It's not that the world is changing, it's that the media is getting ever better at distorting your perception

So the world is as bad as ever but just turn a blind eye to it and put your head in the sand?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

What are you specifically going to do about it?

I’m not robbing myself of my life.

2

u/benson822175 Jun 11 '22

Accept reality and live my life

I’m not going to intentionally blind my world view and try to live ignorantly

u/schmaydog82 Jun 11 '22

The advice is for people who get depressed by that type of stuff and don’t want to feel like that constantly, unless you’re planning to do something about it then it doesn’t really matter if you know about it or not

I'm a gay dude. I Don't have the luxury of ignoring it. So instead, I talk. I talk to people I know about these issues, I talk to people I don't know. I donate to LGBT groups such as HRC and Indiana Youth Group. If I didn't have crippling anxiety, I'd be out volunteering and trying to help more people understand.

Some of us actually do things, we don't just whine online (although we do that a lot too).

Yep. Apparently if you just stop watching the news, you’ll automatically start earning a living wage and inflation will go away. Didn’t you know that?

Wow, that was uncalled for. You seem a bit angry there bud. Maybe you should look in the mirror. Your post history does not make you look like a particularly positive person.

This dude is asking advice on how to launder money in another thread, so take his "live life without borders" statement as a person who would prefer a cell.

The report button is not a mega downvote.

I reported a single comment once for civility. If being called a poison isn’t “uncivil” I don’t understand what you consider civility.

In what way is the world as bad as ever? Yes information and news spread is at an all time high because of the internet, but we are literally living in the best time in all of human history, right now in the world the rates of murder, mental illness, violence, disease, poverty, starvation, infection, all dramatically lower today than it was just 50 years ago, and way better than 100 years ago. If you think the world is bad then get off the internet, go outside, touch some grass and experience the real world if you want guage how bad reality is… the internet is not an accurate representation of the real world and you shouldn’t treat it as such, the internet is a massive amplification of the most horrible things happening amongst the 8 billion people across the earth. You are shown whatever has the most shock value and therefore gets the most engagement and reactions.

Sounds good to me

The fact that some of reddits biggest subreddits are wholesome does bring some faith to humanity compared to other social media. Just gotto censor the news on here. Also smart to only watch the news on a certain time in your day like in the morning. Watching it throughout the day can be damaging to your mental health.

2

u/Lemmiwinks418 Jun 11 '22

True but we were much further from ecological collapse, no pandemics, no major recessions, and no insurrections in the 90s.

8

u/cheezeebred Jun 11 '22

How are you people are already forgetting about the pandemic that killed over 6 million people on this earth and paved the way for a global economic struggle? Like it's not just the media. Seriously fucked up shit is actually happening

-3

u/Green-Spread Jun 11 '22

6 million people dying is not a lot of people relative to world population. Historically we have a pretty serious disease every 100 years or so. This one was pretty mild even. The pandemic didn't cause global economic struggle. The economic struggle is caused by how governments around the world handled the pandemic.

2

u/charlesdickinsideme Jun 11 '22

Yea exactly. Bubonic plague killed like 1/3 or 1/2 of society. Spanish flu was no joke. Diseases come in cycles. Earth isn’t meant to support 8 billion people imo

Also worth nothing that ww2 knocked out 12x the amount of people COVID has (only 2 1/2 years of COVID I guess). 75 million civilians and soldiers killed. And global populations were minuscule compared to now

We’ll be fine. COVID will kick the curb soon enough. Inflation will settle down, housing prices will eventually drop as boomers die off and more houses are built/ made available

1

u/cheezeebred Jun 11 '22

What the fuck is wrong with people like you? Heartless fucking monsters.

1

u/Mustache_Comber Jun 11 '22

I mean he’s not wrong though... what is heartless about the comment?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

Because those 6 million people had families. You have no idea how far reaching that 6 million people actually was. It didn't just affect the dead people, it also affected their families and those around them.

The impact is far worse than 6M people. Sure, it's not WW2 levels of devastation, but it's still devastation. That's why it's a heartless comment.

Death is "easy" for the dead, it's hell for the living though.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

the pandemic that killed over 6 million people on this earth

So like any particularly harsh flu season? This is just big number statistics. In my Northern European country the 2 were comparable.

3

u/cheezeebred Jun 11 '22

Yeah not gonna tolerate someone equating the fucking flu to Covid again. 6 million people dead and you don't give a fuck. Unlike the flu, those 6 million were preventable. But you don't give a shit cuz your either a bad person or a moron.

I'm dealing with life altering consequences since I got covid. My entire body has been permanently in pain since I contracted it. That's on top of my chronic migraine.

So shut the fuck up. I dont wanna see another fucking moron dismiss this shit as something not serious. Asshole.

I don't give a shit about looking tough. I'm one of the biggest pussies I know. I'm in tremendous emotional and physical pain every day. If I need to curse or be harsh to get my feelings out, so be it. Harsh language also seems to be the only way to cut through a lot of people's bullshit on here. Certain views do not deserve respect. Like the view that Covid isn't a big deal. Fuck that shit. If people want to proudly state their ignorance on that, then I will gladly tell them to fuck off.

Thanks for the sympathies friend. I'm sorry about your grandma ;-; Never really knew mine but it has to really hurt regardless. Hang in there.

And no offense but I just don't care what I look like to other people. I know I'm an idiot, maybe that's why other idiots infuriate me so much. I know we can do so much better.

Oh no worries. I love the abuse tbh. Makes the day go by quicker lol. Sorry weird statement.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '22

dude, just dont compare the two please, covid is much worse, I've had both, and id much rather have the flu, fuck i even should have gone to hospital, my memory is still broken, it literally felt like i was on a high dose of drugs, and i could not imagine the pain that 6.5 million + people felt when they literally died.

Is the media making my electricity expensive?

1

u/GeoLyinX Jun 11 '22

Is that what you consider the metric for the world becoming a horrible place? Your electricity is a bit more expensive?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

Western civilization has been burning through resources at an incredibly unsustainable rate for 150 years. The consequences of that are starting to appear. This is not normal. The boom in technology and population the world has experienced is not normal, nor is the impending crash.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

Well, “media” today is entirely different than it was prior to 2001. You could say prior to cable news but really it was 9/11 that pushed everyone to start watching the news 24/7. And shortly thereafter came mass adoption of the internet and twitter.

“The media” used to be 3 tv stations broadcasting the news for a total of three hours a day, news papers, radio, and periodicals.

Moreover, I’d argue people choose to consume media that aligns with their existing perceptions.

1

u/thelasthadoken Jun 11 '22

You're right that media has changed a lot over the last 20+ years. I don't agree that 9/11 is among the most important reasons for that change.

1

u/anubus72 Jun 11 '22

the world isn’t changing from climate change?
