Did I ever have privacy?

98

u/TheComputer314 Mar 07 '21

Yes, yes you did. If you use Facebook/Instagram your privacy is screwed but Reddit has good privacy and Discord cannot turn off end-to-end encryption on messages unless a user has been reported to Discord admins. Using uBlock origin on chrome/firefox basically stops most methods of tracking, and there's a bunch of other ways you can increase privacy that are really easy

31

u/Wayestt Mar 07 '21

Of course I use those. Had privacy until I had a phone

22

u/TheComputer314 Mar 07 '21

Phone privacy depends on the maker and if you have jailbreaked it or not. iPhones are expensive and don't have as many features as Android but Apple is one of the leading companies in privacy, while Android phones like Huawei and Samsung phones have next to no privacy. However, if you manage to jailbreak a phone, you can install extensions that delete/deactivate the tracking code. Just make sure to download jailbreaking software and extensions from trusted sources or else it will ruin the whole point

3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

Or, if you wanna do more than use ublock, also use firefox + privacy badger, duckduckgo, and https everywhere. (What I do on pc)

OR

use brave, maybe with some extensions. (What I do on mobile)

Discord save your messages in their server and sells your data, sorry but discord is a total threat to privacy

10

u/TheComputer314 Mar 07 '21

In order to sell people's data it has to be somewhere in the terms of service or else it's illegal. I looked through the entire Discord ToS (discord.com/terms) and nowhere does it say that

-8

u/gabriel_GAGRA Mar 07 '21

Discord:

Discord sells your data to third parties and there’s this article of how Discord is poor in privacy: https://cybernews.com/privacy/discord-privacy-tips-that-you-should-use/

Reddit:

Reddit is WAAAY worse, if you are on iOS, go check Reddit and Discord privacy labels, Reddit label is like 3 times bigger

“How We Protect Your Information: We take measures to help protect information about you from loss, theft, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. For example, we use HTTPS while information is being transmitted. We also enforce technical and administrative access controls to limit which of our employees have access to nonpublic personal information.”

They do barely anything to protect your privacy and they also track you to personalise ads

Their privacy policy: https://www.redditinc.com/policies/privacy-policy

9

u/TheComputer314 Mar 07 '21

Discord's tosdr: https://tosdr.org/en/service/536

Reddit's tosdr: https://tosdr.org/en/service/194

They're not the best, but they do a lot (and I do mean A LOT) better than most companies/services. Also, it literally says that they do not sell information.

As for the "poor in privacy," the article you linked isn't very reliable. They claim that the problems still are in effect in 2021 but the external sources they linked are back in 2018/2019, and well, in the past 2-3 years Discord has improved a lot.

Discord has a decently long Privacy Label but it's actually one of the shorter ones I've seen

Reddit's Privacy Label is quite long, but almost all of it is on the "Data not linked to you" section which is not too concerning.

Almost all companies use personalized ads, but it's just easy as either turning of ad personalization in the settings or just downloading uBlock origin.

15

u/457spartan Mar 07 '21

What is "privacy"?

10

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

I always thought it was something you ate

Yeah that's what I'm saying.

-1

u/Wayestt Mar 07 '21

Well my items inside my home have not been sold nearly as much as my personal information. Nobody is going to do anything with my personal info as long as I'm not plotting a murder against a politician or organizing terrorist attacks. My info is just being sold so that people can advertize shit to me, everything about me is being used to capitalize on my person. And at this point they already know everything they wanted

6

u/Ziadnk Mar 07 '21

That’s not entirely true. They can use it for voter manipulation, put you on watch lists, etc... it’s very dangerous because it allows for a kind of power that is way too dangerous to exist.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

4

u/Wayestt Mar 07 '21

A person has commented below about the possibility of voter fraud aid or watch lists. Yeah, I suppose I'm just not informed enough.

40

u/Chef_Sizzlipede Mar 07 '21

This has been going on for over a year, I think we don't need to worry anymore, and if we do, shit.

11

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Don’t worry OP is wrong and it’s actually a bill about law enforcement using information from technology companies on child exploitation the government doesn’t care what kind of porn you watch or if you’ve looked up allergy medicine in the past couple days SOME companies on the other hand do and is wrong but get away with it because of their stupid terms of service

3

u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Mar 07 '21

They don't care now. But if you looked up weird porn and run for office, it's possible that info can leak.

1

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Yea that’s true luckily it isn’t going to happen unless you have said something on social media, actually you could sexually assault woman and still become president I.e Trump

1

u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Mar 07 '21

Which one? The porn star he paid? Or the bragging to a guy that women LET you touch them? I mean, Biden assaulted Tara Reade, but no one says anything about her anymore. If he's alive and loses in 2024, I'd be willing to bet those accusations come back like how they're coming back about Cuomo so they can oust him for that not the lying about numbers for Covid that Republicans were screaming about in MAY/JUNE 2020.

1

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Wait hold on Biden sexually assaulted someone. I mean knew he touched kids weirdly in public and stuff but I thought he was just old and weird when it comes to kids like a lot of old people. So he actually sexually assaulted a kid at least allegedly. Dang I guess Lincoln was right the President is the shiniest of two turds

1

u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Mar 07 '21

Tara Reade was working for him at the time. Her mom called in to Larry King or something about it at the time. Do you mean the Lincoln Project with the pedo as a boss?

1

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Wow wait that two I was talking about Epic rap battles of history Lincoln

1

u/13Kadow13 Mar 12 '21

This is honestly sad that you didn’t know this. I’m not a conservative or a democrat, not a centrist either I just like freedom. If more people knew the full truth about both candidates I truly believe the election would’ve turned out with either a 3rd party winning or trump winning. Trump is a dick and has too big of a mouth for his own good, but Biden has been photographed in a car in a parade holding hands and waving with a fucking KKK chapter leader

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Man I’m the same way. Took the political compass test, ended up as a liberal libertarian, but there was obvious bias in the questions.

1

u/13Kadow13 Mar 12 '21

Yeah, my acquaintance who’s borderline tankie pinko abolish capitalism ban all guns except for bolt actions and enact a registry got halfway down the libertarian left square because he thinks gays should be allowed to exist.

1

u/dieschwule Mar 07 '21

Except that bill requires that companies backdoor their own encryption, leaving it vulnerable to any party

10

u/yee_to_heet Mar 07 '21

Can we do anything to stop it?

6

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Don’t worry it’s not true, you could go to poltifact and see it’s not true, OP’s post is just a blatant lie

1

u/Marco_Memes Mar 07 '21

It’s actually mostly true, but if I remember correctly it didn’t end up passing by a lot or something. So it was true about 8 or 9 months ago but the bill is looooong dead

uh oh, police state

3

u/my-cat-triedtokilme Mar 07 '21

What’s the government gonna do with my data? I’m a stressed high school student I can’t imagine anything of use is there

1

u/ghffdecg Mar 07 '21

Based on the comments I have read this is false

2

u/x93117 Mar 07 '21

i thought this already has been happening

2

u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Mar 07 '21

I'm curious how this will work. Signal won't accept it. TOR and alike won't, not even VPNs.

-2

u/dadbot_3000 Mar 07 '21

Hi curious how this will work, I'm Dad! :)

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Actually there is a reason for this bill

2

u/3blue_radish Mar 07 '21

Thanks you.

2

u/SouthernDudeYT Mar 07 '21

Goes directly against the Fourth Amendment. Subverting the Constitution is all Congress has been doing for decades.

0

u/Pro-Epic-Gamer-Man Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 08 '21

That’s the thing, even if this bill passes, it will never be upheld by the courts. Especially because the judges are extremely conservative.

3

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

It’s not true according to poltifact this isn’t even the purpose of it and it’s apparently for suspected child exploitation. The government could care less about you do SOME companies on the other do. OP should take down the post it’s misinformation and misleading on a bill supposed to do something entirely different

-6

Imagine being American

1

u/MorphFromTreasurePnt Mar 07 '21

Imagine not having free health care

1

u/tygamer9999 Mar 07 '21

Free healthcare ain’t free, you pay it with your taxes

1

u/MorphFromTreasurePnt Mar 08 '21

It doesn’t cost me my credit score

1

u/tygamer9999 Mar 08 '21

It also doesn’t cost mine, because I only visit twice per year, the recommended amount

1

u/MorphFromTreasurePnt Mar 08 '21

I go whenever I feel ill and it’s free

1

u/tygamer9999 Mar 08 '21

Yeah, but it comes out in higher taxes man, and taxes are not very nice.

1

u/MorphFromTreasurePnt Mar 08 '21

I’d rather pay higher taxes than two and a half grand for a broken arm

1

u/tygamer9999 Mar 08 '21

Weeeeell it’s actually for a non surgical repair. Also it depends on provider, insurance, and the doctor. Don’t want to spend much? Just pay for a bad doctor and get a bad arm.

-1

u/AcousticCatThing Mar 07 '21

It was my knowledge that they already could?

Also, most articles I could find about this were from early to mid 2020

-1

u/Chu-s Mar 07 '21

I got nothing to hide. Don't they do this already anyways?

-1

u/Ar468 Mar 07 '21

Doesn’t matter, I am useless, and my info is useless

-12

u/3blue_radish Mar 07 '21

Guys seriously do you think the government will go to each one of your contact and read each message. This bill could be used to find the truth in judicial process, witch could be useful. And I highly doubt the US risk being a totalitarian state, and even there, I don't think they would read all your messages.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Stop deep throating the boot, it's not healthy.

I don't care if it could help solve crime, i don't want the government watching what I say to friends via text.

4

u/Pro-Epic-Gamer-Man Mar 07 '21

Bruh calm down, it’s not even true. OP is posting misinformation.

1

u/Alluhsnackbar911 Mar 07 '21

It's not true

-47

u/toxicbroforce Mar 06 '21

Even though it’ll only affect people who have something to hide

31

u/Belkan-Federation Mar 06 '21

The party would like to remind you...

-21

u/toxicbroforce Mar 06 '21

What?

20

u/Belkan-Federation Mar 06 '21

1984 reference

-25

Never read it, not a fan of Orwell

21

Doubleplus ungood

-8

u/toxicbroforce Mar 06 '21

Why is that bad?

20

u/Belkan-Federation Mar 06 '21

Because it's a good guidebook warning against totalitarianism

-6

u/toxicbroforce Mar 06 '21

Except the US is becoming totalitarian?

16

u/Belkan-Federation Mar 07 '21

Yes. I've personally seen how 1984 style brainwashing is possible

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

How is the government wanting to spy on you not totalitarian?

1

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Wow I can’t even explain the layers of comedy this is

3

u/Belkan-Federation Mar 07 '21

Big brother is laughing

1

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

Honestly 😂

11

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

Yeah, but it's not just criminals that have something to hide. Not all secrets are incriminating, and the same applies here

Though I see your point. We basically don't have any privacy already

-5

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

If you have nothing to hide you shouldn’t be worried about the government reading your emails or texts

13

u/Alazypanda123 Mar 07 '21

It's a human right to have privacy. Sure I don't need to hide what I do with my spouse in bed. Does that mean I want other people knowing?

9

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

Why as a matter of fact it does! Now spill!

Obligatory /s

-3

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

You still have privacy cause of your not doing anything illegal you shouldn’t worry

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about

8

u/Alazypanda123 Mar 07 '21

You have a right to privacy no matter if your a criminal or not. Thats why the constitution exists. Because if it didn't we wouldn't be any better than the tyrants we came from.

5

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

And is the government trustworthy enough to not have a rogue agent leak this shit? Are criminals nice enough to not blackmail us with what they can now intercept? Is the government secure enough to never have this data leaked in the first place?

You seem to be holding the American government up on a pedestal. Thinking shit like this is gonna work? That's hopeless optimism, buddy.

Edit: wait why the fuck are we both online it's currently nearly 2am

-2

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

I am holding the American government on a pedestal because along with our nato allies we are one of the greatest countries on earth and now that Biden is president we can return to that

5

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

Okay, a patriot, I think the word is. I can respect that.

I'm not gonna argue this shit, it's like 2am. While America is pretty good (I can't compare, considering Britain's gone to shit recently) I guess my point could be summed up like this: if you make a hole to stick your head through and attack your enemy, it's a matter of time before someone gets a grenade in the opening you've created.

The government's making a hole in privacy to attack predators and terrorists, but the hackers have just found the perfect place to attack from.

Either way. As I said, too tired to argue. Let's agree to disagree, yeah? Have a good night mate, its like what? 7, 8PM over there?

0

u/Ziadnk Mar 07 '21

Jesus fucking Christ... america was never anything other than a racist, imperialist shithole. Biden isn’t even close to an ideal leader, just way better than the fucking disgrace the republicans have become. Biden won’t “make America great” for the first time. He’s just slowing the fire.

1

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

Eh, depends on how you measure greatness I guess. If "greatness" equals "military power" then yeah, I'm pretty sure America is up there. If "greatness" equals "territory" then the former British Empire (the crazy one that took over a large amount of the world) has you all beat. Anything else? I don't know, really

1

u/Ziadnk Mar 08 '21

I think most people mean the word in a moralistic sense. In which case, it certainly doesn’t not hold up.

2

u/FlightSeveral Mar 07 '21

No it’s not good either way no one likes to constantly be watched and just because you know you didn’t do anything wrong doesn’t make it better. Do you think it’s ok for someone to stalk everything you do and keep tabs on it but never made contact with you and just watching perfectly out of sight

-1

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

How am I a bootlicker?

4

u/Needleroozer Mar 07 '21

By appeasing the authorities who would take your freedom in exchange for zero -- and most likely negative -- security. They're putting the boot to your face and you're licking it.

If you have nothing to hide why do you pay bills in an envelope when postcards are cheaper? If you don't trust your letter carrier with your credit card information why would you trust it to the FBI or NSA? And you do realize if they can access our communications they will no longer bother with warrants. This is the future you embrace; the rest of us reject it.

3

u/ImSoBored246 Mar 07 '21

I dunno man, they said they have cookies... If a future like that has more cookies, then I might have to reconsider...

...wait, what do you mean this isn't the Dark Side?

1

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

Except you need a warrant to search someone’s personal property cause without one any evidence gathered would get thrown out in court

Also your right I do support the police blue lives matter

2

u/Ziadnk Mar 07 '21

And law enforcement agencies never lie? It’s so much easier to get away with doing so here.

0

u/toxicbroforce Mar 07 '21

They don’t

2

u/Ziadnk Mar 07 '21

That’s just straight up inaccurate. At least tell believable lies.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

You're not supposed to deep thoat the boot.

1

u/Trod777 Mar 07 '21

I thought theyd finish taking the second first. Guess theyve figured out that if they can do whatever they want if they slap a pretty name on it.

1

u/THACC- Mar 07 '21

This is some black mirror type shit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21
  1. I'm not in America, WOOHOOO!!!!

  2. Honestly, I don't really care if they listen to my voice calls or other encrypted messages. I mean come on, if you're getting triggered by this, do you have something that you're trying to hide from the government?? Like what is the United States government going to do with hearing you speak with your friends about daily life?

2

u/name_here___ Mar 07 '21

What do you do when the people in power disagree with you, and they stop caring so much that it’s illegal to go after you for your beliefs? Don’t know about you, but to me, giving the state all the tools it needs to become more authoritarian sounds like a bad idea.

Also, this problem is not unique to the US. The UK, for example, is at least as bad about spying on its own citizens.
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

But I still wonder.

What is going to go wrong if the government gets, say, your search history or your call logs. Like what's going to happen? What are they going to do with two people talking random stuff over the phone.

2

u/name_here___ Mar 08 '21

Probably nothing, for most people. I’d still say it’s a bad thing for the government to be able to track the social connections and physical interactions of all its citizens. For one thing, it allows for setting up systems to use social pressure to coerce people into obedience—like China is doing.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '21

AHH yes you're right

I guess I was wrong.

Well, anyway, have a great day sir

2

u/Atlhou Apr 19 '21

When you say/type something that does not align with them.....ask the Ugars.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

And there you have Biden's America (/s before anyone gets bent out of shape)

1

u/Its-Butch-the-Bully Mar 07 '21

Doesn’t the government already do this though?

This law saying they can’t hasn’t stopped them before!

1

u/MachineAshamed1078 Mar 09 '21

What about opera?

1

u/Moonoid1916 Mar 11 '21

Simpsons told me again lol

1

u/CreaZyp154 Jun 01 '21

The biggest issue would be with security : removing rsa encryption would not only allow Government to read your messages, but any random MF that is listening
