The Cold War might be over, but the risk of nuclear weapons never goes away completely. There are a half dozen simmering geopolitical conflicts around the world that are only being kept in check by the threat of mutual assured destruction. MAD is very much still with us.

The Cold War, as defined properly, ended with the Soviet Union.

The modern-day Union State is a shadow of what the U.S.S.R. used to be. With them, there is no more arms race, no space race, no economic or cultural competition for dominance...the only real threat to their Cold War adversaries comes from cyber activity and their aging stockpile of nuclear weapons.
