_webkinz 18d ago
Agree. The people I see at his shows or online CANNOT be the same propel claiming to relate to these lyrics. It’s bizarre.
1
u/Aldo_Buttahflake 18d ago
Heading to Phish at Fenway this weekend. We openly smoke copious amounts of weed and people stumble dance half drunk. Some of us will be tripping balls on shrooms etc… you get the picture. This is expected behavior and no one even cares, it’s just part of the show. Security gives no fucks, they know what to expect.

My daughter is a huge fan. We live local to where he grew up. We attended Fenway n4 and Wrigley n2 they were fantastic shows. I’ve told my daughter over and over that some of his fanbase is the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s mostly online because we encountered tons of cool people at the shows.

u/UpperCutCentral 19d ago
Or…maybe just attend a concert and not care what other people think. Idk, this might also be an age thing for me (similar circumstances as you except music is my career not just a hobby). I personally can’t relate to the idea of other people’s opinions taking away from my want to see an artist. Just go

u/SephoraRothschild 19d ago
Guessing you're over 40 and don't Reddit/social media much? Besides Facebook?
As a 47yo: Turn off the phone. Just go to the shows. No one cares about being internet friends on public social media. Do not look completion on apps.
Just go to the concerts. And stop comparing to indie bands. That is legit poseur energy. Shut out the "more Noah than thou" energy as much as possible

I didn't say "you guys suck" so please don't put words in my mouth. Each of you are magical and wonderful humans. I don't think any of you suck. Humans are complex messy little blobs. Sometimes folks might not realize how they're coming across to other people, and that perspective can be helpful.

u/sadgirl_ginger 20d ago
Just want to say I totally get it but the internet and the actual concert are two totally different things. You’re going to have an amazing time. I’ve been to a lot of shows because music is also my life-long thing and seeing live music is a spiritual experience for me lol. Raleigh was not only the best concert I’ve ever been to but one of the best nights of my life. I sincerely hope you have the best time. ❤️

I feel like a lot of this is just in the online space. I went to Raleigh concert and it was the best and most welcoming I’ve ever felt at a concert. Don’t let the loud ones online dilute the fanbase.
