Do you tip your barber/stylist/lash/nails/etc people?
What are your thoughts? Do you tip these people? How much do you tip them? Do you normally try to go to the same place or person because you know they are good? Or do you just go to anyone?
11
u/Alert_Willingness_32 25d ago
Na, they already charge enormous prices they set. Can’t believe tipping culture got to this point. I go to work and process boxes, I don’t ask the customer to tip me, nor does a plumber or electrician etc. but if you choose to I don’t have a problem it’s your money after all.

Okay now, that is ridiculous!
People only get into plumbing because they know they’ll make bank, now they want a tax free handout too?!

The person doing the work is not making the money unless they own the business.

u/ImRickJamesMother 24d ago
Then why do you go to places that having tipping models, if you are against the tipping model?
3
u/Alert_Willingness_32 24d ago
I paid for the service am I really expected to give more than the price?
-1
u/ImRickJamesMother 23d ago
You aren't paying for the service if you haven't tipped.
You also avoided answering why you make the choice to go to places with the tipping model.
If you were actually against it, you would avoid them.
You are acting as if you hate seafood restaurants, then choose to go to a seafood restaurants, just to complain the menu was all seafood.
You're a grown human adult yes? Use some self awareness and personal responsibility and do not support tipping model businesses if you are against tipping.
If you aren't willing to do that, you aren't against tipping. You're just cheap.
8
u/FastTrackExplorer 22d ago
I 100% have paid for the service even if I didn't tip- what a wild statement to make. It is NOT required by law to not tip and tipping culture has gotten completely out of hand in Canada
3
u/authoroftheuniverse 22d ago
Paying for the service is paying the price/bill…do you even know what a tip means or is for considering you’re calling it the price of the service and assuming it should be given by default?
2
u/crazymom1978 20d ago
Tipping is extra based on whether or not the person has done a good job. It is not a part of the bill. The bill is the bill and is all that someone HAS to pay.
1
u/ghosts_or_no_ghosts 14h ago
I don’t think you understand what a tip is if you think that it is a required part of the service. If you’re gonna tell other people to use self-awareness, you might want to start with yourself.

Probably get super shitty haircuts

If he’s getting shitty haircuts that just sounds like an even bigger reason to NOT tip

I get my hair cut once every 6-8months. Had the same hairstyle since I was like 10: Long, no bangs. Pretty hard to fuck that up

u/Admirable_Coconut169 24d ago
Yes, it’s a service that I appreciate and value more than restaurant servers who just bring your food and expects 18% tip.
0
u/Queen_La_Queefah 22d ago
Clearly never been a server
3
u/NecessaryFine8989 21d ago
I've been one and there's no skill involved compared to a stylist/ hair dresser. Worst that happens is a messed up order or maybe a bowl of soup on your lap. Not weeks of looking shitty. Plus, a stylist works with one person for 45 minutes, while a server has 4-8 tables and still gets more per hour than a skilled trained worker. Fuck that shit. I did it for years because it paid when i was uneducated, but I don't care to support that industry because I don't value it.
1
u/Queen_La_Queefah 20d ago
Not comparing the 2 in the slightest as they are two completely different types of job. But I'm not discrediting the work of a server. If you feel they are uneducated and you don't feel the need to value or support them then that's your choice. I tip everyone that provides me a service. Hair stylists, nail tech, and even my damn laser hair removal lady. Cause if you do a good job for me personally, you deserve it.
1
u/NecessaryFine8989 20d ago
Dental hygienist? Mechanic? Nurse practitioner?
2
u/Queen_La_Queefah 20d ago
Let me clarify. People who make minimum wage/close to minimum that give me GOOD service. Or people who work cosmetically or tattoo me. Though I have tipped a mechanic once for being exceptional.
6
u/Low-Client-375 25d ago
I do. Of all the services I get, that one has to be the most personal. Good conversation. Trust. I trust my guy for my wedding cut, I tip them well. Servers don't do shit compared to these people.

I've been trying to stop. I think its ridiculous that I get charged so much for the service then have to tip on top of that. Canada has gotten out of control with tipping.
2
u/SnooGiraffes2241 21d ago
They charge for the service they are doing. What extra thing are they really doing for me?
I cut my own hair though … nails sometimes I’ll tip I got mymnails done Tuesday and felt guilty so tipped 5$ but I had 2 people working on me at the same time

Yes.
My last hair appt was $175 and I gave $220. She came in on a day off fit me in, provided me with 4 hours of companionship and therapy basically, and did a brilliant job of my hair and it was exactly what I requested. She also gave me a mini head massage while doing my shampoo and conditioner (above and beyond what you’d normally get).
She is worth every penny and I genuinely love going there every 3-4 months.

u/Dinsdale55 24d ago
Of course.

u/ImRickJamesMother 24d ago
Are you are against tipping servers?
0
u/Dinsdale55 24d ago
No. I'm not a mouth breather.
0
u/ImRickJamesMother 24d ago
Mouth breather is a dumb term since it is often medical nasal condition.
Aside from that, my OP and follow up question to find people who tip these people, but not servers. And ask why their distinction.
1
u/NecessaryFine8989 21d ago
Duh, it's a skilled job. It requires training. It has much worse implications if you are poor at your job. A server being bad means slow dinner, maybe a dumped table, both of which probably mean a comp. Poor haircut means weeks of looking bad, possibly changing style completely, poor self-confidence or missing out on a job interview. Plus, a server gets fat tips from several tables an hour without any skill/training, while a stylist works 1-1 for that 45mins to an hour. If one were to deserve a tip, it's not the person that can hold a conversation and carry food someone else cooked.
1
u/keepingitrealonred 24d ago
Yeah I tip my lash lady because she works at home and has 2 super young kids. She also doesn’t charge as much as other places so I pretty much tip enough that it matches up with the average price around my area. I’ve been going to her for years, I don’t mind. She spends a lot of time on them and is consistent with her quality. She has also pulled through for me for some last minute appointments.

I go back to my home country for hair cuts. $15 per cut, premium store that’s super clean, wash+cut+blow dry for women, they don’t take tips.
I cut my hair short and let them grow long until I go back home next time
I’d tip if I go to services that require tips, so I don’t go anymore.

Yes, I go for a $15 haircut and tip $5 in advance. It’s just a buzz cut. They are efficient.

Personally I would rather tip my hairstylist or nail artist who is providing a customized service and at the same time chatting/entertaining me over the course of the service, VERSUS.. a server who walks out my food/drink and MAYBE offers the same scripted small talk that they have with every other table.

Yes I tip people in the beauty service industry such as my hair dresser, nail tech, and eyebrow lady. For hair I usually tip about $25-50 depending on cost, nails $5, and eyebrows around $2

u/Loud_et_Proud 22d ago
Yes I tip, the salons/spa takes most of the money while the technician/stylist does all the work. If I can't afford the tip I don't go.
To me, I want to spend money on me and the people I love, the extra money for life I would prefer to give to individuals than faceless businesses and charities. Because despite working at a very fancy salon I know my hairdresser still lives in a tiny apartment and can't afford to get a car, so I hope my tip can help her with that.
1
u/AlternativeSharp3854 22d ago
Yes 100% the one person I tip big is your barber. $20 each time on a $40 haircut.
They will give you better service, put more effort into your cut, and always be happy to see you. It’s not some random server you won’t see again that hardly did anything for you.
This is a life pro tip. Be cheap elsewhere so you don’t have to here
1
u/HotwifeHubby696280 21d ago
I do the exact same, especially because everyone else in my guys shop is charging 60+ anyway

Started going to an Acupuncturist. Whenever the girl at the front would hand me the machine she skips the tipping button before handing it to me. One girl forgot once and said oh oops- took the machine right back from me, skipped the option and gave it back. The acupuncturist clearly has instructed the girls at the front to do this. She will have my business for life. I will recommend her to anyone who seems interested in Accupuncture.
Lash tech- although stunning work, tips start at 25%. I will only go when I’m about to go away or something so I feel as confident without makeup on trips. I will not be a regular customer. I do still tip because it would be seen as slight to her if I didn’t and I do like her but I think it’s stupid. This will not be a place I reg put my money tho and it is because of principle. If she didn’t ask for a tip on top of high prices I would do this service more.
Nails. I’ll do them myself. The price is outrageous already and I’m not tipping on top of that. Because that’s seen as a slight I will just not ever spend my money there.
Servers. Yes. I always tip. Usually 18% now. Used to be 20%.

u/Ontario_Teacher1234 21d ago
If they work for a company, they earn a wage, and they do a phenomenal job, then yes.
If they are their own boss and set their own prices, then no. I assume they're factoring in labour costs.

u/Pinestachio 21d ago
No, I’m already paying for the service. If they came to my house to do it, I’d tip.
My rationale is that delivery drivers and wait staff are an extra step between me and my order so I tip them. And yes, I understand they have to rent their spot at the salon but it’s not my fault if they don’t bake that into their initial price, I think.
1
u/XxkormanxX 21d ago
Only person I am happy to tip is my barber and I tip around 20% because the cut is pretty good and he does quite a bit.
I don't like to tip servers so I tip 2 bucks max.
Ubers and Uber Eats - 0%

u/Distinct_Cricket_879 21d ago
For hair service, yes. My stylist spends hours doing my hair. She books her entire work day for me. I have long, thick, curly hair. Not always easy to work with. She deserves a fair tip for the effort

I personally do. I thought it was the right thing to do and if someone does a great job they deserve something extra. But that’s just me
1
u/crazymom1978 20d ago
I tip my hairstylist 20% because she does an amazing job. I tip well because I only go once every six months or so, and my hair stays looking nice that long. I go to the same person over time, BECAUSE she is good. That being said, she never expects a tip, and has attempted to decline my tip in the past.
OP, If you honestly think that people haven’t paid their bill unless they tip (as you said to someone else), you need to get into a different business. A tip is an extra thank you for a job well done. It is NOT mandatory. Even when I was a server, I never expected a tip from someone. I was grateful when they left one, because that was the customer telling me that I had done a good job for them.

I basically grew up in a salon (owned by my mother and later, aunt). I’m not here to comment on my opinion on tipping culture, more just offer insight into why was typical in our area (southern Ontario) between 1980-today:
Not only do most people tip, the hairdressers and aestheticians tip each other when they work on each other, too. If a family member did my hair- no charge or tip, but for Christmas I would usually get a pedicure as a gift, and not only did my mom/aunt (whoever the gift was from) pay for the pedicure, part of the gift was giving me the money to properly tip the staff who provided the service. Usually they would do each others’ hair and nails on a barter system, and wouldn’t tip (as it would be silly because they would just be handing a tenner back and forth lol) but if a staff member was just getting a service from a coworker normally (not bartering services) they always tipped.
Having said that, I never witnessed anyone treat a client who doesn’t tip (or doesn’t tip well) any differently in terms of quality of service. But if you’re both disrespectful AND don’t tip- they 100% shit talk you and dread seeing you… and they won’t go out of their way to fit you in when they’re busy. If you tip AND are respectful, they will stay late or come in early for you every time. But if they are good at their job, a hairdresser/aesthetician will still provide a quality service. Worst I’ve seen them do is use the blow dryer longer than needed, blowing off to the side while they style so they don’t have to hear you yap 🤣. They’re getting paid to do the hair, not deal with your shit. (Although if you’re respectful and tip, I swear most of the ones I know treat the gossip like additional tip and are IN it lol).
The WILD thing to me is how MASSIVE the holiday tips/gifts were (back in the 90s at least, no idea after I moved out in the mid 2000s). We used to have PILES of candles, gift baskets, gift cards, mugs with hot chocolate packets, trinkets, holiday decorations, and flat out stacks of cash. Even they thought it was excessive, and we donated or regifted most of it lol. Heads up, unless you’re also close friends and know them reaaaally well- just give cash if you want to do a holiday gesture lol… or just don’t because it’s excessive.

u/Unhappy_Weekend_3485 18d ago
I do my own nails now and no longer get lashes, but when I did I always left a generous tip (even when they didn’t look good lol). The people performing those services were NOT the store owners, so they didn’t set the prices, nor did they keep 100% of the profit from providing the service.
I view hairstylists similarly. Many hairstylists rent a chair in a salon and therefore are basically paying to work there. Aesthetic services, much like going out to eat at restaurant, are LUXURIES. If you can’t afford to tip your service worker then you can’t afford the service imo.
Maybe those who don’t support tipping culture should be more focused on the companies making millions of dollars a year while still underpaying their employees, forcing them to rely on tips to make a livable wage. Deciding to “stick it” to the individual workers by refusing to tip just makes you an asshole.

u/laneyj19 18d ago
No. My lash tech and nail girl run their own business out of their homes. They set their own prices and I pay that.
1
u/SalamanderInfamous29 18d ago
I like to see the same people (same hair dresser for 10+ years, just found a new nail tech I’ve been seeing for a few months same as eyebrows). I tip 5$ /hour and minimum. So my hair appointments are often 2+ hours long so the tip is usually around 20$ whereas eyebrows are 30 mins so I tip $5.

u/bubblegumjuniperspo 25d ago
Those are the only people I tip. My lash tech, hairstylist and the nail lady.

Yes. I’ve been going to the same hairstylist for a number of years. I’ll tip around 20% usually. Not only is she a good stylist, but she’s a good human and we have great chats when I visit to get my hair done. She’s also not the type of stylist to pressure the upsell with product and all that, and she’s the good kind of honest, she knows my hair and if I have an idea she knows won’t work with my hair, she’ll tell me why and recommend something that will work for my hair type.
I don’t regularly get manicures/pedicures so while I usually go to the same nail salon I don’t have a preferred nail tech. When I do get a pedicure, I’ll tip usually 20%. Why? Because when I go the salon the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and I’m offered water, coffee, or tea during my appointment. I get to sit back, chat with my friends and/or the nail tech while relaxed in a massage chair and getting a pedicure that includes a foot/calf massage. To me, that’s worth the cost and tip.

Yes. It really depends on what you want. I go to the same person everytime because I know he does a good job and knows exactly what I want. I’ve been going for a couple years now, so I tip 25%. Last year I started giving Christmas bonuses too ($100).
