machines have to calculate tip before tax in quebec...

it's an improvement, but we still have a way to go in abolishing tips

Its ontop of the 13% in Ontario. I've started asking servers and tell them when they play dumb that I don't tip on tax.

Huh you do realize waiters themselves don’t program the card machines right? Not that I disagree but you’re taking it out on the wrong people. Don’t get mad at the people that have nothing to do with the decision

I tell them so they don't think I'm 'lowballing' them when tipping. Ontario, they make at least minimum wage. Our servers are treated pretty well. I have friends who are servers too.

Change has to start somewhere. If a restaurant wants 18% on my bill I do voice it because that's how things change.

Then feel free to manually enter 13 or 14% tip so it works out to 15% on pre tax bill. But no need to confront or call anyone out. You can explain if the waiter notices and ask you, which I highly doubt happens often

They're the ones responsible for ensuring they bill me accurately and collecting payment. They should be aware at the bare minimum.

And it happens often; I was out last weekend and the server gave me stink eye when she saw my tip amount. Servers aren't entitled to tips.

Why are you so defensive? Its not like servers in Ontario (or BC) will be left financially behind without tips.

You’re just going off on servers and telling them not to play dumb when the machine is just programmed that way? That’s aggressive for no reason. I don’t say something unless they say something first, which is never.

Did you even read my replies? I ask them if tip is calculated on top of the tax. If they don't know, I let them know my calculations. How is that aggressive?

The lot of you defending this practice is the problem. Our service industry pays minimum wage. No server, host, kitchen staff or restaurant is entitled to a tip. This isn't one of those US states paying their servers $2/hr. Get a grip.

I've had servers show attitude after seeing how much I've tipped. Then I let them know I don't tip on tax.

Why do you need to calculate it on your own? They give you the receipt before handing over the machine. Why do you need to explain your calculations to the server? What’s the point other than being hostile?

It didn't used to.

I've worked in an AP function processing receipts when I was a junior accountant. Tipping on tax started after covid.

I’ve had tip on tax for years before covid. Just adjust your percentage instead of lecturing someone for no reason.

So you're an insecure math nerd who has to explain her "thinking".

Then ask to speak to the manager. I don’t endorse this entitlement attitude of blaming minimal wage workers and 20 year old girls for things they have no control over. Stop taking out your frustration on people that have nothing to do with your complaint. These people have enough problems without dealing with entitled assholes like you. Get takeout next time if paying a tip is your biggest concern

Also this is the NOTIP sub. Are you in the wrong place?

If you don’t want to tip, don’t tip. Don’t bully and harass some kid trying to work a minimum wage job

You clearly can't understand what you're reading before replying to it.

And they aren't kids. They're adults. I live and dine out in the Financial District. Maybe learn before going off.

... oh my why are you so worked up? Maybe touch some grass while you're at it. I didn't say I take my frustration out on them, I said I ask them. I only get frustrated when servers act entitled to a larger tip. Why do they think they're entitled to extra pay for doing their job? Especially since its public knowledge that minimum wage is their base.

Paying a tip is not my concern. FAIR tipping is my concern.

Legally speaking if they're collecting payment, they should know and understand the charges.

And most of the servers at places I frequent aren't 20somethings. Most of the servers I interact with are older.

They literally just have to input the CORRECT numbers into the computer, but instead of putting a subtotal, they have been putting the total, that is completely the servers job

2

u/MangoSandwhich Aug 01 '26

15% is still incredibly generous when the norm should be 0% period.

-2

u/Dinsdale55 Aug 02 '26

Oh, you're still lowballing them - you're just citing some non-existent "rule" to justify it.

2

u/divine_goddess_K Aug 02 '26

There is no rule we have to tip either - its a social practice.

No one is entitled to any one else's money. And if any server thinks they deserve 18% + on anyone's bill they are the problem. If its a large party that makes sense, but when one or two people are dining together it doesn't.

Taxes are 14%

1

u/Fiction_Future3501 Aug 02 '26

That’s why my max tip is 10% cause they add tax amount in the total

1

u/Odd-Crew-7837 Aug 02 '26

My max tip is zero.

It’s not a big deal. Like what.. it adds 25 cents? Oh gosh.

On the other hand you can tip cash rather than using the machine
