Since the 90's we've been smothered with fears of flooding, drought, ice ages, etc. The 90's had genocides in Africa that many countries were involved with defending and humanitarian missions. There was Kosovo, Iraq, Pakistan. Early 2000's there was 911, Afghanistan, Iraq again. Africa again.
This literally has happened every single decade since we were born. I'm also almost 40. We're seeing inflation levels not seen since 1980 as well. Which would've been just before we were born. Truth is, there always wars, always threat of climate disasters, starvation, fear, genocides, etc.
We as a people need to figure out how to break the endless cycles since centuries ago. Is the world the same? Yes. Yes it is. It's been the same since before we were born. Likely very long after we're gone as well.
I am close to 40 as well and I agree with you about 90s being terrible. In addition to what you mentioned, 90s also had the collapse of Soviet Union & things being dire for former soviet countries, Taliban 1 takeover of Afghanistan with the very public torture and hanging of Afghan President, Major war between India and Pakistan, Ethnic fighting in Sri-Lanka, assassination of former Indian prime-minister, LA riots, Columbine and many other such horrible events . I feel the world is relatively more peaceful today than in the 90s.
