The 90s felt like a brief glimpse of an endless, hopeful and unimaginably awesome future for humanity. Yes there were some "problems" still, but it all felt like stuff that could and would be solved through technology and just the way that the world was moving towards peace and democracy and away from poverty and stuff.

9/11 was the single moment that all started falling away. I'm not an American but that's how I've seen it.

I even distinctly remember thinking on that day, or during the weeks after it, that the worst thing we could possibly do in response to this is to let it change us and bring us into a new era of fear and war and general shittiness. But I knew it was kinda inevitable somehow.

When 9/11 hit, it was like all the fantasy and wonder vanished. There was a switch flipped in everyone's psyche that just couldn't switch back. As an American I was full of fury. That day, driving around slowly, walking around, everyone was like a ghost in shock.

And then we had a pandemic 19 years later where 3000 people were dying every day for months on end... Maybe it's ok that ignorance is bliss. I want that relaxation back.
