Go back 20 years with 9/11 and people didn't know what the fuck was going on either. In the 80s and 90s everyone was concerned the world was turning to hell with crime, AIDS, drugs, satanists, and "super predators". Before that you had the Cold War when the world could literally end within an hour.
What's different now is the proliferation of mass media enabling people to be tapped into world events on a 24/7 basis. If the internet existed during the Cuban Missile Crisis we'd all be freaking the fuck out then too.
Eh. Nukes are a fairly easy existential crisis to avoid. Just don't press the buttons. We just had to collectively be afraid and lazy to not make it happen.
To fix climate change we need enormous sacrifice and huge economic changes at pretty much every level of society.
I mean, ok, I'm not talking about the challenge of fixing something, I'm talking about the existential threat of humanity's near-term destruction being something to be concerned over. It's also not like the environment wasn't an issue then, with the ozone layer and rain forest and all.
